Download or read book 2014 Global Hunger Index written by Saltzman, Amy and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2014-10-13 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With one more year before the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the 2014 Global Hunger Index report offers a multifaceted overview of global hunger that brings new insights to the global debate on where to focus efforts in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. The state of hunger in developing countries as a group has improved since 1990, falling by 39 percent, according to the 2014 GHI. Despite progress made, the level of hunger in the world is still serious, with 805 million people continuing to go hungry, according to estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The global average obscures dramatic differences across regions and countries. Regionally, the highest GHI scoresand therefore the highest hunger levelsare in Africa south of the Sahara and South Asia, which have also experienced the greatest absolute improvements since 2005. South Asia saw the steepest absolute decline in GHI scores since 1990. Progress in addressing child underweight was the main factor behind the improved GHI score for the region since 1990.

Book Synopsis The Rise of Early Modern Science by : Toby E. Huff
Download or read book The Rise of Early Modern Science written by Toby E. Huff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-18 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2003 study examines the long-standing question of why modern science arose only in the West and not in the civilizations of Islam and China, despite the fact that medieval Islam and China were more scientifically advanced. To explain this outcome, Tony E. Huff explores the cultural - religious, legal, philosophical, and institutional - contexts within which science was practised in Islam, China, and the West. He finds in the history of law and the European cultural revolution of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries major clues as to why the ethos of science arose in the West, permitting the breakthrough to modern science that did not occur elsewhere. This line of inquiry leads to novel ideas about the centrality of the legal concept of corporation, which is unique to the West and gave rise to the concepts of neutral space and free inquiry.
Download or read book Neurobiochemistry written by B. Hamprecht and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of the neurosciences is one of the most rapidly growing in present biological research. Its molecular aspects are dealt with by the discipline of neurobiochemistry. As the theme of the Mosbacher Colloquium, we chose this term rather than the term "neurochemistry", in order to stress the dynamic biochemical aspects of present molecu lar neurobiology and to avoid the flavor of being purely descriptive and "static", which is frequently associated with the term neurochem istry. This appears the more warranted, since the natural products and analytical chemistry phase of discovering the basic chemical com ponents of the nervous system has passed its culmination. The period of assessment has laid the foundation for studying the dynamic inter play of the various chemical components in the actual biological opera tion of nervous tissue. Thus, neurobiochemis~ry is that part of the neurosciences which is dominated by the ways of thinking and the metho dology of biochemistry. For this Colloquium only topics were selected that deal with the biochemistry of neurons. Thus, we excluded from the agenda other neu ral cells such as glial cells (astrocytes, ependymal cells, oligoden drocytes), meningeal cells, and capillary endothelial cells. This restriction was applied for two reasons: (1) The time available for the meeting did not allow an extensive display of the whole spectrum of neurobiochemical research. (2) The biochemistry of neurons is far more advanced than that of any other cell type of the nervous system •.
Book Synopsis Wealth And Poverty Of Nations by : David S. Landes
Download or read book Wealth And Poverty Of Nations written by David S. Landes and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of nations is a history of haves and have-nots, and as we approach the millennium, the gap between rich and poor countries is widening. In this engrossing and important new work, eminent historian David Landes explores the complex, fascinating and often startling causes of the wealth and poverty of nations. The answers are found not only in the large forces at work in economies: geography, religion, the broad swings of politics, but also in the small surprising details. In Europe, the invention of spectacles doubled the working life of skilled craftsmen, and played a prominent role in the creation of articulated machines, and in China, the failure to adopt the clock fundamentally hindered economic development. The relief of poverty is vital to the survival of us all. As David Landes brilliantly shows, the key to future success lies in understanding the lessons the past has to teach us - lessons uniquely imparted in this groundbreaking and vital book which exemplifies narrative history at its best.
Download or read book Betting on Famine written by Jean Ziegler and published by New Press, The. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few know that world hunger was very nearly eradicated in our lifetimes. In the past five years, however, widespread starvation has suddenly reappeared, and chronic hunger is a major issue on every continent. In an extensive investigation of this disturbing shift, Jean Ziegler—one of the world’s leading food experts—lays out in clear and accessible terms the complex global causes of the new hunger crisis. Ziegler’s wide-ranging and fascinating examination focuses on how the new sustainable revolution in energy production has diverted millions of acres of corn, soy, wheat, and other grain crops from food to fuel. The results, he shows, have been sudden and startling, with declining food reserves sending prices to record highs and a new global commodities market in ethanol and other biofuels gobbling up arable lands in nearly every continent on earth. Like Raj Patel’s pathbreaking Stuffed and Starved, Betting on Famine will enlighten the millions of Americans concerned about the politics of food at home—and about the forces that prevent us from feeding the world’s children.

Book excerpt: Niall Ferguson's Empire is one of the most successful and controversial history books of recent years. Brilliantly re-telling the story of Britain's imperial past, it shows how a gang of buccaneers and gold-diggers from a rainy island in the North Atlantic came to build the most powerful empire in all history, how it ended, and how - for better or worse - it made our world what it is today.
