Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up, Jerry Thompson knew only that his grandfather was a gritty, “mixed-blood” Cherokee cowboy named Joe Lynch Davis. That was all anyone cared to say about the man. But after Thompson’s mother died, the award-winning historian discovered a shoebox full of letters that held the key to a long-lost family history of passion, violence, and despair. Wrecked Lives and Lost Souls, the result of Thompson’s sleuthing into his family’s past, uncovers the lawless life and times of a man at the center of systematic cattle rustling, feuding, gun battles, a bloody range war, bank robberies, and train heists in early 1900s Indian Territory and Oklahoma. Through painstaking detective work into archival sources, newspaper accounts, and court proceedings, and via numerous interviews, Thompson pieces together not only the story of his grandfather—and a long-forgotten gang of outlaws to rival the infamous Younger brothers—but also the dark path of a Cherokee diaspora from Georgia to Indian Territory. Davis, born in 1891, grew up on a family ranch on the Canadian River, outside the small community of Porum in the Cherokee Nation. The range was being fenced, and for the Davis family and others, cattle rustling was part of a way of life—a habit that ultimately spilled over into violence and murder. The story “goes way back to the wild & wooly cattle days of the west,” an aunt wrote to Thompson’s mother, “when there was cattle rustling, bank robberies & feuding.” One of these feuds—that Joe Davis was “raised right into”—was the decade-long Porum Range War, which culminated in the murder of Davis’s uncle in 1907. In fleshing out the details of the range war and his grandfather’s life, Thompson brings to light the brutality and far-reaching consequences of an obscure chapter in the history of the American West.

It is 1987 and Hargeisa waits. Whispers of revolution travel on the dry winds, but still the dictatorship remains secure. Soon, through the eyes of three women, we will see Somalia fall. Nine-year-old Deqo has left the vast refugee camp where she was born, lured to the city by the promise of her first pair of shoes. Kawsar, a solitary widow, is trapped in her little house with its garden clawed from the desert, confined to her bed after a savage beating in the local police station. Filsan, a young female soldier, has moved from Mogadishu to suppress the rebellion growing in the north. As the country is unraveled by a civil war that will shock the world, the fates of these three women are twisted irrevocably together. Nadifa Mohamed was born in Hargeisa and was exiled before the outbreak of war. In The Orchard of Lost Souls, she returns to Hargeisa in her imagination. Intimate, frank, brimming with beauty and fierce love, this novel is an unforgettable account of ordinary lives lived in extraordinary times.

Book excerpt: Meet the Lost Souls. Clive would be just a normal guy, if he weren't constantly assaulted telepathically by the thoughts and feelings of everyone around him. Catherine is a lot like someone you might know, until she abandons her successful career as a businesswoman and takes to the road with practically nothing but the clothes on her back. Razer is the cutest little girl you'll ever see, even when she's drinking your blood and hiding from the sunlight. Ander is a typical teenager who ran away from home with his girlfriend, except for his constant terror of fading away and being haunted by nightmares from another dimension. They don't know each other, and they don't know their lives are all connected, but they're in for the ride of their lives in this intriguing story of psychological horror, sorrow, and seeking redemption. A look underneath the surface of everyday life reveals the secret, dark spiderweb of influence we all weave around each other.

Book excerpt: "The Lost Souls and their Bodies" satirically explores the socio-political settings of the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western lands from which main characters originate only to be united on a Northern island. They all experience voids described as a fictional space of nothingness. Worldly ambitions can never be sufficient for the souls and are barely ever satiable for their bodies coming from different cultures and religions; Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Each character has a dream that reflects their deepest longings and fears despite decadent life settings. Yet they only truly find fulfillment in moments of disinterested love when destiny brings them together. The magical character - the Unwell Man - represents a crazy man from Lea's town in the chaotic Southern lands with a soul that registers injustice, war tragedy, birth and death. Borderless and separated, united and confined; it is a journey of the lost souls and their bodies to their final destination.

