Book excerpt: This highly acclaimed work, first published by Prentice Hall in 1989, is a comprehensive and theoretically sound treatment of parallel and distributed numerical methods. It focuses on algorithms that are naturally suited for massive parallelization, and it explores the fundamental convergence, rate of convergence, communication, and synchronization issues associated with such algorithms. This is an extensive book, which aside from its focus on parallel and distributed algorithms, contains a wealth of material on a broad variety of computation and optimization topics. It is an excellent supplement to several of our other books, including Convex Optimization Algorithms (Athena Scientific, 2015), Nonlinear Programming (Athena Scientific, 1999), Dynamic Programming and Optimal Control (Athena Scientific, 2012), Neuro-Dynamic Programming (Athena Scientific, 1996), and Network Optimization (Athena Scientific, 1998). The on-line edition of the book contains a 95-page solutions manual.

Book excerpt: This volume is a compendium of papers presented during an Advanced Seminar on Air Traffic Control (ATC) that took place in Capri, Italy on October 28-31, 1991. The Seminar was' organized by the Progetto Finalizzato Trasporti of the Italian National Research Council. The papers presented in the Seminar dealt with a wide range of topics which are currently important in ATC. For example, there were papers on such subjects as recent developments in primary and secondary radar technologies, communications networks and protocols, and the future uses of satellite-based communications, navigation and surveillance in ATC. However, all the papers contained in the volume were selected exclusively from that set of papers that addressed some aspect of the main area of emphasis in the Seminar, namely massive data-processing requirements and computer intensive problems in ATC. Data-processing requirements in A TC have grown enormously over the years. Obviously, the rapid increase in air traffic volumes in most of the world is one of the factors that has contributed to this growth. However, two other developments have contributed much more significantly: first, the ATC system now collects (mostly automatically) immensely more "information per flight" than in the past; and, second, as the system's complexity increases and as it becomes more tightly interconnected geographically, so grows the need to communicate, process and "filter" the data presented to the system's various components.

Book excerpt: This textbook introduces methods of accelerating transient stability (dynamic) simulation and electromagnetic transient simulation on massively parallel processors for large-scale AC-DC grids – two of the most common and computationally onerous studies done by energy control centers and research laboratories for the planning, design, and operation of such integrated grids for ensuring the security and reliability of electric power. Simulation case studies provided in the book range from small didactic test circuits to realistic-sized AC-DC grids, and special emphasis is placed on detailed device-level multi-physics models for power system equipment and decomposition techniques for simulating large-scale systems. Parallel Dynamic and Transient Simulation of Large-Scale Power Systems: A High Performance Computing Solution is a comprehensive state-of-the-art guide for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in power systems engineering. Practicing engineers, software developers, and scientists working in the power and energy industry will find it to be a timely and valuable reference for solving potential problems in their design and development activities. Detailed device-level electro-thermal modeling for power electronic systems in DC grids; Provides comprehensive dynamic and transient simulation of integrated large-scale AC-DC grids; Offers detailed models of renewable energy system models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awareness of the need and potential of supercomputers for scientific and engineering research has grown tremendously in the past few years. It has culminated in the Super computer Initiative undertaken two years aga by the National Science Foundation and presently under full development in the United States. Similar initiatives are under way in several European countries and in Japan too. Thus the organization of a symposium on 'Supercomputer Simulations in Chemistry' appeared timely, and such a meeting was held in Montreal (Canada) in August 1985, sponsored by IBM-Kingston and IBM-Canada, and organized by Dr. Enrico Clementi and Dr. Michel Dupuis. In connection with this, IBM's support of the Cornell University Supercomputer Center, several projects in the IBM Research Division, the experimental parallel engine (ICAP) assembled at IBM-Kingston, and the announcement (Fall 1985) of an add-on vector feature to the 3090 IBM mainframe underscore IBM's commitment to high-end scientific/engineering computing. The papers presented in this volume discuss topics in quantum mechanical and statis tical mechanical simulations, both of which test the limits of computer hardware and soft ware. Already a great deal of effort has been put into using vector supercomputers in these two areae. Much more is needed and, without doubt, ie bound to happen. To start, an historical perspective of computational quantum chemistry is provided by Professor Löwdin. The contribution by Ohno and co-workers gives an indication of the present status of Japanese supercomputers. Kutzelnigg et al. , Bauschlicher et al. , and Guest et al.

Book excerpt: Computer organization and architecture is becoming an increasingly important core subject in the areas of computer science and its applications, and information technology constantly steers the relentless revolution going on in this discipline. This textbook demystifies the state of the art using a simple and step-by-step development from traditional fundamentals to the most advanced concepts entwined with this subject, maintaining a reasonable balance among various theoretical principles, numerous design approaches, and their actual practical implementations. Being driven by the diversified knowledge gained directly from working in the constantly changing environment of the information technology (IT) industry, the author sets the stage by describing the modern issues in different areas of this subject. He then continues to effectively provide a comprehensive source of material with exciting new developments using a wealth of concrete examples related to recent regulatory changes in the modern design and architecture of different categories of computer systems associated with real-life instances as case studies, ranging from micro to mini, supermini, mainframes, cluster architectures, massively parallel processing (MPP) systems, and even supercomputers with commodity processors. Many of the topics that are briefly discussed in this book to conserve space for new materials are elaborately described from the design perspective to their ultimate practical implementations with representative schematic diagrams available on the book’s website. Book excerpt: The demand for more computing power has been a constant trend in many fields of science, engineering and business. Now more than ever, the need for more and more processing power is emerging in the resolution of complex problems from life sciences, financial services, drug discovery, weather forecasting, massive data processing for e-science, e-commerce and e-government etc. Grid and P2P paradigms are based on the premise to deliver greater computing power at less cost, thus enabling the solution of such complex problems. Parallel Programming, Models and Applications in Grid and P2P Systems presents recent advances for grid and P2P paradigms, middleware, programming models, communication libraries, as well as their application to the resolution of real-life problems. By approaching grid and P2P paradigms in an integrated and comprehensive way, we believe that this book will serve as a reference for researchers and developers of the grid and P2P computing communities. Important features of the book include an up-to-date survey of grid and P2P programming models, middleware and communication libraries, new approaches for modeling and performance analysis in grid and P2P systems, novel grid and P2P middleware as well as grid and P2P-enabled applications for real-life problems. Academics, scientists, software developers and engineers interested in the grid and P2P paradigms will find the comprehensive coverage of this book useful for their academic, research and development activity.

Book excerpt: Computational properties of use to biological organisms or to the construction of computers can emerge as collective properties of systems having a large number of simple equivalent components (or neurons). The physical meaning of content-addressable memory is described by an appropriate phase space flow of the state of a system. A model of such a system is given, based on aspects of neurobiology but readily adapted to integrated circuits. The collective properties of this model produce a content-addressable memory which correctly yields an entire memory from any subpart of sufficient size. The algorithm for the time evolution of the state of the system is based on asynchronous parallel processing. Additional emergent collective properties include some capacity for generalization, familiarity recognition, categorization, error correction, and time sequence retention. The collective properties are only weakly sensitive to details of the modeling or the failure of individual devices.
