Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors transcribed data from microfilm available from the Library of Virginia for marriages reported between 1881 and 1900, then compared this information to the actual license and return (whenever possible) and to the marriage books available in the Clerk's Office, Loudoun County Court House, Leesburg, Virginia. The authors found much information which was not included on the microfilm and have added it to the transcription. Arranged alphabetically by the groom's surname, a typical entry includes groom's name, bride's name, date of marriage, place of marriage, race, previous marital status, place of birth, residence, occupation, date of license, consent, marriage official and date of return. An index to brides' names completes this work.

Book excerpt: Dr. Bosworth's treatise on Randolph County is fairly evenly divided between local history and genealogy. The narrative begins with a recounting of the adventures of its pioneering British, Irish, and German families, like the Tygarts, the organization of the county and its court, and the laying out of towns before attending to such customary topics as conflicts between pioneers and Native Americans, road construction, education, the Civil War in Randolph County, Randolph County professionals, etc. Strewn among these chapters are valuable lists of marriages, public officials, land patents, soldiers, physicians, attorneys, and so on. Of even greater interest to researchers, of course, are the scores of biographical notes at the conclusion of the book and the roughly 100 genealogical sketches of Randolph County founding families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable true story of the woman who sheltered Confederate soldiers and gathered intelligence—and the secret book given to her by J. E. B. Stuart. As the Civil War raged, Confederate brigadier general J. E. B. Stuart entrusted a secret album to Laura Ratcliffe, a young girl in Fairfax County, “as a token of his high appreciation of her patriotism, admiration of her virtues, and pledge of his lasting esteem.” A devoted Southerner, Laura provided a safe haven for Rebel forces, along with intelligence gathered from passing Union soldiers. Ratcliffe’s book contains four poems and forty undated signatures: twenty-six of Confederate officers and soldiers and fourteen of loyal Confederate civilians. In A Southern Spy in Northern Virginia, Charles V. Mauro uncovers the mystery behind this album, identifying who the soldiers were and when they could have signed its pages. The result is a fascinating look at the covert lives and relationships of civilians and soldiers during the war, kept hidden until now. Includes photos and illustrations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1918 Lucile Berkeley Buchanan Jones received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, becoming its first female African American graduate (though she was not allowed to "walk" at graduation, nor is she pictured in the 1918 CU yearbook). In Remembering Lucile, author Polly McLean depicts the rise of the African American middle class through the historical journey of Lucile and her family from slavery in northern Virginia to life in the American West, using their personal story as a lens through which to examine the greater experience of middle-class Blacks in the early twentieth century. The first-born daughter of emancipated slaves, Lucile refused to be defined by the racist and sexist climate of her times, settling on a career path in teaching that required great courage in the face of pernicious Jim Crow laws. Embracing her sister’s dream for higher education and W. E. B. Du Bois’s ideology, she placed education and intelligence at the forefront of her life, teaching in places where she could most benefit African American students. Over her 105 years she was an eyewitness to spectacular, inspiring, and tragic moments in American history, including horrific lynchings and systemic racism in housing and business opportunities, as well as the success of women's suffrage and Black-owned businesses and educational institutions. Remembering Lucile employs a unique blend of Black feminist historiography and wider discussions of race, gender, class, religion, politics, and education to illuminate major events in African American history and culture, as well as the history of the University of Colorado and its relationship to Black students and alumni, as it has evolved from institutional racism to welcoming acceptance. This extensive biography paints a vivid picture of a strong, extraordinary Black woman who witnessed an extraordinary time in America and rectifies her omission from CU’s institutional history. The book fills an important gap in the literature of the history of Blacks in the Rocky Mountain region and will be of significance to anyone interested in American history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the ninth volume of a comprehensive history that traces the “Presidential Line” of the Washingtons. Volume one began with the immigrant John Washington who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and was the great-grandfather of President George Washington. It contained the record of their descendants for a total of seven generations. Subsequent volumes two through eight continued this family history for an additional eight generations, highlighting most notable members (volume two) and tracing lines of descent from the royalty and nobility of England and continental Europe (volume three). Volume nine collects over 8,500 descendants of the recently discovered line of William Wright (died in Franklin Co., Va., ca. 1809). It also provides briefer accounts of five other early Wright families of Virginia that have often been mentioned by researchers as close kinsmen of George Washington, including: William Wright (died in Fauquier Co., Va., ca. 1805), Frances Wright and her husband Nimrod Ashby, and William Wright (died in Greensville Co., Va., by 1827). A cumulative index will complete the series as volume ten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation was originally undertaken at the request of the Board of Supervisors of Brunswick County, who suggested that Miss Fothergill copy and index the Brunswick County marriage bonds from 1752, when they first appear among miscellaneous papers, until the commencement of vital records in 1852. When once she set to the task, Miss Fothergill discovered that she could improve the basic list of marriages by adding inferential marriage proofs from estate settlements, wills, and deeds. The resulting compilation, running from 1730 to 1852, is a composite of more than 3,000 marriage records. As is customary in such compilations, men are listed in alphabetical order, with an index of brides comprising a separate section. Incidental information found among the records, and employed here, includes references to places of residence and to guardians, sureties, and parents. All told the work indentifies 7,500 brides, grooms, parents and sureties, and the exact date of the marriage or bond. With an improved index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a compilation of data found in 1,478 marriage bonds or consents of Essex County, Virginia, for the years 1804 through 1850. These are the earliest marriage records that survive for the county those before were either burned or inadvertently destroyed. These original records are not generally served to researchers, rather researchers are directed to a bound Register of Marriages (Book One) that lists the bonds. Each entry references the page in this Register on which the information may be found. The most bonds were issued in 1835 (forty-seven) and 1827 (forty), with the other years averaging about thirty each. The fewest bonds are found for 1826 (seventeen).Individual entries in this work were derived primarily from marriage bonds and consents (by guardian or parent), and have been supplemented with data taken from outside sources such as: family Bible records, cemetery records, military records, and other publications. Not all entries contain information from outside sources. The format is two-fold: the first part of the paragraph is used for sequencing of the groom, and includes what data the compiler has found outside of the marriage record itself. Followed by this is the consolidated public marriage record (with the names of the bride and groom in capital letters), including the date of the marriage bond, and citing the main sources for the information used. The text is supplemented with nearly 900 footnotes by the compiler, an every-name index that contains over 9,000 entries, and a bibliography.

Book excerpt: This work continues the author's effort to document marriages between residents of different Virginia counties. Many sources were used to compile this listing, including church records, minister's returns, marriage licenses, newspaper articles, and court records. The marriages are arranged alphabetically by groom's surname and include records for whites as well as blacks (many of whom had acquired surnames after the Civil War). The reader may find such information as: date of marriage, parents of the participants, occupation, race, previous marital status, residence, date and place of birth and death, and military affiliation. When the name of a church in which the ceremony took place is specifically mentioned in the marriage document, it is included in this listing. The index provides easy reference to brides. A small section of Spotsylvania County births is also included, taken from an 1853 to 1868 birth registration book. The author has refined this list to include only those people for whom a full name was given, and who lived past infancy. Many Negroes listed in this birth record did not have last names; those that could be easily traced without a surname are included here. This volume also includes a map and description of local sites, such as historic buildings, churches, and cemeteries.
