Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Louisiana, Yesterday and Today, three veteran newspapermen examine the history and character of one of America's most remarkable states. This comprehensive, entertaining work will inform natives of their rich heritage and familiarize others with the many sources of Louisiana's special charm. In concise, thematic chapters, the authors discuss practically every aspect of Louisiana's history. They explore in depth many specific events and eras, including the Louisiana Purchase, the Battle of New Orleans, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the rise of Huey P. Long. Illuminating Louisiana's wonderfully polyglot character, they trace the cultural milieu from earliest Indian days through the French and Spanish regimes into statehood. They tell of the pirate Jean Lafitte and the voodoo queen Marie Laveau, of the state's unique Cajun and Creole heritages, of the legendary red-light district of Storyville, and of the excitement and debauchery of Mardi Gras. As a bonus, the book provides an incisive look at the state's 64 parishes as it portrays Louisiana's history, population, economy, culture, and outstanding tourist attractions, evincing the diversity -- most notably between north and south -- that characterizes the state. An excellent guide for visitors who wish to learn about Louisiana's past as well as its present attractions, Louisiana, Yesterday and Today will also beckon natives to rediscover their heritage and the cultural wonderland that exists in their own backyard.

The seventy-six pieces that Frank A. de Caro has selected give readers a vivid sense of how Louisiana's unique blend of Old World, South, the exotic, and quintessential America has exerted a pull and hold on travelers. Included are writings by well-known figures such as Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt, Kate Chopin, John Steinbeck, Frederick Law Olmsted, Walker Percy, William Faulkner, Simone de Beauvoir, Henry Miller, John James Audubon, Calvin Trillin, Zora Neale Hurston, A. J. Liebling, William Least Heat Moon, and Frederick Turner. Dozens of other wayfarers are represented as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you think historians are dull . . . you need to read Boulard. . . . A brilliant history written with the verve and style most authors can only envy, Huey Long Invades New Orleans is a treat."-Dr. Michael Thomason, managing editorGulf Coast Historical Review By 1934, the senator from Louisiana stood on the precipice of national power. His Share the Wealth club had made him a national figure, and he set his sights on the presidency. One thing stood in his way-New Orleans. If Huey P. Long wanted to be considered a legitimate candidate for the presidency, he needed the support of the entire state. Or did he? The emotional, volatile Long despised the prim and proper politicians in New Orleans. They, in turn, regarded him as a thug. Their mutual animosity was palpable, and the powder keg finally exploded when Long ordered 3,000 militiamen into New Orleans. Was his decision a sound political strategy or a reckless personal vendetta? In his meticulous search for the answer, Garry Boulard interviewed more than two dozen people involved with Long and the conflict. He also unearthed never-before-published photos that complement his dramatic narrative. The result is an in-depth examination of the Kingfish and his attack on the city that dared oppose him.

It also lists major historical sites and repositories of primary materials. As the only comprehensive bibliography of the secondary sources about the state, ^ILouisiana History^R is an invaluable resource for scholars and researchers.

Book excerpt: In this provocative and poignant book, 500 Years Of Culture: Louisiana's Creole French & Metis People, Food, Language and Culture, I seek to provide my intelligent lay readers appropriate and useful scholarly resources which illustrate that a pre-Acadian culture of Canadian and North American Métis roots, to which was added European, African and later Spanish elements combined in both "Upper" and "Lower Louisiana" resulting in a multi-ethnic, but distinctly unique Louisiana Creole culture. Though reminiscent of other kindred Creole cultures and people of the world of the former French Empire, she remains unique. This unique historic, but forgotten culture existed prior to the arrival of the Acadians, and its cultural and linguistic traditions resulted in Louisiana's historic "Creole" culture. This multi-ethnic culture's food ways, language and social traditions were hijacked and promoted as if it was something totally new in the 1970s and 80s, and then relabeled "Cajun" with no regard for the pre-existant and dominant history and sensibilities of the non-white ethnicities who were the true originators and creators of Louisiana's long indigenous and pre-Acadian culture! It is my hope to sufficiently demonstrate through this historical narrative, which is both passionate and humorous, how greed, ignorance and commerce joined hands in relabeling Louisiana's historic multi-ethnic Creole French and metis culture as if Acadian-Canada was the source of this remarkable and unusual culture which remains foreign to anything in Acadie! Informative and well-researched, I submit to you the reading and caring public, this revision which is also a much more readable, better edited and supplemented text. In this book, for example, a badly needed chapter on the cultural relationship between Louisiana Creole and Haitian Creole culture is provided and will prove to be a great source of help in avoiding needless confusion of these two separate, but kindred cultures. Though small, this little book will no doubt, prove to be a powerhouse of jaw-dropping facts, as it is an uproariously humorous expose' of one of the most popular cultural forces in America and across the planet today! And, notwithstanding our best efforts, sometimes typographical errors and misses occur. For whatever imperfections of text remain, I take full responsibility as I also apologize to you dear reader.
