Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, the aim of this volume was to demonstrate in a concrete way the relevance of some of the most important individual variables for various domains of social behaviour. Eminent researchers at the time contributed original chapters that provided an up-to-date perspective on theory and research on important and widely used personality constructs. This volume should serve as a text for advanced level students seeking a historical introduction to specific personality variables and a survey of theory and research on the most widely used personality dimensions of the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research with the Locus of Control Construct, Volume 1: Assessment Methods was created to serve two purposes. The first is to fill the researcher's need for information about the application of appropriate locus of control scales to their particular purposes or samples. It presents a variety of locus of control scales and describes the relevant research and applications. The second purpose for this book involves the general field of personality psychology. Often personality constructs emerge, occupy center stage for the better part of a decade, and then almost silently disappear from view. By contrast, the locus of control construct has occupied a central position in personality research for a decade. The contributions to this volume represent some of the innovations that extend the utility of the locus of control construct to different areas of concern. It illustrates a simple principle—that a construct continues to be viable only as long as it continues to inspire innovations; if it remains static the construct will eventually disappear. This book is intended to provide information regarding new developments and to encourage new questions and applications that may allow the locus of control construct to outlive the brief life span that is common among personality constructs. It is assumed that the reader is already familiar with the basic literature on locus of control research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive evaluation study of elementary education in Israel conducted over several years and completed in 1977. The study concentrates on Jewish schools, but some data are presented from parallel studies in the Arab Schools. A notable feature of the study is its unusually large scope both in size and content. It sampled nearly ten percent of Jewish schools and fifteen percent of Arab schools. The content includes a great variety of areas: cultural origins, home conditions and socialization patterns of pupils, conditions and practices in schools, teachers' and principals' backgrounds and their attitudes toward central issues in education, pupils' personality characteristics and motivations related to school experience, their learning abilities and achievements in five major school subjects. Special emphasis is given to the disadvantaged pupils, and an examination of the problem of equality of educational opportunity. This study's uniqueness lies in a novel approach in the measurement and analysis of scholastic achievements. Like all studies in the "psychometric" tradition, it places pupils in a position related to an advantaged pupil group. But test construction and most data analyses were carried out by the criterion-reference approach combined with a notion of "master learning." This enabled presentation of the absolute achievement level of a pupil or a pupil group vis-a-vis the optimal and minimal requirements of the curriculum and each school subject, as well as for its various content area. This approach permits much more than the traditional methods, utilization of results for deliberation and revision in educational policies. This applies particularly to curriculum construction and methods of instruction. It may also lead to a more appropriate definition of the disadvantaged pupil. Five chapters of the study present a historical review and sociological analysis of the problems of Israeli education and deal with specific methodological considerations. The twelve following chapters present detailed results and analysis for each topic of investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for professionals and graduate students in the personality/social, military, and educational psychology, and assessment/evaluation communities, this volume explores the state of the art in motivational research for individuals and teams from multiple theoretical viewpoints as well as their effects in both schools and training environments. The great majority of education and training R&D is focused on the cognitive dimensions of learning, for instance, the acquisition and retention of knowledge and skills. Less attention has been given in the literature and in the design of education and training itself to motivational variables and their influence on performance. As such, this book is unique in the following montage of factors: * a focus on motivation of teams or groups as well as individuals; * an examination of the impact of motivation on performance (and, thus, also on cognition) rather than only on motivation itself; * research in training as well as educational settings. The data reported were collected in various venues including schools, laboratories and field settings. The chapter authors are the researchers that, in many cases, have defined the state of the art in motivation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book examines the current status of expectancy-value models in psychology. The focus is upon cognitive models that relate action to the perceived attractiveness or aversiveness of expected consequences. A person’s behavior is seen to bear some relation to the expectations the person holds and the subjective value of the consequences that might occur following the action. Despite widespread interest in the expectancy-value (valence) approach at the time, there was no book that looked at its current status and discussed its strengths and its weaknesses, using contributions from some of the theorists who were involved in its original and subsequent development and from others who were influenced by it or had cause to examine the approach closely. This book was planned to meet this need. The chapters in this book relate to such areas as achievement motivation, attribution theory, information feedback, organizational psychology, the psychology of values and attitudes, and decision theory and in some cases they advance the expectancy-value approach further and, in other cases, point to some of its deficiencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positive psychology has its origin in the first decade of the twenty-first century. The present era is full of hustle and bustle, tension, strains and stresses, anxiety, conflicts, frustration and maladjustment, which have made the life of a human being a miserable one. Psychology is not limited to the study of human behaviour; but its scope has widened to the human welfare. Psychologists are trying to make the life of a man mentally healthy, happy and worth living. Positive psychology is the outcome of all these adversaries which are being faced by a person in these days of fast life and high level competition. Researches are being conducted in the areas of psychological well-being, emotional intelligence, locus of control, self-efficacy and various other topics which are related with the welfare of an individual and which are concerned with his mental and emotional health. Positive psychology lays more emphasis on inculcating positive behaviour among human beings. Positivity of behaviour means developing positive thinking, positive attitude and positive actions. The present book “POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY: SOME EMPIRICAL INDIAN STUDIES” has been devised and prepared from this angle. The editor of this book has highlighted the research studies of his PhD students who have completed their research projects during the last two decades under his supervision. All these research problems are related with the different areas of positive psychology. The purpose of this endeavor is to acquaint the readers of this book with the latest researches being conducted in these days in India. Moreover the future research students working in these different areas of Education, Psychology and Physical Education will get benefit out of the conclusions drawn in these studies, especially in the selection of their research problems. Other scholars will also find the recommendations made in these studies useful to them in their lives. The editor of this book is thankful to all his PhD students who have permitted him to quote their research findings and bring out their research work in a book form, as it has highlighted their genuine work completed under his guidance. He will be failing in his duty if he does not thank Mr. Chander Mani Gosain, Prop. Of Friends Publication, New Delhi who has attempted to give a beautiful shape to this book. The writings of this book will advance the knowledge in the field of Psychology and Education. This book is dedicated to all his students and friends who have showered him with their love and affection, which is a source of
