Book excerpt: The Lost Words by composer James Burton takes its inspiration and text from the award-winning 'cultural phenomenon' and book of the same name by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: a book that was, in turn, a creative response to the removal of everyday nature words like acorn, newt and otter from a new edition of a widely used children's dictionary. Both the book and Burton's 32-minute work, which is written in 12 short movements for upper-voice choir in up to 3 voice parts (with either orchestral or piano accompaniment), celebrates each lost word with a beautiful poem or 'spell', magically brought to life in Burton's music. At its heart, the work delivers a powerful message about the need to close the gap between childhood and the natural world. Burton's piece was co-commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé Children's Choir and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children's Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children's Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic. Vocal Score Co-commission by Boston Symphony and Hallé Concerts Society for their respective Children's Choirs. Two versions - with orchestral or with piano accompaniment. The vocal score is the same for both versions. James Burton is a composer but also a conductor. He is conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and choral director of the Boston Symphony. The book The Lost Words, exquisitely designed, has won multiple awards and is an international best-seller. The vocal score includes Jackie Morris's beautiful imagery in its cover design.

In this first in a series of beautifully illustrated books that celebrate the power and beauty of the animal kingdom, Catherine Feher-Elston considers the raven in the contexts of mythology, folklore, history, and science. From the raven's role as trickster in Native American religion to his ability to captivate ornithologists and biologists with his intriguing behaviors, Ravensong pays tribute to the elegance and grandeur of two of America's most ubiquitous avian species.

Book excerpt: I am not a writer by any means, just a simple county girl, daughter, wife, mother and friend. I’m a feed truck driver for a local hog production company. My husband is a School teacher. We neither hold impressive worldly titles or celebrity status, but God has inspired me over the past couple of years to share our story of loss in book form. As Christians, we believe our pain carries a purpose, a purpose of hope in tragedy. I can’t imagine not sharing our story with others experiencing the struggle of living in the loss of a child. My soul intent is to bring a measure of insight, expectation and anticipation for what lies ahead if we choose to trust God and His timing. Life doesn’t always turn out the way we planned, but God provides the people and tools we need to navigate through His will over ours. Please read, be encouraged, and be blessed!

Book excerpt: In the year 1476 of the kingdom of KnorraSky (NORA-SKY), a war is raging. On the one side of this vicious conflict is the Kree Kingdom lead by the Horde King Gerick and his evil wife Queen Sheral. On the opposing side were King Noman and his wife, Queen Raven, and they lead the fight for the great kingdom known as KnorraSky. This conflict was started almost forty cycles past by the king of the Kree in an attempt to find two lost parts of an ancient book and unite them with a third part that had come into his possession. The book was called Ru-ell or the Book of Power. The missing books that the Kree were doggedly pursuing were thought to be somewhere in the western part of the land of KnorraSky. The Kree valued this book greatly because it was said that a completed Ru-ell would provide unlimited power to the one who could unite it and thereafter learn its secrets. During a battle deep in the Kree territory at a place called Key-Hole Pass, a 'Deception' occurs and the largest part of the fighting men of KnorraSky abandoned Noman and his small force in the middle of the night. Along with the men his dear wife, Raven, is missing also. Noman was beside himself over the treasonous act of one of his most trusted people and the loss of his wife was almost unbearable. As morning comes, Gerick attacks with a staggering force and Noman is captured and his forces are all but wiped out. To escape from the evil Queen Sheral, requires the help of new friends and a very dangerous adventure. After returning to KnorraSky an uprising occurs and an opportunist named Gillis brings the charge of treason against King Noman and Symonious, the First Knight of Or. Gillis contends that Noman is responsible for the 'Deception', or at the least knew it was to occur. At the trial Gillis puts forth a false witness and Noman and Symonious are sentenced to death. A narrow escape, aided by the First Knights of eight territories of KnorraSky, kept them alive. But now as fugitives with a great price on their heads, they must flee to the mountains far to the west. After changing his name and the way he looks, Noman becomes a wanderer in the land and he begins to deal with a deep-set depression that is caused by the loss of his wife, Raven. He also feels guilty over a decision he had made at Key-Hole Pass that cost him the battle and the lives of thousands of the fighting men of KnorraSky. Because of this he is no longer the confident man that he once was and his mind often becomes clouded with feelings of worthlessness and guilt. Where once strength and confidence held sway, now weakness, uncertainty and distrust overpower this once powerful man. As the cycles pass Gillis becomes a powerful leader in the land and he makes peace with King Gerick of the Kree. However, Gerick is only using the greedy Gillis as a means to an end and in time he moves on KnorraSky and captures the kingdom. Now, with the hordes of King Gerick bearing down on him, King Noman must once again find the strength to lead his people. Can Noman shake the darkness that clouds his mind and hinders him from stopping Gerick and his relentless hordes? Will he learn the identity of the person that caused the 'Deception' at Key-Hole pass. The 'Deception' that led to the loss of the kingship, the kingdom and his Queen. And most importantly to Noman, will he ever see his dear wife, Raven, again? The answers to these questions lie twisted and entangled within the pages of KnorraSky, volume 1 The Deception.

Book excerpt: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A New York Times Notable Book of the Year WINNER of the NBCC John Leonard Prize, the Kirkus Prize, the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, the Dylan Thomas Prize, and the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award One of Barack Obama's Favorite Books of 2020 A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: NPR, The New York Times Book Review, O Magazine, Vanity Fair, Los Angeles Times, Glamour, Shondaland, Boston Globe, and many more! "So delicious that it feels illicit . . . Raven Leilani’s first novel reads like summer: sentences like ice that crackle or melt into a languorous drip; plot suddenly, wildly flying forward like a bike down a hill." —Jazmine Hughes, The New York Times Book Review No one wants what no one wants. And how do we even know what we want? How do we know we’re ready to take it? Edie is stumbling her way through her twenties—sharing a subpar apartment in Bushwick, clocking in and out of her admin job, making a series of inappropriate sexual choices. She is also haltingly, fitfully giving heat and air to the art that simmers inside her. And then she meets Eric, a digital archivist with a family in New Jersey, including an autopsist wife who has agreed to an open marriage—with rules. As if navigating the constantly shifting landscapes of contemporary sexual manners and racial politics weren’t hard enough, Edie finds herself unemployed and invited into Eric’s home—though not by Eric. She becomes a hesitant ally to his wife and a de facto role model to his adopted daughter. Edie may be the only Black woman young Akila knows. Irresistibly unruly and strikingly beautiful, razor-sharp and slyly comic, sexually charged and utterly absorbing, Raven Leilani’s Luster is a portrait of a young woman trying to make sense of her life—her hunger, her anger—in a tumultuous era. It is also a haunting, aching description of how hard it is to believe in your own talent, and the unexpected influences that bring us into ourselves along the way. “An irreverent intergenerational tale of race and class that’s blisteringly smart and fan-yourself sexy.” —Michelle Hart, O: The Oprah Magazine
