Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.

Book excerpt: "My cheek is folded into his neck. He's speaking into my ear and I can feel his chest rising and falling against me. This hug is long, gentle, intimate and alien. Thanks to the huge sheet of plastic squeezed between us, covering us from head to toe and several feet further, it's also completely risk-assessed." The Guardian In the Summer of 2020 Dante or Die's Artistic Directors came across photographs of plastic hug tunnels in Brazilian care homes: plastic curtains with plastic arm-holes that allow two people to hug one another safely. They enabled elderly people to hug their loved ones during the Covid-19 pandemic. It struck a nerve, and inspired the company to make a one-on-one performance installation exploring the role of touch in our lives, which could be performed live during the pandemic. Skin Hunger is about the power of touch - a vital aspect of humanity that so many of us didn't realise we needed until it was restricted. The company invited pioneering writers Ann Akinrijin, Tim Crouch & Sonia Hughes, to respond to the idea with a piece of writing that would integrate the physical act of touch into the performance. Crucially, each piece of writing simply cannot be performed without an audience member sharing the space with a performer. This book includes each writer's piece of writing, reflections from the creative team, a foreword from a neuroscientist specialising in touch and images from the original production that took place in a hidden chapel in London's West End in June 2021.

Book excerpt: An examination of solitude and absence, the poems within this collection grapple with the reality and taboo of loneliness pitted against an anxiety of connecting. Exploring human relationships, breakdown in communication, and silence -- self-inflicted or otherwise -- the poems give voice to the fears and experiences that shape us, and interrogate the ways in which we process and avoid. Frecknall's leaps of surreality, extreme empathy and vivid imagery make Somewhere Something is Burning a compelling joyride of a read.

Book excerpt: Mum's Not the Word is a photobook about women without children. The nude images challenge the negative attitudes within society towards people without children, and the text shares stories of birth control, choice, freedom, regret, and pain. Women are expected to provide reasons for not having children, and yet deciding to have them does not require justification. Mum's not the word debates the social stigmatization of women, who, by choice, circumstance or whatever reasons, go against the instinct for childbirth and maternal productivity. Fifty colour images show real nude women in the reverse fetal position. The subjects come from all walks of life - professionals, artists. A few have mental health issues or disabilities; some have fragile relationships with their birth mothers. A couple of the participants also identify as other than heterosexual.

Book excerpt: "Can you ever let go of your past? Cat knows she should be more grateful for her partner James. As a young woman struggling to care for her alcoholic mother, he whisked her away from her council estate home and offered her a taste of middle-class comfort. But twenty years later, the escape he offered has begun to feel stifling and Cat wishes she had made more of her life. She had a place to study at university after finishing sixth form, but her mother was too unwell for Cat to take it. Could she go back now? At a university open day, Cat finds herself standing before her boyfriend of teenage years, Daniel, now a lecturer. As the spark that drew them together returns, Cat hopes that he can in some way help her reconnect with the drive and optimism of her younger self. Or is she simply hurtling back towards a past that can only hurt her further? Will Cat stop hurting those she loves and let go of her demons to become the person she always hoped to be? Or is it too late?"--Provided by publisher.
