Book excerpt: A duffer's odyssey on the public links from Maine to Key West. A golfing everyman takes us on a pilgrimage, playing public golf courses along Route 1 down the east coast of the United States. From his first round with French-Canadian partners amidst the potato fields of northern Maine to his final round against a setting tropical sun in Key West, Charlie Slack chronicles the best and worst of the public-golf experience. Each round introduces a new set of partners and opens a window onto a new locale, whether it's the manicured suburbs of Connecticut, the worn-down urban centers of the Northeast Corridor, or the sun-drenched golfing havens of the South. Here in the land of new beginnings, Charlie Slack lives out every golfer's fantasy, a fresh start and a pristine fairway each and every morning. An utterly charming tale of a quintessentially American journey of discovery.

Book Synopsis Online Child Sexual Abuse by : Elena Martellozzo
Download or read book Online Child Sexual Abuse written by Elena Martellozzo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Online Child Sexual Abuse: Grooming, Policing and Child Protection in a Multi-Media World addresses the complex, multi-faceted and, at times, counter-intuitive relationships between online grooming behaviours, risk assessment, police practices, and the actual danger of subsequent abuse in the physical world. Online child sexual abuse has become a high profile and important issue in public life. When children are victims, there is clearly intense public and political interest and concern. Sex offenders are society’s most reviled deviants and the object of seemingly undifferentiated public fear and loathing. This may be evidenced in ongoing efforts to advance legislation, develop police tactics and to educate children and their carers to engage with multi-media and the internet safely. Understanding how sex offenders use the internet and how the police and the government are responding to their behaviour is central to the development of preventative measures. Based on extensive ethnographic research conducted with the police and a specialist paedophile unit, here Elena Marellozzo presents an informed analysis of online child sexual abuse: of the patterns and characteristics of online grooming, and of the challenges and techniques that characterize its policing. Connecting theory, research and practice in the field of policing, social policy, victimology and criminology, this book adds significantly to our understanding and knowledge of the problem of online child sexual abuse, the way in which victims are targeted and how this phenomenon is, and might be, policed.

Download or read book Connected Play written by Yasmin B. Kafai and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How kids play in virtual worlds, how it matters for their offline lives, and what this means for designing educational opportunities. Millions of children visit virtual worlds every day. In such virtual play spaces as Habbo Hotel, Toontown, and Whyville, kids chat with friends from school, meet new people, construct avatars, and earn and spend virtual currency. In Connected Play, Yasmin Kafai and Deborah Fields investigate what happens when kids play in virtual worlds, how this matters for their offline lives, and what this means for the design of educational opportunities in digital worlds. Play is fundamentally important for kids' development, but, Kafai and Fields argue, to understand play in virtual worlds, we need to connect concerns of development and culture with those of digital media and learning. Kafai and Fields do this through a detailed study of kids' play in Whyville, a massive, informal virtual world with educational content for tween players. Combining ethnographic accounts with analysis of logfile data, they present rich portraits and overviews of how kids learn to play in a digital domain, developing certain technological competencies; how kids learn to play well—responsibly, respectfully, and safely; and how kids learn to play creatively, creating content that becomes a part of the virtual world itself.