Book excerpt: These captivating short stories portray three major periods in modern Korean history: the forces of colonial modernity during the late 1930s; the postcolonial struggle to rebuild society after four decades of oppression, emasculation, and cultural exile (1945 to 1950); and the attempt to reconstruct a shattered land and a traumatized nation after the Korean War. Lost Souls echoes the exceptional work of China's Shen Congwen and Japan's Kawabata Yasunari. Modernist narratives set in the metropolises of Tokyo and Pyongyang alternate with starkly realistic portraits of rural life. Surrealist tales suggest the unsettling sensation of colonial domination, while stories of the outcast embody the thrill and terror of independence and survival in a land dominated by tradition and devastated by war. Written during the chaos of 1945, "Booze" recounts a fight between Koreans for control of a former Japanese-owned distillery. "Toad" relates the suffering created by hundreds of thousands of returning refugees, and stories from the 1950s confront the catastrophes of the Korean War and the problematic desire for autonomy. Visceral and versatile, Lost Souls is a classic work on the possibilities of transition that showcases the innovation and craftsmanship of a consummate and widely celebrated storyteller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it really possible to live a godly life? This book considers the most imposing query of many young Christians. Jesus Christ, in His Sermon on the Mount, emphasized the necessity of a holy or nobler life than that of the sanctimonious people. He said, Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter in to the kingdom of heaven. Moreover, Jesus said, Be ye perfect even as your father is perfect. Any inquisitive person may wonder, Is it possible to live a life of such perfection as God is demanding? Youth and the young in Christ may wonder if such godly life, as necessitated by Christ, is a reality. Many people, though outwardly appearing to be still, may be struggling with contradiction inwardly. Some might have even come to the conclusion that godly life is humanly impossible. Most appallingly, some may even be thinking that all believers in Jesus Christ are hypocrites. This book demonstrates, through the important truths from the Holy Bible, that godly living is a reality, and it is possible even in these days to live a godly life.

Book excerpt: With this groundbreaking book, discover the critical connections between anxiety and grief—and learn practical strategies for healing, based on the Kübler-Ross stages model. If you're suffering from anxiety but not sure why, or if you're struggling with loss and looking for solace, Anxiety: The Missing Stage of Grief offers help and answers. As grief expert Claire Bidwell Smith discovered in her own life—and in her practice with her therapy clients—significant loss and unresolved grief are primary underpinnings of anxiety. Using research and real life stories, Smith breaks down the physiology of anxiety, providing a concrete explanation that will help you heal. Starting with the basics questions—“What is anxiety?” and “What is grief?” and moving to concrete approaches such as making amends, taking charge, and retraining your brain, Anxiety takes a big step beyond Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's widely accepted five stages to unpack everything from our age-old fears about mortality to the bare vulnerability a loss can make us feel. With concrete tools and coping strategies for panic attacks, getting a handle on anxious thoughts, and more, Smith bridges these two emotions in a way that is deeply empathetic and profoundly practical.

Book excerpt: This original, field-changing collection explores the plasticity and unfinishedness of human subjects and lifeworlds, advancing the conceptual terrain of an anthropology of becoming. People's becomings trouble and exceed ways of knowing and acting, producing new possibilities for research, methodology, and writing. The contributors creatively bridge ethnography and critical theory in a range of worlds on the edge, from war and its aftermath, economic transformation, racial inequality, and gun violence to religiosity, therapeutic markets, animal rights activism, and abrupt environmental change. Defying totalizing analytical schemes, these visionary essays articulate a human science of the uncertain and unknown and restore a sense of movement and possibility to ethics and political practice. Unfinished invites readers to consider the array of affects, ideas, forces, and objects that shape contemporary modes of existence and future horizons, opening new channels for critical thought and creative expression. Contributors. Lucas Bessire, João Biehl, Naisargi N. Dave, Elizabeth A. Davis, Michael M. J. Fischer, Angela Garcia, Peter Locke, Adriana Petryna, Bridget Purcell, Laurence Ralph, Lilia M. Schwarcz
