Book Synopsis Losers Like Us by : Daniel Hochhalter
Download or read book Losers Like Us written by Daniel Hochhalter and published by David C Cook. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2008, after seven years of preparation, Daniel Hochhalter permanently failed his PhD, leaving him with no refunds, no transferable credits, no recourse to appeal or try again, and no hope of gaining the qualifications needed for his desired career. Then he lost his job. Devastated and in crisis, with no Plan B and no clue how to redeem his future, he looked to the twelve disciples and discovered that—despite their gaping faults and sins—God still loved them and used them to change the world. With fresh warmth and wisdom, ample hope and humor, Losers Like Us skillfully intertwines Dan’s own story with theirs to show how our worst mistakes and greatest failures bring us to a place of teachableness, egolessness, brokenness, and empathy—the very qualifications required to receive God’s love and grace, and to manifest his kingdom on earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I felt enormous grief from how they treated me. I saw the other side of life: people, evil, strife. A joyful heart is good medicine but the traumatized become ugly as the system spirals down suddenly. They'd project a bad rep on me, act like they owned me, proceed to kill my spirit and take my liberty. Caught in projections without solution I went dead praying God would end it. They had no idea who I was nor could they ever. It was the Dunning-Kruger effect of the unclever. . Cover design by Karen Kellock, Inside art by Blaze Goldburst and Fox Design
Book Synopsis Health, Money, and Love . . . And Why We Don't Enjoy Them by : Robert Farrar Capon
Download or read book Health, Money, and Love . . . And Why We Don't Enjoy Them written by Robert Farrar Capon and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1994-09-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. In this deliciously twisting, engaging, multi- genre narrative, Robert Farrar Capon explores three areas of life that concern us all — health, money, and love — pokes fun of the religions we make of them, and trumpets the radical gospel of grace, the only alternative that can free us to be truly happy. Using a variety of styles — movie script, dialogue, parable, letter, and, of course, his typically sparkling prose — Capon discusses religion and happiness in the light of "holy luck," the notion that God uses chance as his normal device for running the world and establishing his relationship with us. He argues that in espousing false religions such as health, money, and love in our pursuit of happiness, we reject God's holy luck for the illusion of our own control. "Happiness," he asserts, "lies in our ability to accept everything that happens and then either enjoy it gratefully or reconcile it patiently. We may not be able to control all of the things that happen outside us, but since we are in control of both our gratitude and our patience, there is always and in every circumstance a path open to the happiness that God already has over everything." Capon proceeds to explore and interweave the topics of childhood, romance, work, play, exercise and eating habits, aging, and death within his twin themes of religion and happiness. Blending his own experiences with ideas from a wide range of authorities, including Augustine, Dame Julian of Norwich, Meister Eckhart, Chesterton, and Charles Williams, he challenges us to rethink our conception of God, our values, and our entire lives. Full of provocative insights, Health, Money, and Love will surely attract, stir, and delight a wide readership.

Download or read book Born Losers written by Scott A. Sandage and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-30 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes somebody a Loser, a person doomed to unfulfilled dreams and humiliation? Nobody is born to lose, and yet failure embodies our worst fears. The Loser is our national bogeyman, and his history over the past two hundred years reveals the dark side of success, how economic striving reshaped the self and soul of America. From colonial days to the Columbine tragedy, Scott Sandage explores how failure evolved from a business loss into a personality deficit, from a career setback to a gauge of our self-worth. From hundreds of private diaries, family letters, business records, and even early credit reports, Sandage reconstructs the dramas of real-life Willy Lomans. He unearths their confessions and denials, foolish hopes and lost faith, sticking places and changing times. Dreamers, suckers, and nobodies come to life in the major scenes of American history, like the Civil War and the approach of big business, showing how the national quest for success remade the individual ordeal of failure. Born Losers is a pioneering work of American cultural history, which connects everyday attitudes and anxieties about failure to lofty ideals of individualism and salesmanship of self. Sandage's storytelling will resonate with all of us as it brings to life forgotten men and women who wrestled with The Loser--the label and the experience--in the days when American capitalism was building a nation of winners.
