Book excerpt: This book offers an overview of recent research on the psychology of judgment and decision making, the field that investigates the processes by which people draw conclusions, reach evaluations, and make choices. An introductory, historically oriented chapter provides a way of viewing the overall structure of the field, its recent trends, and its possible directions. Subsequent sections present significant recent papers by prominent researchers, organized to reveal the currents, connections, and controversies that animate the field. Current trends in the field are illustrated with papers from ongoing streams of research. The papers on "connections" explore memory, explanation and argument, affect, attitudes, and motivation. Finally, a section on "controversies" presents problem representation, domain knowledge, content specificity, rule-governed versus rule-described behavior, and proposals for radical departures and new beginnings in the field. Students and researchers in psychology who have an interest in cognitive processes will find this text to be rewarding reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an essential guide for academics and practitioners to understand employees’ differences in personality and how best to motivate them accordingly. The authors provide an in-depth perspective of how organizations can better prepare for the new realities of the workplace. Amidst the war for talent and a continually evolving workplace that has reduced employee psychological attachment, employees prefer to be treated as individuals with the expectation of individual recognition and reward. The authors draw from their personal, corporate, and research experience by combining interdisciplinary perspectives (organizational behavior, human resource management, psychology, sociology, economics) to offer holistic insights into individual expectancy and motivation integral to a successful employer-employee interaction. Interestingly, research remains lacking on the effects of excessive extrinsic rewards on trust and cooperation. Hence, this book fulfills significant gaps in vital areas that existing studies have not yet sufficiently addressed. These areas are psychological contract, excessive extrinsic rewards, and individual differences in personality (locus of control and general trust). The authors use scenario-based laboratory experiments to examine the moderating effects of locus of control and general trust that underscore employee expectations. The differential effects contribute to insight on behavioral outcomes in the workplace that result from employee perception, personality, and intention towards the provision of rewards. Consequently, the book dispels the discrepancies between economists and psychologists about the efficacy of rewards. Findings demonstrate that although excessive extrinsic rewards augment all employees’ trust and cooperation, it is vital for employers to reward selectively those who are most deserving. Findings offer a deeper understanding of the saliency, efficacy, and judiciousness of excessive extrinsic rewards. Employers will benefit by understanding how best to tailor rewards to motivate each employee.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monetary incentives, as a driving force for human behavior, are the main theme of this book. The primary goals underlying the application of monetary incentive systems in companies are motivating employees to strive for superior productivity in line with the interests of employers, and hiring adequately skilled employees. The first goal refers to incentive effects, the latter to sorting effects. This book introduces important theories and concepts concerning behavior under influence of monetary incentives; it reviews existing economic frameworks and identifies specific contingency variables. Based on an integrative framework of elements influencing incentive and sorting effects, a laboratory experiment is presented including detailed methodological discussion on experimentation and data analysis as well as an extensive presentation of findings and discussion of implications.

Book excerpt: Emotional Cognition gives the reader an up to date overview of the current state of emotion and cognition research that is striving for computationally explicit accounts of the relationship between these two domains. Many different areas are covered by some of the leading theorists and researchers in this area and the book crosses a range of domains, from the neurosciences through cognition and formal models to philosophy. Specific chapters consider, amongst other things, the role of emotion in decision-making, the representation and evaluation of emotive events, the relationship of affect on working memory and goal regulation. The emergence of such an integrative, computational, approach in emotion and cognition research is a unique and exciting development, one that will be of interest to established scholars as much as graduate students feeling their way in this area, and applicable to research in applied as well as purely theoretical domains. Book excerpt: "Among the most influential models in contemporary behavioral science, self-determination theory (SDT) offers a broad framework for understanding the factors that promote human motivation and psychological flourishing. In this authoritative work, SDT cofounders Richard M. Ryan andEdward L. Deci systematically review the theory's conceptual underpinnings, empirical evidence base, and practical applications across the lifespan. Ryan and Deci demonstrate that supporting people's basic needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy is critically important for virtually all aspects of individual and societal functioning." -- Résumé de l'éditeur.
