Louis Philippe, the late king of the French, and one of the most remarkable men in Europe, was born in Paris, October 6, 1773. He is the eldest son of Louis Philippe Joseph, Duke of Orleans, better known under his revolutionary title of Philippe Egalite, and of Marie, only daughter and heiress of the wealthy Duke of Penthievre. The Orleans branch of the Bourbon family, of which Louis Philippe is now the head, originated in Philippe, a younger son of Louis XIII., created Due d'Orleans by his elder brother Louis XIV., and of whom the late French king is the grandson's great-grandson. Philippe, the first Duke of Orleans, was twice married; his second wife being Elizabeth Charlotte of Bohemia, granddaughter of James I. of England. From this lady the Orleans family are descended, and through her trace a direct relationship to the line of Stuart, and the present royal family of England. While a child, Louis Philippe was entitled Duke of Valois; but on His father succeeding to the title of Duke of Orleans, in 1785, he became Duke of Chartres, which for a number of years he retained. Whatever were the personal and political faults of Citizen Egalite, he was a kind father, and beloved by his children, five in number, one of whom, however, a daughter, died young. Book excerpt: Louis Philippe was King of the French from 1830 to 1848 as the leader of the Orl�anist party. As a member of the cadet branch of the Royal House of France and a cousin of King Louis XVI of France by reason of his descent from their common ancestors Louis XIII and Louis XIV, he had earlier found it necessary to flee France during the period of the French Revolution in order to avoid imprisonment and execution, a fate that actually befell his father Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orl�ans. He spent 21 years in exile after he left France in 1793. He was proclaimed king in 1830 after his cousin Charles X was forced to abdicate in the wake of the events of the July Revolution of that year. His government, known as the July Monarchy, was dominated by members of a wealthy French elite and numerous former Napoleonic officials. He followed conservative policies, especially under the influence of the French statesman Fran�ois Guizot during the period 1840-48. He also promoted friendship with Britain and sponsored colonial expansion, notably the conquest of Algeria. His popularity faded as economic conditions in France deteriorated in 1847, and he was forced to abdicate after the outbreak of the French Revolution of 1848. He lived out his life in exile in Great Britain.
