Book Synopsis Selected Poems of Jules Breton by : Jules Breton
Download or read book Selected Poems of Jules Breton written by Jules Breton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vincent van Gogh loved both art and poetry. He especially loved the nineteenth-century Realist art and French poetry of Jules Adolphe Aime Louis Breton (1827-1906). Both Breton's art and poetry focused on the French countryside, peasant themes and, at times, his Christian faith. Van Gogh copied a number of Breton's poems and sent them in letters to his brother, Theo, and to Anthon van Rappard, an artist friend. He also promised to send Breton's complete book of poems, Les Champs et la mer /The Fields and the Sea ) to Theo. This book includes Breton's original poems Van Gogh copied with translations and commentary on each poem by the translator. Most of Breton's poems were dedicated to fellow artists or poets. These metrical translations reflect the rhyme and meter of the original French poems. Breton became well known in America for his 1884 oil on canvas, Le chant de l'alouette/The Song of the Lark (Henry Field Memorial Collection, The Art Institute of Chicago). It was exhibited at the Chicago World's Fair in 1934 where First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt stated it was her own favorite painting. This book's aim is to introduce Breton's poetry to the English-speaking world.

Book Synopsis Théodore Rousseau and the Rise of the Modern Art Market by : Simon Kelly
Download or read book Théodore Rousseau and the Rise of the Modern Art Market written by Simon Kelly and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 19th century in France witnessed the emergence of the structures of the modern art market that remain until this day. This book examines the relationship between the avant-garde Barbizon landscape painter, Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867), and this market, exploring the constellation of patrons, art dealers and critics who surrounded the artist. It argues for the pioneering role of Rousseau, his patrons and his public in the origins of the modern art market, and, in so doing, shifts attention away from the more traditional focus on the novel careers of the Impressionists and their supporters. Drawing on extensive archival research, the book provides new insight into the role of the modern artist as professional. It provides a new understanding of the complex iconographical and formal choices within Rousseau's work, rediscovering the original radical charge that once surrounded the artist's work and led to extensive and peculiarly modern tensions with the market place.

Book Synopsis Rural Artists' Colonies in Europe, 1870-1910 by : Nina Lübbren
Download or read book Rural Artists' Colonies in Europe, 1870-1910 written by Nina Lübbren and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book presents a critical study of pictorial narrative in nineteenth-century European painting. Covering works from France, Germany, Britain, Italy and elsewhere, it traces the ways in which immensely popular artists like Jean-Léon Gérôme, Karl von Piloty and William Quiller Orchardson used unique visual strategies to tell thrilling and engaging stories. Regardless of genre, content or national context, these paintings share a fundamental modern narrative mode. Unlike traditional art, they do not rely on textual sources; nor do they tell stories through the human body alone. Instead, they experiment with objects, spaces, cause-and-effect relations and open-ended ambiguity, prompting viewers and reviewers to read for clues in order to weave their own elaborate tales.

Book Synopsis Translation and the Arts in Modern France by : Sonya Stephens
Download or read book Translation and the Arts in Modern France written by Sonya Stephens and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translation and the Arts in Modern France sits at the intersection of transposition, translation, and ekphrasis, finding resonances in these areas across periods, places, and forms. Within these contributions, questions of colonization, subjugation, migration, and exile connect Benin to Brittany, and political philosophy to the sentimental novel and to film. Focusing on cultural production from 1830 to the present and privileging French culture, the contributors explore interactions with other cultures, countries, and continents, often explicitly equating intercultural permeability with representational exchange. In doing so, the book exposes the extent to which moving between media and codes—the very process of translation and transposition—is a defining aspect of creativity across time, space, and disciplines.
