Book Synopsis A Comparative Study of Four English Translations of Sûrat Ad-Dukhân on the Semantic Level by : Saudi Sadiq
Download or read book A Comparative Study of Four English Translations of Sûrat Ad-Dukhân on the Semantic Level written by Saudi Sadiq and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through combining a knowledge of translation theory and application, the present book aims at holding a semantic comparison of four English translations attempted by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall, ‘Abdullâh Yûsuf ‘Alî, Arthur J. Arberry and Muhammad Mahmûd Ghâlî of Sûrat Ad-Dukhân (the Chapter of Smoke). As a theoretical framework, the book deals with several linguistic and cultural problems of translation, with special reference to Qur'ân translation, and the principles that should be considered on translating the Qur'ân. The core of the book is a comparison of sixty-eight lexical, syntactic and stylistic selections from Sûrat Ad-Dukhân. The comparison depends on various Qur’ân interpretations and Arabic dictionaries to decide the precise meaning(s) of the selections. Then, a translation is suggested, and the four translations are judged: the correct ones are acknowledged and the mistaken shown, along with the reasons underlying the mistake(s). To reach the precise meaning in English and judge the translations compared accurately, many English dictionaries are utilized. The comparison shows that the best translation in terms of meaning precision and easiness of expression is that of Ghâlî, followed by Pickthall's, Arberry’s and ‘Alî’s respectively.

Book Synopsis Ab Initio Language Teaching in British Higher Education by : Ulrike Bavendiek
Download or read book Ab Initio Language Teaching in British Higher Education written by Ulrike Bavendiek and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing extensively on the expertise of teachers of German in universities across the UK, this volume offers an overview of recent trends, new pedagogical approaches and practical guidance for teaching at beginners level in the higher education classroom. At a time when entries for UK school exams in modern foreign languages are decreasing, this book serves the urgent need for research and guidance on ab initio learning and teaching in HE. Using the example of teaching German, it offers theoretical reflections on teaching ab initio and practice-oriented approaches that will be useful for teachers of both German and other languages in higher education. The first chapters assess the role of ab initio provision within the wider context of modern languages departments and language centres. They are followed by sections on teaching methods and innovative approaches in the ab initio classroom that include chapters on the use of music, textbook evaluation, the effective use of a flipped classroom and the contribution of language apps. Finally, the book focuses on the learner in the ab initio context and explores issues around autonomy and learner strengths. The whole builds into a theoretically grounded guide that sketches out perspectives for teaching and learning ab initio languages that will benefit current and future generations of students.
Book Synopsis The Dialects of British English in Fictional Texts by : Donatella Montini
Download or read book The Dialects of British English in Fictional Texts written by Donatella Montini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together perspectives on regional and social varieties of British English in fictional dialogue across works spanning various literary genres, showcasing authorial and translation innovation while also reflecting on their impact on the representation of sociolinguistic polarities. The volume explores the ways in which different varieties of British English, including Welsh, Scots, and Received Pronunciation, are portrayed across a range of texts, including novels, films, newspapers, television series, and plays. Building on metadiscourse which highlighted the growing importance of accent as an emblem of social stance in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the chapters in this book examine how popular textual forms create and reinforce links between accent and social persona, and accent and individual idiolect. A look at these themes, as explored through the lens of audiovisual translation and the challenges of dubbing, sheds further light on the creative resources authors and translators draw on in representing sociolinguistic realities through accent. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in dialectology, audiovisual translation, literary translation, and media studies.
