Book Synopsis The Hole of the Pit by : Adrian Ross
Download or read book The Hole of the Pit written by Adrian Ross and published by The Oleander Press. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CLASSIC EARLY HORROR IN THE STYLE OF MR JAMES BY A FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE "The haunted house story becomes a real nerve-shredder..." 'Adrian Ross' was a great name to conjure with in the early years of the 20th century. A founding father of 'musical comedy', this celebrated librettist wrote over two thousand lyrics and worked on around sixty popular musicals, including the hugely successful English versions of The Merry Widow and Lilac Time. In his completely different earlier life, under his own name of Arthur R. Ropes, he was a multi-talented Cambridge don, a Senior Fellow at King's College during the 1880s, alongside M.R. James. He composed two impressive works of supernatural horror fiction - both narrated by Cambridge scholars - which appear here together in one volume for the first time. Ross and James were among the first writers of the late nineteenth century who moved away from the familiar traditional Victorian ghosts to the much stranger world of centuries-old demons, all extremely dangerous and horrifying, defying any clear description. For example, the traditional haunted house tale takes a hideous descent into grave terror here. While the Collected Ghost Stories of M.R. James have been widely available for decades, it is now time for the collected horror fiction of 'Adrian Ross' to be available for the present 21st century generation. Download or read book Diaboliad written by Mikhail Bulgakov and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Bulgakov’s strong point was his ability to amplify the roots of man’s dementia, the howls of political pandemonium . . . a lively collection.” —The Washington Post Book World Mikhail Bulgakov’s Diaboliad and Other Stories, comprised of Diaboliad, No. 13–The Elpit Workers’ Commune, A Chinese Tale, and The Adventures of Chichikov, serves as an excellent introduction to this renowned Russian satirist and playwright’s work. Black comedy, biting social and political commentary, and Bulgakov’s unique narrative exuberance combine to tell the tales of labyrinthine post-Revolution bureaucracy; clashes between science, the intellectual class, and the state; and the high price to be paid for the promised utopian world of Communism in early Soviet Russia. Bulgakov’s signature eloquent skewering of the various shortcomings of the world around and within him can be found on every page, and horror and magic interweave in a constant dance of the absurd—a dance that would reach its highest point both stylistically and thematically in Bulgakov’s tour de force novel The Master and Margarita. “One of the most original voices of the twentieth century.” —The Guardian, UK
Book Synopsis The Amazonian Languages by : R. M. W. Dixon
Download or read book The Amazonian Languages written by R. M. W. Dixon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-09-23 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Amazon Basin is arguably both one of the least-known and the most complex linguistic regions in the world. It is the home of some 300 languages belonging to around twenty language families, plus more than a dozen genetic isolates, and many of these languages (often incompletely documented and mostly endangered) show properties that constitute exceptions to received ideas about linguistic universals. This book provides an overview in a single volume of this rich and exciting linguistic area. The editors and contributors have sought to make their descriptions as clear and accessible as possible, in order to provide a basis for further research on the structural characteristics of Amazonian languages and their genetic and areal relationships, as well as a point of entry to important cross-linguistic data for the wider constituency of theoretical linguists.
Book Synopsis Writing Across Cultures by : Angel Rama
Download or read book Writing Across Cultures written by Angel Rama and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-29 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ángel Rama was one of twentieth-century Latin America's most distinguished men of letters. Writing across Cultures is his comprehensive analysis of the varied sources of Latin American literature. Originally published in 1982, the book links Rama's work on Spanish American modernism with his arguments about the innovative nature of regionalist literature, and it foregrounds his thinking about the close relationship between literary movements, such as modernism or regionalism, and global trends in social and economic development. In Writing across Cultures, Rama extends the Cuban anthropologist Fernando Ortiz's theory of transculturation far beyond Cuba, bringing it to bear on regional cultures across Latin America, where new cultural arrangements have been forming among indigenous, African, and European societies for the better part of five centuries. Rama applies this concept to the work of the Peruvian novelist, poet, and anthropologist José María Arguedas, whose writing drew on both Spanish and Quechua, Peru's two major languages and, by extension, cultures. Rama considered Arguedas's novel Los ríos profundos (Deep Rivers) to be the most accomplished example of narrative transculturation in Latin America. Writing across Cultures is the second of Rama's books to be translated into English.
