Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beer has never been a stranger to North America. Author Stan Hieronymous explains how before European colonization, Native Americans were making beer from fermented corn, such as the tiswin of the Apache and Pueblo tribes. European colonists new to the continent were keen to use whatever local flavorings were at hand like senna, celandine, chicory, pawpaw, and persimmon. Before barley took hold in the 1700s, early fermentables included corn (maize), wheat bran, and, of course, molasses. Later immigrants to the young United States brought with them German and Czech yeasts and brewing techniques, setting the stage for the ubiquitous Pilsner lagers that came to dominate by the late 1800s. But local circumstances led to novel techniques, like corn and rice adjuncts, or the selection of lager yeasts that could ferment at ale-like temperatures. Despite the emergence of brewing giants with national distribution, “common brewers” continued to make “common beer” for local taverns and pubs. Distinctive American styles arose. Pennsylvania Swankey, Kentucky Common, Choc beer, Albany Ale, and steam beer—now called California common—all distinctive styles born of their place. From its post-war fallow period, the US brewing industry was reignited in the 1980s by the craft beer scene. Follow Stan Hieronymous as he explores the wealth of ingredients available to the locavores and beer aficionados of today. He takes the reader through grains, hops, trees, plants, roots, mushrooms, and chilis—all ingredients that can be locally grown, cultivated, or foraged. The author supplies tips on how to find these as well as dos and don'ts of foraging. He investigates the nascent wild hops movement and initiatives like the Local Yeast Project. Farm breweries are flourishing, with more breweries operating on farms than the US had total breweries fewer than 50 years ago. He gives recipes too, each one showing how novel, local ingredients can be used to add fermentables, flavor, and hop-like bitterness, and how they might be cultivated or gathered in the wild. Armed with this book, brewers in America have never been better equipped to create a beer that captures the essence of its place.

Donavan decides to quit his day job and embark on a new career as a craft beer adventurer. After relocating to Long Island from sunny Florida, Donavan gets back into homebrewing and meets Mike who takes him on his first beer adventure in Boston. Then Donavan travels to Baltimore to crawl the bars of Fells Point. He returns to hook up with Mike and Rich for a tour of Brooklyn. Then he hops on an airplane for the Pacific Northwest to experience really hoppy beer in its native habitat, followed by a jaunt to Denver. Then he's back on a plane bound (this time) for England; he's looking for Real Ale. Exhausted, Donavan tries to take his family on a vacation to Pennsylvania only to find a surfeit of brewpubs including the unique Bube's Brewery in Mount Joy. In the end Donavan returns home to New York with a clear vision of vocation as a beer evangelist.

Home to more than 130 golf courses, the area boasts prestigious American clubs overlooking picturesque Atlantic bays and inlets, along with public layouts climbing and descending the region's sloping terrain. Long Island is home to the most popular municipal golf facility in the country, the centerpiece of which is Bethpage Black, "the People's Country Club." Celebrated architects like A.W. Tillinghast, Devereux Emmet, Seth Raynor, and C.B. Macdonald built many of Long Island's famous courses, which have challenged the brightest of golf's stars. International tournaments and star-studded exhibitions have all been decided on Long Island turf, helping it grow into one of the world's most prominent golf settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brewtal Truth Guide to Extreme Beers is the first guide of its type, defining what makes certain craft beers “extremely extreme,” featuring descriptions and ratings of more than a 100 of the most insane beers in the world—broken down into a handful of specific categories. These are outrageous brews with unusual ingredients, ridiculously high alcohol by volume (ABV), bizarre names and sometimes unsettling flavors. Appealing to casual and serious beer drinkers alike, the book is the perfect gift for the adventurous guy (or girl) who’s always looking for new experiences; the book is a reference guide and a challenge all at once. In addition to focusing on some of the most interesting and hardcore beers in the world, it also features profiles on craft-beer loving metal musicians and extreme craft beer brewers, making it a highly entertaining read. The book sets the scene for what an extreme beer is, drawing parallels and metaphors from the music scene. The author includes an explanation of extreme styles and what defines them. Each beer profiled receives an “extreme” rating, tasting notes information about the beer and what makes it extreme, and a musical pairing selected by the author. There is also a resources section where readers can find recommendations on how and where to buy these brews. Working in partnership with Decibel Magazine, and created out of his Brewtal Truth column with Decibel, Adem Tepedelen opens up the fun and fascinating world of extreme beer.
