Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the results of the most recent scholarly investigation into Irish communities on the Continent in the early modern period. Essays deal not only with the activities of military, political and ecclesiastical migrants in Spain and France but also with Irish merchants in the Low Countries, Irish industrial entrepreneurs in Sweden and Irish diplomats in Saxony. Of particular significance are the synthetic essays that set the results of archival research into rigorous interpretative frameworks based on the latest advances in European and Irish historiography. This ground-breaking collection confirms the centrality of migrants and migrant communities in the evolution of early modern Europe and sets a demanding but exciting agenda for future collaborative work in the field.

Book excerpt: Love, Language, Place, and Identity in Popular Culture: Romancing the Other explores the varied representations of Otherness in romance novels and other fiction with strong romantic plots. Contributors’ approaches range from sociolinguistics to cultural studies, and the texts analyzed are set on four continents, with particular emphasis on Caribbean and Atlantic islands. What all the essays have in common is the exploration of representations of the Other, be it in an inter-racial or inter-cultural relationship. Chapters are divided into two parts; the first examines place, travel, history, and language in 20th-century texts; while the second explores tensions and transformations in the depiction of Otherness, mainly in texts published in the early 21st century. This book reveals that even at the end of the 20th century, these texts display neocolonialist attitudes towards the Other. While more recent texts show noticeable changes in attitudes, these changes can often fall short, as stereotypes and prejudices are often still present, just below the surface, in popular novels. The understudied field of popular romance, in which the Other is frequently present as a love interest, proves to be a fruitful area in which to explore the potential and the realities of the treatment of Otherness in popular culture. Scholars of literature, communication, romance, and rhetoric will find this book particularly useful.

Book excerpt: Islands are not just geographical units or physical facts; their importance and significance arise from the human activities associated with them. The maritime routes of sailing ships, the victualling requirements of their sailors, and the strategic demands of seaborne empires in the age of sail - as well as their intrinsic value as sources of rare commodities - meant that islands across the globe played prominent parts in imperial consolidation and expansion. This volume examines the various ways in which islands (and groups of islands) contributed to the establishment, extension, and maintenance of the British Empire in the age of sail. Thematically related chapters explore the geographical, topographical, economic, and social diversity of the islands that comprised a large component of the British Empire in an era of rapid and significant expansion. Although many of these islands were isolated rocky outcrops, they acted as crucial nodal points, providing critical assistance for ships and men embarked on the long-distance voyages that characterised British overseas activities in the period. Intercontinental maritime trade, colonial settlement, and scientific exploration and experimentation would have been impossible without these oceanic islands. They also acted as sites of strategic competition, contestation, and conflict for rival European powers keen to outstrip each other in developing and maintaining overseas markets, plantations, and settlements. The importance of islands outstripped their physical size, the populations they sustained, or their individual economic contribution to the imperial balance sheet. Standing at the centre of maritime routes of global connectivity, islands offer historians of the British Empire fresh perspectives on the intercontinental communication, commercial connections, and territorial expansion that characterised that empire.

Book excerpt: The English Language and Anglo-American Culture: Its Impact on Spanish Language and Society explores the effects of globalisation on Spanish language and society. It analyses the impact of the English language and Anglo-American culture on Spanish language and culture. This book compiles four different studies that provide evidence of the increasingly pervasive presence of English in Spanish daily life. The areas covered include: analyses of shop windows from different shopping centres in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, which display Christmas greetings in English, rather than Spanish; exploration of some of the most frequently used techniques to translate the titles of Anglo-American films; a study of the use of anglicisms in the Spanish edition of the film magazine Cahiers du Cinema; research on the attitudes of a sample of Spanish students towards English; reflection on the emergence of a certain sense of identity towards English and Anglo-American culture among Spaniards; and some activities that invite reflection on the issues dealt with throughout the book.

Book excerpt: This volume represents a uniquely comprehensive overview of our current knowledge on tropical montane cloud forests. 72 chapters cover a wide spectrum of topics including cloud forest distribution, climate, soils, biodiversity, hydrological processes, hydrochemistry and water quality, climate change impacts, and cloud forest conservation, management, and restoration. The final chapter presents a major synthesis by some of the world's leading cloud forest researchers, which summarizes our current knowledge and considers the sustainability of these forests in an ever-changing world. This book presents state-of-the-art knowledge concerning cloud forest occurrence and status, as well as the biological and hydrological value of these unique forests. The presentation is academic but with a firm practical emphasis. It will serve as a core reference for academic researchers and students of environmental science and ecology, as well as practitioners (natural resources management, forest conservation) and decision makers at local, national, and international levels.

Explore contemporary trends and new directions in the field. Papers focusing on historical linguistics include Bohmann et al's study on the passive alternation in 19th and 20th century American English whilst Iyeiri and Fukunaga investigate negation in 19th century American missionary documents. Bohmann's emphasis is on the Contrastive usage profiling method to represent online discourse data. Empirical studies on discourse analysis include Brooks' analysis of how the UK press portrays obesity, Coats generating ASR transcripts to look at dialect data from YouTube, and Gonzalez-Cruz's pragmatic considerations of Anglicisms entering Canarian-Spanish digital headlines. Schneider use statistical models to look at language comprehension in an eye-tracking corpus.
