It is the home of the great white wolf and a place of worship for the Indians that reside near there. Mike finds William, and they discover the coins in a room among the skeletons of the robbers who became trapped there many years before. Roscoe, the librarian, appears as the one who wants the treasure for himself. The shaman and wolf arrive on the scene. They tell Roscoe the gold is cursed and cannot leave the cave, but Roscoe doesn't care. Can he be stopped from claiming the treasure? What will happen to Mike and William?

It has passed through war, famine (during the siege of '63, when-Gen. Thomas' men tightened up their belts a hole each day, and mules lived, or died rather, upon a sparse diet of fence rails and wagon tongues) flood and fire, and still lives and flourishes as perhaps no other city in the South does - enterprise and vim will win. By the way, the Indian name of the city does not mean "Eagle's Nest," or "Hawk's Nest," as certain veracious newspaper correspondents would have it. Those who have given the subject attention say it was originally the name of a small Indian village, situated on the bank of a creek of the same name, near the base of Lookout Mountain. The word means, in the Cherokee dialect, "to draw a fish out of water," and hence the name was given to the village of Indian fishermen. It was then very appropriate, but, when given to the town built by white men lost its meaning - although it is unique and musical, as most Indian names are. Whitaker's green troops fought bravely that afternoon and by the end of the battle, no one doubted that they earned the name "Iron Brigade of Chickamauga." The story explodes when both are wounded. The novel, through John's memoirs, tells the story of how the Federal wounded soldiers of Chickamauga traveled from the battlefield in Georgia to the hospitals in Nashville, Tennessee. John told in his own words, the pain and suffering that he and others endured during the week they traveled, many on foot, to Nashville after the battle. Four days after walking over sixty miles to Bridgeport he wrote, "Finally the train was loaded and we started and oh, the jar of that old box car was so great, I had to sit squatted down on my toeslike, and then the pain was so great in my arm that the tears would run from my eyes." The novel also tells the fate of the slightly wounded. These soldiers stayed with their regiments for a week or more before they received proper treatment, which by then, for many was too late. Exemplary of the state of their medical care are Charles E. Belknap's remarks: "In the confusion of the retreat, primary operations could not be performed to the extent desired; thus, many cases of injuries of the knee and ankle joints subsequently proved fatal that might have been saved by timely amputations."
