Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a strict semantic point of view, nonlinear image processing encompasses all image processing that is not based on linear operators; however, from a practical, evolutionary point of view, the name itself is usually associated with the study of nonlinear filters, mainly the deterministic and nondeterministic analysis and design of logic-based operators. This Tutorial Text volume explores logic-based operators with emphasis on representation, design, and statistical optimization of nonlinear filters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of image stabilization has grown to the point that it is now a common component of modern optical systems for imaging, communications, and remote-sensing applications. The benefits of image stabilization to astronomical research alone are so rich that it is common for astronomical telescopes, built over the last century, to be retrofitted with fast steering mirrors and tip-tilt sensors to extend their useful lifetimes. This text provides the basics of image stabilization starting with a consideration of the cause of image blurring and an introduction to the components commonly used in constructing a stabilized imaging system. With this foundation, an example image stabilized system is described and used to introduce some of the important parameters in evaluating the performance of image stabilization systems. As image stabilization systems are key components of adaptive optics systems, the more sophisticated sensing and correction devices used in this area are briefly addressed. Rather than being a mathematical, rigorous treatment of image stabilization, it provides the basic ideas in an easy-to-read format.

Book excerpt: This text is for those who need an introduction to polarimetric signals to begin working in the field of polarimetric remote sensing, particularly where the contrast between manmade objects and natural backgrounds are the subjects of interest. The book takes a systems approach to the physical processes involved with formation, collection, and analysis of polarimetric remote sensing data in the visible through longwave infrared. (pBRDF) is then introduced as a way to characterize the reflective and emissive polarimetric behavior of materials. With Dr. Schott's text, you will gain an introduction to polarimetric remote sensing, an appreciation of its issues, and the tools to begin to work in the field.

The purpose of this volume is to provide a technical database from which rational IR detector selection criteria evolve, and thus clarify the options open to the modern IR system designer. Emphasis concentrates mainly on high-performance IR systems operating in a tactical environment, although there also is discussion of both strategic environments and low- to medium-performance system requirements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing increase in scale of integration of electronics makes storage and computational power affordable to many applications. Also image process ing systems can benefit from this trend. A variety of algorithms for image processing tasks becomes close at hand. From the whole range of possible approaches, those based on fuzzy logic are the ones this book focusses on. A particular useful property of fuzzy logic techniques is their ability to represent knowledge in a way which is comprehensible to human interpretation. The theory of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic was initiated in 1965 by Zadeh, and is one of the most developed models to treat imprecision and uncertainty. Instead of the classical approach that an object belongs or does not belong to a set, the concept of a fuzzy set allows a gradual transition from mem bership to nonmembership, providing partial degrees of membership. Fuzzy techniques are often complementary to existing techniques and can contribute to the development of better and more robust methods, as has already been illustrated in numerous scientific branches. The present book resulted from the workshop "Fuzzy Filters for Image Processing" which was organized at the 10th FUZZ-IEEE Conference in Mel bourne, Australia. At this event several speakers have given an overview of the current state-of-the-art of fuzzy filters for image processing. Afterwards, the book has been completed with contributions of other international re searchers.
