Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to examine multicultural visual art in Germany, discussing more than thirty contemporary artists and arguing for a cosmopolitan Germanness. With Turks, Jews, and Other Germans in Contemporary Art, Peter Chametzky presents a view of visual culture in Germany that leaves behind the usual suspects--those artists who dominate discussions of contemporary German art, including Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, and Rosemarie Trockel--and instead turns to those artists not as well known outside Germany, including Maziar Moradi, Hito Steyerl, and Tanya Ury. In this first book-length examination of Germany's multicultural art scene, Chametzky explores the work of more than thirty German artists who are (among other ethnicities) Turkish, Jewish, Arab, Asian, Iranian, Sinti and Roma, Balkan, and Afro-German. With a title that echoes Peter Gay's 1978 collection of essays, Freud, Jews and Other Germans, this book, like Gay's, rejects the idea of "us" and "them" in German culture. Discussing artworks in a variety of media that both critique and expand notions of identity and community, Chametzky offers a counternarrative to the fiction of an exclusively white, Christian German culture, arguing for a cosmopolitan Germanness. He considers works that deploy critical, confrontational, and playful uses of language, especially German and Turkish; that assert the presence of "foreign bodies" among the German body politic; that grapple with food as a cultural marker; that engage with mass media; and that depict and inhabit spaces imbued with the element of time. American discussions of German contemporary art have largely ignored the emergence of non-ethnic Germans as some of Germany's most important visual artists. Turks, Jews, and Other Germans in Contemporary Art fills this gap.

Book excerpt: "In the last ten years, Loredana Nemes has intensively engaged with the subjects of identity and personality. In the process, deeply personal and political issues flow into her work. The most comprehensive monograph on her oeuvre to date, which is being published in conjunction with a large solo exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie, presents four large series. In two of them she explores primal human emotions such as "fear" and "greed," and works for the first time with the power of color. Her older series "beyond" and "Blossom Time" add to the conceptual approach of the new works the aspects of society and individuality by analyzing the possibilities of portraying. Despite her very clear, conceptual approach, all of Nemes's images have a secretive, mysterious component that lends the works a great depth and allows the viewer to develop an emotional, personal connection to them."--Artist's website.

Book excerpt: With its scenic beauty and myth-enshrouded past, the Rhine has always been a popular subject in art and literature. One of the longest rivers in Europe, it inspired the masters of medieval panel painting as well as the Romanticists and the representatives of the classic modern era and contemporary art. Between 2012 and 2014, the photographer Michael Lange devoted his attention to the waters of the Upper Rhine.

Book excerpt: Michael Dressel's street photography relies on his long practiced ability to anticipate events that are about to happen and the readiness to capture these moments. In Lost Angeles, the viewer is invited to view some of Dressel's most poignant portraits and to be transported to that moment and place. Dressel professes to loving Los Angeles "warts and all" and is clearly comfortable moving through the city's streets, angling for those "magical" moments and showing us things that most would rather look away from. Mr. Dressel was born in East Berlin and spent 2 years in a Stasi prison after being captured while climbing the Berlin wall. He moved from Berlin to Los Angeles in 1986 and has spent the past 35 years taking photos while making a living as a movie sound editor. Lost Angeles features an interview with F. Scott Hess, artist and associate professor at Laguna college of Art along with an afterword by Matthias Harder, the director of the Helmut Newton Foundation, Berlin. The black & white photographs collected for Lost Angeles were taken between 2014 - 2020. "I do believe in magic. The magic that happens when I am pointing a camera at life and freeze a few hundredths of a second into an image. Afterwards that image turns into this thing that communicates what I think and feel about the world This magic allows me to photograph myself into the world." - Michael Dressel

Book excerpt: In this book, the authors explore and discuss the development of one of the most interesting and dynamic of photographic genres. Hailed as a landmark work when it was first published in 1994, Bystander is widely regarded by street photographers as the "bible" of street photography. It covers an incredible array of talent, from the unknowns of the late 19th century to the acknowledged masters of the 20th, such as Atget, Stieglitz, Strand, Cartier-Bresson, Brassai, Kertesz, Frank, Arbus, Winogrand, and Levitt to name just a few. In this new and fully revised edition, the story of street photography is brought up to date with a re-evaluation of some historical material, the inclusion of more contemporary photographers, and a discussion of the ongoing rise of digital photography.

Book excerpt: Leon of Juda is the seventh book in Robert Frank's (born 1924) acclaimed series of visual diaries, which combine iconic photos from throughout his career with the more personal pictures he makes today. Here, still lifes taken in Frank's home in Bleecker Street, New York, and landscapes around his house in Mabou, Nova Scotia, jostle alongside spontaneous portraits of friends, colleagues and his wife, the artist June Leaf, as well as vintage postcards. With these images Frank creates a seemingly casual layout that recalls the look and spirit of a private album or scrapbook. Equally humble and ambitious, Leon of Juda shows how the past tempers Frank's present and how his life is not only documented in, but shaped by, bookmaking.

Book excerpt: The Berlin-based Finnish artist Ola Kolehmainen composes his photographs according to strict principles of order, showing rows of repetitive basic patterns of symmetrical constructs. Generally featuring sections of facades, the Minimalist austerity of these images is occasionally broken by elements, such as trees or other buildings mirrored in the facades, that circumvent this formalism. Kolehmainen's works are produced using the Diasec process, which means that the environment is reflected on the surface of the photos as well as in the images themselves - a calculated component of his work.

Book excerpt: The title can only be meant ironically as photographer Paul Kranzler tells the story of his elderly neighbors, Toni and Aloisia, living out their days in their one-room subsidized apartment. The deeply empathetic photos document the subjects' bewilderment at slipping out of the middle class due to forces beyond their control. "The main challenge of Kranzler's photographs is [his] determination to keep nothing at arm's length," writes an admiring critic of the young Linz-based artist, who tries to make himself a participant rather than clinical observer of the lives he shoots. Kranzler is a true 21st-century heir to the great Social Realist photographers of the past.

Book excerpt: "Museum of Chance is the first publication of Museum Bhavan, which is a collection of museums made by Dayanita Singh in New Delhi. The museums hoiuse old and new images made by the artist. Each wooden structure can be placed and opened in different ways, and holds around a hundred framed images, some on view, while others wait for their turn in the reserve collection, also kept inside the structures. As Singh keeps adding images to the museums, the museums themselves give birth to other museums. For example, the Museum of Embraces comes out of the Museum of Chance, and the Museum of Vitrines is contained within the Museum of Furniture. This publication is a mass produced artist book for the museum by the same name. Each image in the book is a cover image on one of the books."--Colophon.
