Book excerpt: Don Pinnock, a well-known travel writer, has drawn on his passion for Africa and his experience as a journalist for Getaway magazine to write yet another entertaining and engrossing book of short essays on natural history, full of humor, interest and speculation. Each of his essays reveals something of natures many quirks and offers startlingly large questions from little things that ordinary folk pass over with hardly a glance. The pieces are short and easily digestible, with a bit of philosophy and an interest in the human story. And include ruminations on the following questions: · Are clouds alive? · Where is Africa's most dangerous river? · Why do female hyenas sometimes grow a penis? · Why did Zulu warriors never ride into battle mounted on zebras?

Summer has begun, the beach beckons—and Francesca Schnell is going nowhere. Four years ago, Francesca’s little brother, Simon, drowned, and Francesca’s the one who should have been watching. Now Francesca is about to turn sixteen, but guilt keeps her stuck in the past. Meanwhile, her best friend, Lisette, is moving on—most recently with the boy Francesca wants but can’t have. At loose ends, Francesca trails her father, who may be having an affair, to the local country club. There she meets four-year-old Frankie Sky, a little boy who bears an almost eerie resemblance to Simon, and Francesca begins to wonder if it’s possible Frankie could be his reincarnation. Knowing Frankie leads Francesca to places she thought she’d never dare to go—and it begins to seem possible to forgive herself, grow up, and even fall in love, whether or not she solves the riddle of Frankie Sky.

Book excerpt: Voices of Love Letters from Africa is a collection of writings from young writers from Africa. The 2021 winners and finalists of the 2021 Chima Ugokwe Prize for Essay contributed to this volume. They are voices of Hope. Voices of patriotism. Voices of common sense. They are innocent voices from Africa. Beautiful souls who wrote from their hearts. They have given us hope, a future, and love. I was touched as I read thoughtful lines that proffers solutions to many contemporary challenges that the pandemic came with. The Ubuntu. I am because weare. They were part of a history that will never die. They witnessed a time when humanity listened to the same whistle and we all got home. For the first time, we were worried about ourselves, our neighbors, our children, and distant persons. For the first time, generosity thrived more than it does in festivities. For the first time, we live consciously, watching and paying attention to headlines and breaking news. For the first time we cried for people we do not know and had never seen. We became human and to some, more religious. Well, for the same time still, we had to socially distance ourselves from our friends and loved ones. In their believe, they are sure that common sense can no longer prevail, but a sense of common purpose, a sense of deep thinking that targets our living beyond fears, beyond doubts and worries, beyond insensibility and irresponsibility, a sense that can generate widespread new understanding of reality and collective action. We must live for others. That is the spirit.

Book excerpt: "This is an exercise in love, an attempt at developing taste, a test of how sweet a word can be, an ode to moments. This is a manifestation of slowness and quiet and sunshine, early mornings and late evenings, glad memories and slender times. This is yearning and giving, an extended meditation on letters, what they can and cannot do for one's being." Meia Geddes' LOVE LETTERS TO THE WORLD - a series of 120 lyrical missives - addresses the world as body, concept, and stranger. This edition -- new and handwritten -- is a quiet celebration and exploration of life, love, language, and one's place in the world.

Book excerpt: "The Love Letters from Mother Earth" series is written by Anneloes Smitsman to guide us into the heart of our humanity to discover the essence of who we are from a planetary perspective. Within 12 hours of its launch "The Promise of a New Beginning" made it to the top 10 of Amazon International Bestsellers in two categories, and has been endorsed by Dr Jean Houston, Dr Lawrence Bloom, Chief Phil Lane, and Dr Jude Currivan as a book that will change your life and guide you Home. Through these Letters, we receive the wisdom and support that our planet, as a caring and conscious Mother, shares for this challenging time."The Promise of a New Beginning" lives within us as an ancient seed code from the Eternal. We have been aware of this possibility for a long time, yet as a species we were not yet sufficiently engaged with the process for birthing this together. Collective engagement in the birthing of this new possibility is increasing now. It is within this context that these Letters from Mother Earth and Father Sun have come into being. They remind us that we are made for this process, and we are not alone. The first thirteen Letters provide us with three essential keys for the actualization of our unity. By accessing these keys of wisdom we start to see and understand the root causes of the thousands of years of division and disunity that have caused so much suffering. Mother Earth promises and shows us how a new cycle of time, a new beginning, is possible born from unity and wholeness, by the power of Love. This prepares us as co-creators of a New Story based on the actualization of our true humanity.

