Book excerpt: Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) is a subtropical evergreen fruit tree indigenous to China. Records show it has been cultivated in China for over 2000 years. From this beginning, loquat has spread to more than 30 countries around the world. Grown in various regions of Asia, the Mediterranean and across the Americas, loquats suit both temperate and subtropical areas, sharing the same environmental conditions as citrus. Loquat is an increasingly commercial crop in some Asian and European countries with a good amount of international trade. This book is to be the first to provide a comprehensive coverage of the history, physiology, culture and marketing of loquat throughout the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Loquat Loquats do well wherever the production of lemons is successful. They blossom and set fruit from October to February and, while the blossoms are fairly resistant to cold, the developing fruit is liable to be injured by temperatures much below 30° F. The loquat tree is not particular as to soil requirements. Although poor soils and a scanty supply of water will produce an abundant crop, and the individual fruits may be of good flavor and quality, they are almost invariably small. Since size is an important factor in a commercial fruit, the fertilization and irrigation of the soil will have to be regulated so as to produce fruit equal to the market demand. The loquat tree is very prolific and liable to overbear. A common practice in some sections is to crowd the trees into rows twenty-four feet apart, with the trees twelve feet apart-in the row. This helps to dwarf the tree and to produce more uniform and regular crops. Some of the best varieties have been developed in California. The best var'iety for an early market is the Early Red, which often ripens in February. The best mid-season varieties are the Champagne, Thales, Advance, and Victor. Book excerpt: Southeastern China is home to the fruit-bearing loquat tree, scientifically known as Eriobotrya japonica. Along with strawberries, peaches, and apples, it is a member of the Rosaceae family. You could hear this fruit called a Chinese plum or a Japanese plum. Loquats are little fruits that can be either round or pear-shaped and can be any shade of yellow or orange. They taste like a combination of apricot, peach, and citrus, with a touch of sweetness and slight acidity. The fruit has a middle seed and a thin, edible skin, making it texture-wise comparable to plums and peaches. You should remove the huge seeds before eating them. Fresh loquats are delicious on their own, but they also add a lot of flavor to salads and other dishes. You can also use them in sweets, jams, and jellies. Loquats are a delicious and healthy addition to any diet because they are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Because of its lovely evergreen leaves, this tree is frequently grown as an ornamental in landscapes and gardens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Hale writes about being a missionary surgeon in the same delightful way James Herriot writes about being a country veterinarian. Dr. Hale's incredible experience in tiny, mountainous Nepal are surpassed only by his talent for telling about them. Imagine, for example, the culture shock of moving to a Hindu country under such rigid religious control that it is not only illegal to proselytize, but illegal to change religions as well. Imagine further the shock of moving to that country as a missionary doctor. Thomas Hale and his wife, Cynthia, also a physician, too on that awesome challenge in 1970.God wasted no time teaching tom the peculiarities of his new culture. But His unusual method left Tom wondering what God was up to. Here is how Tom tells about it:"These were not the phlegmatic, easy-going Nepalis described in books and orientation courses. Those who spoke gesticulated fiercely. Some looked around menacingly; others spat. One thing was certain, however: in the cause of their anger they were united. The word was out: the new doctor had killed a cow. My own sense of participation in the proceedings was intense. I was the new doctor."--ExcerptAs Tom goes on to describe the events the preceded the angry scene in the Nepali village, the image of the spiritually superior missionary quickly evaporates. In a humorous, yet deeply insightful way, the author makes it clear that he is merely a servant, using his skills to the glory of God.Tom concludes this chapter with a thoughtful confession:"In the long run, that cow did much more for me that I did for it. The mild-mannered, uncritical beast made me see in myself those negative attributes I had always ascribed to other American surgeons. Facing two hundred angry men proved to be effective therapy for removing most traces of condescension with which I previously regarded them. It also improved my relations with missionary colleagues and with Nepali brothers and sisters in the church. I guess God had no gentler way of removing some of my imperfections. I only wish I could say, for His trouble, that He finished the job. But it was a start." -- Excerpt.Dr. Hale's book refused to be preachy or condescending. It presents missions as a "want" rather than an "ought." It is sensitive, warm, honest, incredibly funny, and filled with important truths illustrated from unusual and sometimes unimaginable situations.

Book excerpt: "The landlocked nation of Nepal is tucked into the Himalayan Mountains between India and China (Tibet). Possessed of a varied landscape and such treasures as Mount Everest, the Nepalese are proud of their time-worn temples, sublime scenery, hiking trails, and a rich and vibrant culture. The cuisine is surprisingly diverse for such a small country, with influences from Chinese and Indian culinary methods and tastes. One of the very few Nepali cookbooks on the market, Taste of Nepal is a thorough and comprehensive guide to this cuisine, featuring more than 350 authentic recipes, a section on well-known Nepali herbs and spices, menu planning, Nepalese kitchen equipment, and delightful illustrations. Instructions are clearly detailed and most ingredients are readily available in the United States. Complete with illustrations. There is something for everyone in this book. For the most timid cook--Fried Rice (Baasi-Bhaat Bhutuwa) or Stir-Fried Chicken (Kukhura Taareko) are easily achievable. The adventurous home chef will be tempted to try Goat Curry (Khasi-Boka ko Maasu) and Sun-Dried Fish with Tomato Chutney (Golbheda ra Sidra Maacha)." -- Amazon.com viewed August 31, 2020.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutritional Composition of Fruit Cultivars provides readers with the latest information on the health related properties of foods, making the documentation of the nutritive value of historical cultivars especially urgent, especially before they are lost and can't be effectively compared to modern cultivars. Because there is considerable diversity and a substantial body of the compositional studies directed towards commercial varieties, this information is useful for identifying traits and features that may be transposed from one variety to another. In addition, compositional and sensory features may also be used for commercialization and to characterize adulteration. Detailed characterization of cultivars can be used to identify "super-foods". Alternatively, unmasked historical cultivars may be the focus of reinvigorated commercial practices. Each chapter in this book has sections on the botanical aspects, the composition of traditional or ancient cultivars, the composition of modern cultivars, a focus on areas of research, the specialty of the communicating author of each chapter, and summary points. Presents the botanical aspects and composition of both traditional and modern plants, including in-depth insight into current research, and overall summary points for each fruit for consistent comparison and ease of reference Provides important information in the consideration of preservation, transference, or re-introduction of historical/traditional cultivars into current crop science Provides details on compositional and sensory parameters, from aroma and taste to micro- and macronutrients Includes data on nutraceuticals and novel components that have proven to impact on, or be important in, food quality, storage, processing, storage, and marketing
