Download or read book Lost Treasures written by Gerard Oak and published by . This book was released on 2019-08 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The call of history and archaeology, and the physical 'treasures' that are often associated with it, have entertained me for my entire life. As a child I would bury a jar of coins just to dig them back up months later. Indeed, every little item washed up on the beach or glimpsed under the ocean was analysed by a curious eye, the origin of every bone in the wild was guessed at and the classics such as Treasure Island and The Count of Monte Cristo were read over and again for inspiration. As time wore on, however, I noticed that the dreams of lost civilisations, sunken shipwrecks, treasure caves and the secret hideouts of outlaws did not abate. If anything, as I began to travel and experience the world, these dreams grew. With today's access to seemingly unlimited information at your fingertips, and the ability to travel like never before, the time has never been more right to chase history. This book is the tip of the iceberg on your way to a life of adventure. Ten treasures spread throughout the world that have been lost to time, but not without hope of return. Ten historical targets that are all within your reach. Neither are these treasures sunk too deep, aged beyond the reach of written record or guarded too heavily by the earth. A little planning and a sprinkle of luck is all the recipe you need. Before you begin - A warning. The information you read in the following pages is bathed in the theory, circumstance and ideology of all those who have tried and failed before you. Nothing is gospel, nothing is fact, until you make it so. The realm of treasure hunting leads to disappointment far more often than she leads to glory - but then all the greater the glory. Good luck and good hunting.

Download or read book The Secret written by Byron Preiss and published by ibooks. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.
Download or read book Palmyra written by Paul Veyne and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located northeast of Damascus, in an oasis surrounded by palms and two mountain ranges, the ancient city of Palmyra has the aura of myth. According to the Bible, the city was built by Solomon. Regardless of its actual origins, it was an influential city, serving for centuries as a caravan stop for those crossing the Syrian Desert. It became a Roman province under Tiberius and served as the most powerful commercial center in the Middle East between the first and the third centuries CE. But when the citizens of Palmyra tried to break away from Rome, they were defeated, marking the end of the city’s prosperity. The magnificent monuments from that earlier era of wealth, a resplendent blend of Greco-Roman architecture and local influences, stretched over miles and were among the most significant buildings of the ancient world—until the arrival of ISIS. In 2015, ISIS fought to gain control of the area because it was home to a prison where many members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood had been held, and ISIS went on to systematically destroy the city and murder many of its inhabitants, including the archaeologist Khaled al-Asaad, the antiquities director of Palymra. In this concise and elegiac book, Paul Veyne, one of Palymra’s most important experts, offers a beautiful and moving look at the history of this significant lost city and why it was—and still is—important. Today, we can appreciate the majesty of Palmyra only through its pictures and stories, and this book offers a beautifully illustrated memorial that also serves as a lasting guide to a cultural treasure.

Book excerpt: The author of Hidden History offers a fascinating tour through centuries of buried riches, stolen artifacts, and other true tales of treasure. The allure of treasure has captivated people for centuries. But is it purely a desire for wealth that draws us to tales of hidden riches, or is it also the romantic appeal of uncovering lost ancient artifacts? The stories behind the loss and recovery of ancient treasures often read like historical suspense fiction. In Ancient Treasures, readers discover the true histories of lost hoards, looted archaeological artifacts, and sunken treasures, including: The Sevso Treasure, a hoard of large silver vessels from the late Roman Empire—estimated to be worth $200 million—looted in the 1970s and sold on the black market. The fabulous wealth of Roman and Viking hoards buried in the ground for safekeeping, only to be unearthed centuries later by humble metal detectorists. The wrecks of the Spanish treasure fleets, whose New World plunder has been the target of elaborate salvage attempts by modern treasure hunters
