Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 1: April 1949 The choice of a puppy should not be as uncertain a risk as many prospective dog owners are led to believe. If a few simple qualifications are kept in mind, and the buyer does not act too hastily, then hischances are more than fair that his begin ning will be highly successful. The first and most important of these qualifications is that of breeding. Go into the field with the parents of the pup and actually see them perform. Carefully study movements, style, nose, and attitude to ward each other, and watch the use they make of reasoning the method of outwit ting the crafty game birds they seek. Con sider their field etiquette, response to com mand, and observe their admiration for the handler. If the sire and dam possess the qualifications you desire, you may rest assured the pups have inherited some natural hunting ability. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 2: December 1949 The former range of the Wild Turkey in North America extended from Southern Canada, New England, New York, south to Tennessee and Arkansas and Florida and the Gulf Coast and into the Republic of Mexico, from which, already stated, came the original European importations. The Mexican subspecies from which was derived our domestic turkey, has white tips to the tail feathers and white tips to the upper tail coverts (the feathers that form a cape over the tail). This Mexican sub - species interbreeds freely with the domestic turkey and for that reason pure strains of the true Wild Turkey of the United States are rare. Commissioner Ernest S. Clements, after a great deal of investigation, was able to se cure for his restocking program in the State of Louisiana the purest native stock now available, the planting of which in appropriate areas of the State, was well set forth in the Louisiana Conservationist of October, 1949, by Major Brown, Director of the Fish and Game Division. The singles settled about 50 yards from the bank and we moved it. We were hot and tired and so was my dog. He pointed a single and I winged him. Agitator immediately took after him and as the bird leaped into the air he caught him on the jump, grasped the bird easily in his jaws, and then bird and dog floated over the river bank into the red-muddy waters of the Chattahoochee, out of sight, some 35 feet down the bank. We rushed to the river. But Agitator was not to be seen. It was now and getting hotter every minute. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 15: January-February, 1963 It is gratifying to me to note that in the past year there has been an obvious interest in grass roots conservation education and more public interest in the wildlife and fisheries resources of the state, their management, utilization, and perpetuation. This is not a sudden awakening on the part of the people of Louisiana. On the contrary, this growing interest can be interpreted as the result of a progressive campaign by the Louisiana Wild Life and Fisheries Commission to bring about an interest on the part of all the people in the state in these natural resources which mean so much to so many people. In making our plans for the months ahead, it would further the good which has already been accomplished for us to redouble our efforts so that this growing interest in Louisiana's wildlife and fisheries resources will be-passed along from person to person. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservation Review, Vol. 2: March, 1932 Sanctuaries of adequate size, so situated as to serve the more interesting forms of the various types, seem to be the only solution to a problem that has aroused to earnest' effort a number of interested individuals and organizations, espe cially the American Society of Mammalogists, and the New York Zoological Society. It seems fit ting that the American Nature Association, which exists mainly to work for the preservation of our threatened wild life resources, should end its in fluence to this worthy effort. It was this decision that largely motivated the pack-finley expedition to Southern Alaska in the summer of 1931, an account of which will appear in next month's issue of Nature Magazine. Another camera hunter John M. Holzworth, has spent several sea sons With Alaska's large bears, also on Admiralty Island, and has published in book form an able defence of the brown bear, based largely on his own close associations with the animal. The wild life of Alaska is under the admin istration of the Alaska Game Commission, com posed of a member from each of the four j udicial, divisions and a representative of the Biological Survey. Under its regulations the large bears, though classed as game animals, enjoy at the hands of residents no close season and no bag limits, excepting in the three areas classed as National Parks or National Monuments, and in certain other restricted areas. In most of the Territory, therefore, even in the seven restricted areas, the large bears are given no protection from residents. For a non-resident, and over most of Alaska, where hunting is permitted from September 1 to June 20, the bag limit is two bears. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 11: February, 1959 We see, for instance, that every year during July, the white shrimp (fig. 1) shows a marked seasonal scarcity in the commercial fishery as compared to the months before or after. Actually great quantities of very small White shrimp without commercial value en ter inside waters as early as June and usually congre gate in waters too shallow for trawling. As they grow and seek deeper water, the legal size limit and closed season, plus a certain amount of escapement in any possible illegal catches, all tend to mitigate against their exploitation. After the shrimping season legally opens in the middle of August, the fast-growing juvenile white shrimp are trawled heavily; at first by small nets operating in shallow water, then as they return to sea, they must run a gauntlet against successively larger nets. After July the white shrimp graph takes the form of an offset skyscraper. The peak comes in October when the large adolescent individuals returning to the sea tend to concentrate in the channels leading thereto and in the sea itself outside the passes. These season shrimp as the fishermen call them, are the big money crop, that which makes or breaks fisherman, dealer and processor alike. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 11: May-June 1959 Present plans call for the introduction of native duck food plants such as smartweeds, chufa and others. A fair stand of smartweed has been produced on one of the food plots as a result of broadcasting seed over the area during the summer. Good dove and quail foods such as buckwheat, corn and soybeans will be planted on the higher areas. Squirrel hunting in Bodcau Bottom is usually very good. Due probably to a poor acorn crop in 1957, and a scarcity of food during the summer, there were very few young squirrel produced in 1958. This resulted in below average squirrel hunting success during the 1958-59 season. Deer are increasing in and around the area. There have been two deer releases, one in 1955 and one in 1956, in the vicinity of Bodcau Bottom. It is not uncommonly new for one to see deer during visits to the area. A deer hunting season is planned for the area in the near future. This area is a good wild turkey habitat and it is planned to introduce this magnificent game bird on the area as soon as possible. Along the transition zone of Bodcau, where the hills end and the bottoms begin, are large fields that were once cultivated. Disking such areas increases the growth and spread of goatweed and other good game foods. It is planned to fence and plant some of these areas to such game foods as vetch, chocolate weed, common lespedeza, corn and others. These open areas already support a fair population of doves and quail, but with the addition of the proposed food plots the carrying capacity of these areas will be increased. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 7: April, 1955 Salt water intrusion of the coastal marshes is an other factor of considerable importance. Excessive salt water intrusion results in fresh and estuarine waters becoming more saline and marine with ac companying environmental changes - one type of vegetation will be replaced by another, while one population of animals may be replaced by another or suffer a marked decrease in numbers. Generally speaking, such changes in our marshes are deiri mental to our wildlife, especially waterfowl and fur bearers. Navigation channels and canals associated with the Gulf of Mexico have enhanced salt water intru sion in south Louisiana. Meanwhile, above this area diversion of waters from their natural drainage routes by flood control, drainage, irrigation, and land reclamation projects, has reduced the volume of incoming fresh waters over wide areas. Evidence indicates that the resulting stabilization of these waters has in turn resulted in many of these bodies of water becoming choked with water hyacinths and other noxious plants. In southwest Louisiana where the demands are high for sweet or fresh water for irrigation of the rice crops, salt water intrusion has become a problem of great proportions. Coastal shallow fresh marshes are becoming dry; apparently this may be attributed to drainage and the absence of incoming Water due to losses to irrigation and drought conditions. Considerable benefits may be attributed to the rice lands, however, as feeding grounds for the wintering waterfowl. The companies are enabled to render their customers better service, with less loss, in transportation and accounts. The service revealed that the patrons of the companies - clubs, hotels, cafes, roadhouses, and local distributors - were pleased and a decid ed preference shown for the frozen, rather than the fresh shrimp. The developments should be fol lowed closely, and may point the way to a solution of some difficulties which you now face.