Download or read book Humble Calvinism written by J.A. Medders and published by The Good Book Company. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Calvinism in our hearts as well as in our heads. Understanding Calvinism in our hearts as well as in our heads. Calvinism has an image problem. For far too long it has been synonymous with being argumentative, arrogant, and unloving. Somehow the doctrines of grace often haven't made those who believe them actually gracious. Self-confessed recovering, cranky Calvinist, Jeff Medders wonders whether the love of God has been replaced with the love of Calvinism. It's one thing having the "five points" all worked out in your head, but have they really penetrated your heart? His warm-hearted, challenging (and surprisingly witty) book reveals how a true understanding of "the five points" fuels a love of Christ and his people that builds others up, rather than tearing them down. Medders urges readers to be humble and gracious as well as zealous for the truth, to the praise and glory of Christ and his church.
Book Synopsis The Gospel According to a Modern Day Sinner by : Gregg C. Cummings
Download or read book The Gospel According to a Modern Day Sinner written by Gregg C. Cummings and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word gospel means "good news" and is used for terms of truth and of the life and teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. I was moved to write about this because we live in a time when we are vastly becoming immune to the Gospel, or, maybe better put, we are becoming desensitized to constantly hearing the Word while indulging the worldly "feel good" things that are bombarding us on a daily basis. The apostles also lived in a time when they too had their work cut out for them, and the Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John's writings became the very gospels we are speaking of now, as well as David, and maybe as a side not for these gospels, some 2000 years later, this book might help some of you who are in my same situation: believers who are sinners stuck in a world so evil that no society has ever seen it this bad before; believers who are sinners that want nothing more but the strength and power to break away from the very things that are holding us bound to this way of life; believers who are sinners that feel like losers who cannot give up those "feel good" things that have a more physical reality; sinners that are believers through hope and wanting to be on the right side, and yet not wanting to give up luxuries until we really have to, the "just in case" mentality, the selfish self, that is not always in agreeance with our minds' moral standing. I only hope you read this book with an open mind to God. If He shows you that what you read is no good, then so be it, for I am not God. I only know that I am a Sinner that is a Believer that wants to share with you from my understanding of the scriptures and not from my selfish desires. Because I believe that God has been with me, I believe that He has taught me understandings that must be preached and must be written down. If this book does nothing else but allow you to know that you are precious in His sight and that He wants you to come to Him with all your being, then I will be happy.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Criminal Justice Ethics by : Bruce A. Arrigo
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Criminal Justice Ethics written by Bruce A. Arrigo and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 1202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal, state, county, and municipal police forces all have their own codes of conduct, yet the ethics of being a police officer remain perplexing and are often difficult to apply in dynamic situations. The police misconduct statistics are staggering and indicate that excessive use of force comprises almost a quarter of misconduct cases, with sexual harassment, fraud/theft, and false arrest being the next most prevalent factors. The ethical issues and dilemmas in criminal justice also reach deep into the legal professions, the structure and administration of justice in society, and the personal characteristics of those in the criminal justice professions. The Encyclopedia of Criminal Justice Ethics includes A to Z entries by experts in the field that explore the scope of ethical decision making and behaviors within the spheres of criminal justice systems, including policing, corrections, courts, forensic science, and policy analysis and research. This two-volume set is available in both print and electronic formats. Features: Entries are authored and signed by experts in the field and conclude with references and further readings, as well as cross references to related entries that guide readers to the next steps in their research journeys. A Reader's Guide groups related entries by broad topic areas and themes, making it easy for readers to quickly identify related entries. A Chronology highlights the development of the field and places material into historical context; a Glossary defines key terms from the fields of law and ethics; and a Resource Guide provides lists of classic books, academic journals, websites and associations focused on criminal justice ethics. Reports and statistics from such sources as the FBI, the United Nations, and the International Criminal Court are included in an appendix. In the electronic version, the Reader's Guide, index, and cross references combine to provide effective search-and-browse capabilities. The Encyclopedia of Criminal Justice Ethics provides a general, non-technical yet comprehensive resource for students who wish to understand the complexities of criminal justice ethics.
