Logic programming originates from the discovery that a subset of predicate logic could be given a procedural interpretation which was first embodied in the programming language, Prolog. The unique features of logic programming make it appealing for numerous applications in artificial intelligence, computer-aided design and verification, databases, and operations research, and for exploring parallel and concurrent computing. The last two decades have witnessed substantial developments in this field from its foundation to implementation, applications, and the exploration of new language designs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Algebraic and Logic Programming, held in Pisa, Italy, September 2-4, 1992. Like the two previous conferences in Germany in 1988 and France in 1990, the third conference aims at strengthening the connections betweenalgebraic techniques and logic programming. On the one hand, logic programming has been very successful during the last decades and more and more systems compete in enhancing its expressive power. On the other hand, concepts like functions, equality theory, and modularity are particularly well handled in an algebraic framework. Common foundations of both approaches have recently been developed, and this conference is a forum for people from both areas to exchange ideas, results, and experiences. The book covers the following topics: semantics ofalgebraic and logic programming; integration of functional and logic programming; term rewriting, narrowing, and resolution; constraintlogic programming and theorem proving; concurrent features in algebraic and logic programming languages; and implementation issues.

This book was released on 1993-05-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common hazard for implementations of applicative programming languages is the excessive creation of garbage cells during program execution. The available run-time garbage collecting processes are expensive in time and often require a periodic disruption of the program execution. The present book addresses the problem of memory re-use for logic programs through program analysis rather than by run-time garbage collection. The static analysis is constructed as an application of abstractinterpretation for logic programs. The starting point is a previously developed application of integrated type and mode analysis, which basically supplies a description of the logical terms to which program variables can be bound at run time. The contribution of the book consists of a modular extension of the abstract domain and operations in order to derive run-time properties concerning the sharing and liveness of term substructures dynamically created during program execution. Alsoillustrated is how such information can be used by the compiler to improve the allocation of run-time structures and to automatically introduce destructive assignments in logic languages in a safe and transparent way, thereby shifting some part of the run-time storage reclamation overhead to compile time.

Book excerpt: This mathematically oriented introduction to the theory of logic programming presents a systematic exposition of the resolution method for propositional, first-order, and Horn- clause logics, together with an analysis of the semantic aspects of the method. It is through the inference rule of resolution that both proofs and computations can be manipulated on computers, and this book contains elegant versions and proofs of the fundamental theorems and lemmas in the proof theory of logic programming. Advanced topics such as recursive complexity and negation as failure and its semantics are covered, and streamlined setups for SLD- and SLDNF-resolution are described. No other book treats this material in such detail and with such sophistication. Doets provides a novel approach to resolution that is applied to the first-order case and the case of (positive) logic programs. In contrast to the usual approach, the concept of a resolvent is defined nonconstructively, without recourse to the concept of unification, allowing the soundness and completeness proofs to be carried out in a more economic way. Other new material includes computability results dealing with analytical hierarchy, results on infinite derivations and an exposition on general logic programs using 3-valued logic.

The 10 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) is a subfield of machine learning, which originally relied on logic programming as a uniform representation language for expressing examples, background knowledge and hypotheses. Due to its strong representation formalism, based on first-order logic, ILP provides an excellent means for multi-relational learning and data mining, and more generally for learning from structured data.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the refereed proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Logic Programming and Nonmonotonic Reasoning, LPNMR 2011, held in May 2011 in Vancouver, Canada. The 16 revised full papers (13 technical papers, 1 application description, and 2 system descriptions) and 26 short papers (16 technical papers, 3 application description, and 7 system descriptions) which were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions, are presented together with 3 invited talks. Being a forum for exchanging ideas on declarative logic programming, nonmonotonic reasoning, and knowledge representation, the conference aims to facilitate interactions between those researchers and practitioners interested in the design and implementation of logic-based programming languages and database systems, and those who work in the area of knowledge representation and nonmonotonic reasoning.
