It’s the novel we’ve been waiting for." —The New York Times A boy tries to steer a safe path through the projects in Harlem in the wake of his brother’s death in this outstanding debut novel that celebrates community and creativity. Winner of the Coretta Scott King John Steptoe Award for New Talent and soon to be a major motion picture directed by Michael B. Jordan! It’s Christmas Eve in Harlem, but twelve-year-old Lolly Rachpaul and his mom aren’t celebrating. They’re still reeling from his older brother’s death in a gang-related shooting just a few months earlier. Then Lolly’s mother’s girlfriend brings him a gift that will change everything: two enormous bags filled with Legos. Lolly’s always loved Legos, and he prides himself on following the kit instructions exactly. Now, faced with a pile of building blocks and no instructions, Lolly must find his own way forward. His path isn’t clear—and the pressure to join a “crew,” as his brother did, is always there. When Lolly and his friend are beaten up and robbed, joining a crew almost seems like the safe choice. But building a fantastical Lego city at the community center provides Lolly with an escape—and an unexpected bridge back to the world. David Barclay Moore paints a powerful portrait of a boy teetering on the edge—of adolescence, of grief, of violence—and shows how Lolly’s inventive spirit helps him build a life with firm foundations and open doors. Book excerpt: An irresistible debut novel about the wisdom of the very young, the mischief of the very old, and the magic that happens when no one else is looking Millie Bird, seven years old and ever hopeful, always wears red gumboots to match her curly hair. Her struggling mother, grieving the death of Millie’s father, leaves her in the big ladies’ underwear department of a local store and never returns. Agatha Pantha, eighty-two, has not left her house—or spoken to another human being—since she was widowed seven years ago. She fills the silence by yelling at passersby, watching loud static on TV, and maintaining a strict daily schedule. Karl the Touch Typist, eighty-seven, once used his fingers to type out love notes on his wife’s skin. Now that she’s gone, he types his words out into the air as he speaks. Karl’s been committed to a nursing home, but in a moment of clarity and joy, he escapes. Now he’s on the lam. Brought together at a fateful moment, the three embark upon a road trip across Western Australia to find Millie’s mother. Along the way, Karl wants to find out how to be a man again; Agatha just wants everything to go back to how it was. Together they will discover that old age is not the same as death, that the young can be wise, and that letting yourself feel sad once in a while just might be the key to a happy life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of a Greek boy, Nikos Petousis, born in 1936 in Athens, Greece, his subsequent journey to New Zealand as a teenager and his successful life here. Nikos lived through both WW2 then the Greek Civil War in his hometown. He endured bombing – seeing parts of bodies spread out in front of him, hunger – looking for food in the gutter, cold - walking barefoot through the snow, and poverty – five adults living in one room, throughout that period. Despite all that he managed to do well academically, gained a place at an engineering school and graduated at the age of19. By coincidence, a New Zealand soldier from Papakura, Ernie Clark, had fought in Greece during WW2, got left behind when the New Zealand forces withdrew and was then sheltered from the Germans by a Greek family in the Peloponnese. The family who sheltered Ernie Clark happened to be relations of Nikos’s uncle. Nikos could see no future for himself in Greece, so decided to leave Greece and Ernie offered to sponsor him in New Zealand. As the story unfolds it covers the preparations, trip to New Zealand, settling, ups and downs and faux pas. Nikos started the New Zealand Greek Society, helping other Greeks who had come to New Zealand and fostering friendship between the two nationalities. Nikos later set up his own engineering firm fabricating machinery he had designed and he started exporting machinery He travelled extensively through Europe, both East and West, Asia and the United States in his drive to win exports for New Zealand. When he retired he accepted the position of Honorary Consul for Greece in Auckland and has continued to foster relationships between the two countries. A particularly exciting event he arranged was the farewell to the New Zealand Olympians before the team set off for the Greek Olympic Games. At times the story is gut-wrenching but it leaves one with a happy feeling for a successful life.

Book excerpt: When fresh-faced, newly qualified vet Anna arrives in the seemingly sleepy Dorset village of Ebbourne, little does she know that this tiny rural community is about to change her life ... Straight in at the deep end, Anna faces two tricky calvings, an emergency call-out to a frightened mare, lots of mad cats (and mad cat women) and one enormous dog with an injured leg and a threatening bark. Spirited and determined, Anna quickly finds her feet and falls in love with rural life, including Ebbourne’s eccentric characters and their animals. Disasters, dramas, farmers and friendship – and not to mention a whirlwind romance with a local Wildlife Trust worker – this warm and witty memoir offers a window into what working with animals and country life is really all about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Willowes endures a lonely and mostly isolated childhood in her family’s Somerset mansion. Her mother dies when she is a teenager. To the disappointment of her relatives, she shows no interest in marriage as she nears adulthood, preferring instead to read from her parents’ library and to pursue her interest in plants. When her father also dies, she moves into the London home of her brother and his family, where she’s to help with household tasks and the care of her nieces and nephews. Her life consists of this for many years, interrupted only by the First World War. One day after the war, the middle-aged Laura is suddenly inspired to move away on her own, buying a guidebook and settling upon a small village in the Chiltern Hills called Great Mop. Her decision shocks and outrages most of her relatives, especially her brother, who has until this point controlled Laura’s yearly inheritance income. In Great Mop Laura finally experiences the freedom and independence that she could never find among her family, but she also quickly realizes that all is not what it seems in the quiet village. Moreover, escaping her condescending relatives and their narrow conception of her as “Aunt Lolly” won’t prove as simple as she had hoped. Lolly Willowes was well received on its publication in 1926, especially in France and North America. In depicting an unmarried and childless woman who seeks independence in middle age, it was unusual in its time and anticipated feminist concerns of later decades, well encapsulated by Laura’s passionately stated ambition “to have a life of one’s own, not an existence doled out to you by others.” The notion that a middle-aged spinster who abjures a life of service is likely to be a witch indentured to Satan may strike modern readers as a derisive joke. However, Townsend Warner’s satire can also be interpreted as raising serious questions about the stereotypes and social norms, perhaps especially those influenced by religion, that curtail women’s freedom. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
