It aims to examine whether these psychological variables could be used to improve widows’ emotional adjustment and life-satisfaction. The three locus of control dimensions (internal locus, chance, and powerful others) and the two self-efficacy dimensions (general self-efficacy and social self-efficacy) were used to study locus of control and self-efficacy. Using cluster and purposive sampling methods, 887 participants/widows were selected from Anambra State, Nigeria. The participants had a minimum educational level of senior secondary school, mean age of 52.2 years, mean number of 4 children and mean widowhood length of 8.5 years. Locus of control, fear of death, self-efficacy, emotional adjustment, and life satisfaction were measured on 5-point scale using locus of control scale, fear of death scale, self-efficacy scale, emotional adjustment measures, and satisfaction with life scale respectively. The study had cross-sectional design. The collected data which attained interval measurement were analyzed with hierarchical regression. The study followed a quantitative approach with correlational design. The data were collected using standardized measurement scales by taking 202 (N=417) employees as participants through probability sampling assumptions. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics corresponding Percentage, Mean, Man-Whitney & Wilcoxon tests, Pearson's Product Moment Correlation, MANOVA, Regression Analysis as well as Canonical Correlation Analysis. Giving that, participants did not generally vary by their socio-demographic characteristics in displaying OCB, but with the exception of their Age groups and Educational status to show Altruism & Conscientiousness patterns respectively. Work experience was also relatively a good predictor of employees overall OCB level. Book excerpt: Over the past decades, the field of health psychology has witnessed a tremendous growth, and social psychologists have contributed substantially to the theoretical foundation of this field. Their research has focused on a wide variety of health-relevant topics such as how individuals decide to respond to threats to their health and well-being, how and why they change their behavior to avoid such threats, and especially, how they adjust to or cope with the risk of threatening disease and with the diseases themselves. As diverse as this literature may be, however, there does appear to be a common theme throughout much of it--the observation that comparison of oneself and one's health status and coping efforts with others is an integral part of the coping process. Consequently, social comparison theory is increasingly becoming recognized as a fruitful framework for illuminating health related issues. A still expanding literature is exploring the role of social comparisons with respect to coping with a wide range of health problems, including cancer, physical decline among the aged, rheumatoid arthritis, AIDS, stress at work and occupational burnout, and eating disorders. Social comparison theory has augmented knowledge about the ways in which people cope with stressful events, and thus has contributed significantly to it. At a more basic level, research in this applied context has made significant contributions to the development of social comparison theory itself. The present volume presents an overview of the various ways in which social comparison theory has been applied to issues related to health, coping, and well-being, and also points out how these applications have contributed to our insight into the way humans employ social comparison information. In it, the organs are identified as the General Meeting (shareholders), and the Board of Directors, while the officers are identified as the directors, secretary, auditor, legal adviser. The company’s organs take the key critical resolutions cum decisions that sway the company for better or worse. And these resolutions cum decision are implemented through corporate management or governance by the officers of the company. As legal personality, the company has a separate existence from the founders. Yet it is operated by human beings. The company functions through its Memorandum and Articles of Association, which can be altered through resolution passed by the majority of the company members at the General Meeting. Similarly, the company’s performance is also regulated by other statutory law, for example the Companies and Allied Matters Act, otherwise known as CAMA. Most of the company’s officers are appointed by the Board of Directors. However, this is subject to confirmation at the General Meeting. Consequently, as a going concern/business, the company is prosperous when there is a healthy relationship between the organs, and officers, and particularly between the General Meeting (Shareholders), and the Board of Directors. Though the General Meeting works by the resolutions passed by the majority members, yet there are exceptions to this when the court enforces an individual member(s) action against the majority’s decisions. This is an exception to the rule in Foss V Harbottle. The aim is to check fraud and ultra vires activities in the company. To be valid, an officer’s acts shall be done in good faith, diligently, and with care; and the company shall hold the officer liable for such acts. Essentially, the common law held the view that company’s officers owed their services to the company only, and not individual shareholders. However, this position has been rejected by the modern company practice and knowledge. Hence, the roles of the contemporary company officers have been enlarged to embrace serving the company which employees them, the individuals shareholders under relevant circumstances, as well as the generality of the public that benefits or is affected by the activities of the company. Book excerpt: "Tuberculosis (TB) affected an estimated 8.7 million people and caused 1.4 million deaths globally in 2011, including 0.5 million women and at least 64 000 children. About 13% of TB occurs among people living with HIV, and TB causes almost a quarter of AIDS deaths. There is evidence of links between TB and noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus and with determinants of ill-health like tobacco and drug use, alcoholism and malnutrition. TB mostly affects the productive segment of society in their prime. One third of people estimated to have TB are either not reached for diagnosis and treatment by the current health systems or are not being reported. Even in patients who are identified, TB is often diagnosed and treated late. In order to reach the unreached and to find TB patients early in the course of their illness, a wider range of stakeholders already involved in community-based activities needs to be engaged. These include the nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and other civil society organizations (CSOs) that are active in community-based development, particularly in primary health care, HIV infection and maternal and child health, but have not yet included TB in their priorities and activities. NGOs and other CSOs are non-profit organizations that operate independently from the state and from the private for-profit sector. They include a broad spectrum of entities such as international, national and local NGOs, community-based organizations (CBOs), faith-based organizations (FBOs), patient-based organizations and professional associations. CBOs are membership-based non-profit organizations that are usually self-organized in specific local areas (such as a village) to increase solidarity and mutual support to address specific issues. For example, these include HIV support groups, women's groups, parent-teacher associations and micro-credit village associations. CBO membership is comprised entirely of community members themselves, so these organizations can be considered to represent the community most directly. NGOs and other CSOs engage in activities that range from community mobilization, service delivery, and technical assistance to research and advocacy. The strengths of NGOs and other CSOs active in health care and other development interventions at the community level include their reach and spread and their ability to engage marginalized or remote groups. These organizations have a comparative advantage because of their understanding of the local context. Greater collaboration between NGOs and other CSOs and local and national governments could greatly enhance development outcomes. A more decentralized approach that formally recognizes the critical role of NGOs and other CSOs as partners addressing gaps through support to community-based actions will expand TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care activities. Community-based TB activities cover a wide range of activities contributing to prevention, diagnosis, improved treatment adherence and care that positively influence the outcomes of drug-sensitive, drug resistant and HIV-associated TB. The activities also include community mobilization to promote effective communication and participation among community members to generate demand for TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care services. While diagnostic tests for TB continue to be performed in clinical settings, for lack of simpler diagnostic methods, community-based TB activities are conducted outside the premises of formal health facilities (e.g. hospitals, health centres and clinics) in community-based structures (e.g. schools, places of worship, congregate settings) and homesteads. Such community-based TB activities could and should be integrated with other community-based activities supporting primary health care services, including those for HIV infection, maternal and child health and noncommunicable diseases to improve synergy and impact. Community-based TB activities utilize community structures and mechanisms through which community members, CBOs and groups interact, coordinate and deliver their responses to the challenges and needs affecting their communities."--Page 1.
