Book excerpt: Lorac didn’t set out to be the voice of the ocean, but when the future is at stake, being a hero is the only choice. Lorac, the youngest of a family of sea nomads, suffers a series of unfortunate events and has to seek refuge in the heart of the sea. The transition isn’t easy, and unexpected difficulties arise. But helped by his new friend Zoe, Lorac joins a family of centenarian creatures and discovers the secrets of the coral reef―his real home. A threat that affects the marine world, however, makes him depart to the place he once knew and now knows no more, in a daring mission to save the ocean―and the planet. Lorac will have to make difficult decisions, live in worlds where he doesn’t belong, and prove his worth for the good of all. Science and fantasy come together in an adventure of hope and courage that transmits an important message to protect our environment. ~~~~~~ Recommended for adults and teens 12+ as it deals with the value of family and friendship, death, growing up, and global Earth issues. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muriel Farrington is a domineering woman who, unfortunately for them, has her entire family living with her in her stately home. She tries, often successfully, to run the lives of her children, her stepchildren, her in-laws, and her husband, and she seems to be despised by all except her husband and one son. When she is found dead one morning in her bed, the family doctor, who is old, ill, and hasn’t been very able for years, is unable to attend and bestow a certificate, which he would have done without investigation or thought. A younger, more able and perceptive doctor has to be called in, to the shock of whoever the murderer was, and he does not find the death natural. A hypodermic puncture in her arm leads him to believe, correctly as it turns out, that someone has injected insulin into the woman. Since she was not suffering from diabetes, death was the inevitable result.

Book excerpt: Mystery crime fiction written in the Golden Age of Murder "A terrifically atmospheric puzzler...the ending is a stunner...like the best Golden Age crime fiction." —Booklist STARRED review '"A man who played about on the fringes of the Black Market, who had fought for Sinn Fein, who lived by his wits—and who finally became dangerous to somebody and was knocked over the head in the blackout. It may prove to be a sordid story, but I certainly find it an interesting one."' London, 1945. The capital is shrouded in the darkness of the blackout, and mystery abounds in the parks after dusk. During a stroll through Regent's Park, Bruce Mallaig witnesses two men acting suspiciously around a footbridge. In a matter of moments, one of them has been murdered; Mallaig's view of the assailant but a brief glimpse of a ghastly face in the glow of a struck match. The murderer's noiseless approach and escape seems to defy all logic, and even the victim's identity is quickly thrown into uncertainty. Lorac's shrewd yet personable C.I.D. man MacDonald must set to work once again to unravel this near-impossible mystery.

Just then he gets a letter from Lancastrian farmer Giles Hoggett about some odd goings on recently in Lunesdale. Normally he'd pass on the letter to some subordinate, but the possibility that Giles's suspicions might link to the Ginner investigation are just too tantalizing to leave alone, so off to Lancashire goes Chief Inspector Macdonald... soon to discover the murdered body of Gordon Ginner!

Book excerpt: Discover the captivating treasures buried in the British Library's archives. Largely inaccessible to the public until now, these enduring classics were written in the golden age of detective fiction. "...this crime is conditioned by the place. To understand the one you've got to study the other." The Garths had farmed their fertile acres for generations, and fine land it was with the towering hills of the Lake Country on the far horizon. Here hot-tempered Robert Garth, still hale and hearty at eighty-two, ruled Garthmere Hall with a rod of iron. Until, that is, old Garth was found dead—'dead as mutton'—in the trampled mud of the ancient outhouse. Glowering clouds gather over the dramatic dales and fells as seasoned investigator Chief Inspector Macdonald arrives in the north country. Awaiting him are the reticent Garths and their guarded neighbors of the Lune Valley; and a battle of wits to unearth their murderous secrets. E.C.R Lorac was a prolific writer who penned over forty bestselling mystery books over the course of her career. First published in 1944, Fell Murder is a tightly-paced mystery with authentic depictions of its breathtaking locales and Second World War setting. Rife with detail and suspenseful historical crime, this novel earns its place among the classic British mysteries. This edition also includes the rare E.C.R. Lorac short story 'The Live Wire'. Other books in the British Library Crime Classics: Death in Fancy Dress The Body in the Dumb River It Walks by Night Measure of Malice Surfeit of Suspects Death Has Deep Roots The Notting Hill Mystery

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wulfstane Manor, a rambling old country house with many unused rooms, winding staircases and a maze of cellars, had been bequeathed to Veronica Mallowood and her brother Martin. The last time the large family of Mallowoods had all foregathered under the ancestral roof was on the occasion of their father’s funeral, and there had been one of those unholy rows which not infrequently follow the reading of a will. That was some years ago, and as Veronica found it increasingly difficult to go on paying for the upkeep of Wulfstane, she summoned another family conference - a conference in which Death took a hand. Rope’s End, Rogue’s End is, of course, an Inspector MacDonald case, in which that popular detective plays a brilliant part.

For her entire life, her mother has kept them running from whatever lurks inside it. But Redd's had enough of not knowing who she is. So when the box shows up where only she can find it, she opens it...and awakens a link to the evil her mother fought to keep dormant. John lives in an old-fashioned village, a place of exquisite beauty and abundance. But such splendor demands that the villagers commit unspeakable acts. When the link with Redd is unlocked, the village council believes they have a solution to simplify their darkest task. John is sent to find the one girl who could possibly save them...if she makes the ultimate sacrifice. Eleanor sets off from England to America in 1587, pregnant and desperate to leave her ties with the devil behind. But when the captain of the ship refuses to take her and the other settlers further than Roanoke Island, what should be the beginning of a better life turns into a horrendous struggle to survive. Eleanor's desire to see her daughter live at any cost will curse her and everyone around her for centuries to come... Redd, John, and Eleanor's stories meld together in a mashup of dark, urban, and historical fantasy, delving into the nuances of good and evil, the price of loyalty, and the extremes we will go to for those we love.

Eichons and drones serve and manage. It is two centuries since the Arcpelago voted to go anarch. Everyone hoped it would mean more freedom, a Utopia. But no, they just got bored. Tibar attends a meeting where new discoveries about the energy of dimensions (surplicity) are presented. She and a small group investigate and find new challenges and new ways to remake society. One group forms a haven using only limited technology. They call themselves The Naturals. No enhancements, no body shifting a natural lifespan. They believe living as an animal is the only way to give purpose to life. Tibar's partner joins the group. An old spaceship returns from a distant star. What are the strange pods in the seas of a distant moon? Are they alive? Slowly it makes sense, but is it just another layer? Is it enough truth?

Book excerpt: NAVOCEANO conducted two oceanographic surveys in the ocean area off Point Arguello, California, one in January and one in November-December 1964. The primary purpose of the surveys was to investigate the currents of the area; however, standard Nansen casts were taken, and bottom sediment and plankton samples were obtained. Parachute current drogues were principally used to describe current movement off Point Arguello. A strong westerly flow along the northern portion of Santa Barbara Channel was noted in the surface layers. A corresponding easterly flowing current also was noted in the southern portion of the channel. The major features of the surface flow appeared to be a counterclockwise rotating eddy just off Point Arguello and a deflection of the California Current due to the influence of Rodriquez Dome.