Book excerpt: "[A] long, beautiful, heart-breaking love letter to potential and possibilities and hope, to the pain we survive in youth and carry with us into adulthood."--NPR Book Reviews One week. That's all Jessie said. A one-week break to get some perspective before graduation, before she and her boyfriend, Chris, would have to make all the big, scary decisions about their future -- decisions they had been fighting about for weeks. Then, Chris vanishes. The police think he's run away, but Jessie doesn't believe it. Chris is popular and good-looking, about to head off to college on a full-ride baseball scholarship. And he disappeared while going for a run along the river -- the same place where some boys from the rival high school beat him up just three weeks ago. Chris is one of the only black kids in a depressed paper mill town, and Jessie is terrified of what might have happened. As the police are spurred to reluctant action, Jessie and others speak up about the harassment Chris experienced and the danger he could be in. But there are people in Jessie's town who are infuriated by the suggestion that a boy like Chris would be a target of violence. They smear Chris's character and Jessie begins receiving frightening threats. Every Friday since they started dating, Chris has written Jessie a love letter. Now Jessie is writing Chris a letter of her own to tell him everything that's happening while he's gone. As Jessie searches for answers, she must face her fears, her guilt, and a past more complicated than she would like to admit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love Letters from Golok chronicles the courtship between two Buddhist tantric masters, Tāre Lhamo (1938–2002) and Namtrul Rinpoche (1944–2011), and their passion for reinvigorating Buddhism in eastern Tibet during the post-Mao era. In fifty-six letters exchanged from 1978 to 1980, Tāre Lhamo and Namtrul Rinpoche envisioned a shared destiny to "heal the damage" done to Buddhism during the years leading up to and including the Cultural Revolution. Holly Gayley retrieves the personal and prophetic dimensions of their courtship and its consummation in a twenty-year religious career that informs issues of gender and agency in Buddhism, cultural preservation among Tibetan communities, and alternative histories for minorities in China. The correspondence between Tare Lhamo and Namtrul Rinpoche is the first collection of "love letters" to come to light in Tibetan literature. Blending tantric imagery with poetic and folk song styles, their letters have a fresh vernacular tone comparable to the love songs of the Sixth Dalai Lama, but with an eastern Tibetan flavor. Gayley reads these letters against hagiographic writings about the couple, supplemented by field research, to illuminate representational strategies that serve to narrate cultural trauma in a redemptive key, quite unlike Chinese scar literature or the testimonials of exile Tibetans. With special attention to Tare Lhamo's role as a tantric heroine and her hagiographic fusion with Namtrul Rinpoche, Gayley vividly shows how Buddhist masters have adapted Tibetan literary genres to share private intimacies and address contemporary social concerns.

Book excerpt: Dr. Tuthill embarked on her first safari into the African bush in 2003, honoring the death of her best friend, the astronaut Kalpana Chawla, in the crash of the space shuttle Columbia. She and her husband fell deeply in love with the animals and the people they met in the wilds of southern Africa, and the experience changed their lives. They have traveled back every year and lovingly chronicled each experience in detailed letters to Kalpana's sisters in India. The letters follow the daily routine in remote bush camps, covering the details of camp life along with the excitement and thrill of walking safaris, canoe trips, and game drives. One can almost hear the hippos by night and smell the fresh lavender along the path, as Tuthill describes the nightly "sundowners" enjoyed with her beloved husband, and details the spectacular views and experiences they shared together. In this poignant set of travel essays Tuthill depicts the glories of ecotravel and demonstrates how our vacation dollars can be used to help save the continent of Africa.

What at first looks like nothing as much as an advertisement suddenly becomes something grander and more mysterious—a hand-painted love letter at billboard size. Combining community activism and public art, Powers and his team of sign mechanics collaborate with a neighborhood's residents to create visual jingles— sincere and often poignant affirmations and confessions that reflect the collective hopes and dreams of the host community. A Love Letter to the City gathers the artist's powerful public art project for the first time, including murals on the walls and rooftops of Brooklyn and Syracuse, New York; Philadelphia; Dublin and Belfast, Ireland; São Paolo, Brazil, and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Book excerpt: Believe In Africa; Love Letters to Singapore brings transformation in the minds of every individual that desires change in the development of themselves, community, and/or nation. Singapore, an island city-state off southern Malaysia, was once a developing nation in Asia. Today, it's a global financial capital. It was not by day dream or a nine day wonder for Singapore to be developed but rather by decades of sacrifice, courage, trust and exemplary leadership. In this book, each poem personifies Singapore as a woman in which the author admires. Just like how a man compliments a woman beauty, each poem compliments Singapore's beauty from its culture, food, to leadership. Love Letters to Singapore is purposed to inspire those reading to not be afraid to learn from others who defy all odds. We need not only to learn in our schools but also from one another, regardless of our backgrounds, to become tomorrow leaders.

Book excerpt: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'A lively and spirited book' DOUGLAS MURRAY 'A paean to the freedom and dignity that many in the West take for granted' PETER BOGHOSSIAN 'A cool, steady but urgent message that we should value and protect what we have' SPIKED 'Kisin's book [has] a powerful moral quality that makes it worth reading' SUNDAY TIMES For all of the West's failings - terrible food, cold weather, and questionable politicians with funny hair to name a few - it has its upsides. Konstantin would know. Growing up in the Soviet Union, he experienced first-hand the horrors of a socialist paradise gone wrong, having lived in extreme poverty with little access to even the most basic of necessities. It wasn't until he moved to the UK that Kisin found himself thriving in an open and tolerant society, receiving countless opportunities he would never have had otherwise. Funny, provocative and unswervingly perceptive, An Immigrant's Love letter to the West interrogates the developing sense of self-loathing the Western sphere has adopted and offers an alternative perspective. Exploring race politics, free speech, immigration and more, Kisin argues that wrongdoing and guilt need not pervade how we feel about the West - and Britain - today, and that despite all its ups and downs, it remains one of the best places to live in the world. After all, if an immigrant can't publicly profess their appreciation for this country, who can?

Book excerpt: Diana Richardson, an acclaimed authority on human sexuality, began a personal enquiry into the union of sex and meditation (the essence of tantra) over twenty five years ago while living in India. Through these innocent steps and motivated by simple curiosity, she gained deep insights into the spiritual and generative implications of sex that lie beyond its reproductive aspect. She stresses that it is the how of sex, and not the what of sex, that determines the difference. With additional information we can begin to honor the innate sexual intelligence that exists in our bodies as a subtle electro-magnetic reality. On this fine and delicate level man and woman function as equal yet opposite forces that are highly complimentary. Embracing this polarity potential can elevate and transform sex into an empowering and spiritual act, an experience that creates and sustains love, peace and harmony. Her simple, down to earth and practical approach as presented in her books has created a wave of positive resonance and response from readers worldwide.
