Book excerpt: In 1977, RW Johnson's best-selling How Long Will South Africa Survive? provided a controversial and highly original analysis of the survival prospects of the apartheid regime. Now, after more than twenty years of ANC rule, he believes the situation has become so critical that the question must be posed again. He moves from an analysis of Jacob Zuma's rule to the increasingly dire state of the South African economy, concluding that the country is heading towards a likely International Monetary Fund bail-out which will in turn lead to a regime change of some kind.

Book Synopsis Targeting a Cure for Type 1 Diabetes: How Long Will We Have to Wait? by : Lisa S. Rotenstein
Download or read book Targeting a Cure for Type 1 Diabetes: How Long Will We Have to Wait? written by Lisa S. Rotenstein and published by American Diabetes Association. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will type 1 diabetes ever be cured? Everyone whose lives are touched by type 1 diabetes hopes for a cure but hard facts are difficult to find. Targeting a Cure for Type 1 Diabetes chronicles the diverse efforts now underway to answer this critical question. The writers from diaTribe (www.diaTribe.org), an award-winning free online newsletter about diabetes, have collaborated with the American Diabetes Association to explain the research and to lay out their objective assessment of each therapy—giving readers a clear understanding of the potential each treatment holds and the optimism each deserves. Highlighting the opportunities and obstacles, this book focuses on the four most promising research areas: immune therapeutics, islet and pancreas transplantation, beta-cell regeneration and survival agents, and the artificial pancreas. As a person who has lived with type 1 diabetes for 26 years and an expert on the business of diabetes therapies, diaTribe editor-in-chief Kelly Close understands the weight of this all-important question and provides her personal commentary on where we stand in the search for a cure. The book features a foreword by Dr. Robert Ratner, Chief Scientific and Medical Officer for the American Diabetes Association, and an introduction from Dr. Aaron Kowalski, Vice President, Treatment Therapies, for JDRF. As they remind us, the search for the cure is ultimately about patients, and this book is written to give you true hope—one that is strengthened by data and facts. After reading about Kelly Close and her teams’ incredible journey of discovery, we cannot only continue to dream, but we can open our eyes each morning to a reality that brings us closer, inch by inch, discovery by discovery, to a day when glucose control will be automatic and people with type 1 diabetes will be “cured.” —Dr. Francine Kaufman, Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Medtronic Diabetes

Download or read book Apocalypse When? written by Willard Wells and published by Praxis. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be a key trailblazer in a new and upcoming field. The author’s predictive approach relies on simple and intuitive probability formulations that will appeal to readers with a modest knowledge of astronomy, mathematics, and statistics. Wells’ carefully erected theory stands on a sure footing and thus should serve as the basis of many rational predictions of survival in the face of not only natural disasters such as hits by asteroids or comets, but perhaps more surprisingly from man-made hazards arising from genetic engineering or robotics. Any formula for predicting human survival will invite controversy. Dr Wells counters anticipated criticism with a thorough approach in which four lines of reasoning are used to arrive at the same survival formula. One uses empirical survival statistics for business firms and stage shows. Another is based on uncertainty of risk rates. The third, more abstract, invokes Laplace’s principle of insufficient reason and involves an observer’s random arrival in the lifetime of the entity (the human race) in question. The fourth uses Bayesian theory. The author carefully explains and gives examples of the conditions under which his principle is valid and provides evidence that can counteract the arguments of critics who would reject it entirely. His deflection of possible criticisms results from two major premises: selecting the proper random variable and “reference class” to make predictions, and the recognition that if one does not know the law that governs a process, then the best prediction that can be made is his own formula.

Book excerpt: Investigating a mysterious firefight in Colombia leads a journalist into a world of corrupt churches in this gripping thriller by the author of Necropolis. When a horribly violent confrontation occurs outside of Cauca, Colombia, only a young boy is around to witness it. But no sooner does the violence happen than it disappears, vanished without a trace. Nobody claims to have seen anything. Nobody claims to have heard anything. That is, until an anonymous accusation catalyzes a dangerous investigation into the deep underbelly of the Christian churches present today in Latin America. The Night Will Be Long is a dark, twisting thriller filled with moments of humor and pain—a story that will stick with readers long after they turn the last page. Praise for The Night Will Be Long “This intelligent police procedural from Gamboa . . . refracts decades of turbulent Colombian history through the experiences of dramatically drawn characters. . . . a colorful story with solid grounding in historical detail.” —Publishers Weekly “For my money, there may be no more ambitious, accomplished writer than Gamboa at work in international noir today. Gamboa brings a searching, penetrating style to the prose and unwinds a genuinely compelling and provocative story that interrogates the very nature of violence and truth.” —Crime Reads “An engrossing thriller set in a modern-day Colombia haunted by the legacy of decades of armed conflict. . . . Gamboa has crafted an effective thriller that thrives on his empathetic imagination.” —Shelf Awareness

Book Synopsis The First 20 Hours by : Josh Kaufman
Download or read book The First 20 Hours written by Josh Kaufman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.
