Book excerpt: Although The Peaceful, Inward-Looking Doctrine Of The Hindu Religion Hardly Seems To Lend Itself To Endemic Nationalism, A Phenomenal Surge Of Militant Hinduism Has Taken Place Over The Last Ten Years In India. Indeed, The Electoral Success Of The Hindu Nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (Bjp) Has Proven Beyond Doubt That These Forces Now Pose A Significant Threat To India S Secular Character. In A Historically Rich, Detailed Account Of The Hindu Nationalist Movement In India Since The 1920S, Christopher Jaffrelot Explores How Rapid Changes In The Political, Social, And Economic Climate Have Made India Fertile Soil For The Growth Of The Primary Arm Of Hindu Nationalism, A Paramilitary-Style Group Known As The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (Rss), Together With Its Political Offshoots. He Shows How The Hindu Movement Uses Religion To Enter The Political Sphere, And Argues That The Ideology They Speak For Has Less To Do With Hindu Philosophy Than With Ethnic Nationalism The Hindu Nationalist Movement And Indian Politics Makes A Major Contribution To The Study Of The Genesis And Development Of Religious Nationalism, And Is Essential Reading For Anyone Who Seeks To Comprehend The Spread Of Endemic Conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's national parliamentary elections typically result in the election of majority parliaments and the formation of a single-party majority government. However, India’s national party system has changed beyond recognition since the parliamentary elections of 1989. The Congress Party has lost its dominant party status; the number of political parties that contest elections, win seats in parliament and gain cabinet portfolios have increased; minority governments and cabinet instability have become regular features of parliamentary politics. This book addresses each of these aspects of party system transformation in India by applying the analytical techniques of rational and social choice theory. Challenging conventional wisdom, the book argues that the number of parties in India has increased as a result of the unexpected consequences of the constitutional amendment of 1985 that was conceived to curtail party defections. Although the Congress Party no longer dominates the new multi-party system, it still retains a pivotal role in deciding which coalitions may form viable and stable minority government. The Indian case study is theoretically driven and it is readily comparable with other parliamentary federations where minority governments are often formed, such as Canada, and the book finds that these processes are also present in the sub-national party systems of the states, however, with greater variation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a worth-reading, prolific and insightful life-sketch of the torch-bearer of Indians. It is about common man’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has become a ray of hope for 125 crore Indians—from a humble farmer to an ambitious industrialist—having taken the route to good governance after being sworn as India's Prime Minister in May 2014. The game-changer of Indian politics, Modi had taken the mesmeric hold over Gujarat masses with three consecutive victories in the state assembly elections and was a senior campaign adviser drawing unprecedented crowds for Lok Sabha 2014 elections. After getting elected PM, Modi is often echoed in 24x7 Breaking News on media channels and enjoys good rapport with the top world leaders whom he visited during his six months of Prime Minister-ship. The insightful leader led India at the India-ASEAN Summit, G-20 Summit and had bilateral meetings with the leadership of countries like US, Japan, China and other neighbouring countries of India. He has launched new avenues of cooperation with the countries with which India has deep historical and cultural ties over centuries. His initiatives like 'Make in India' and 'Swachchha Bharat Abhiyan' have been widely lauded. Modi has called for innovative effort to make renewable energy, especially solar energy, competitive with conventional energy and pitched for global cooperation on repatriation of black money.
