Book excerpt: A musician, musicologist, and self-defined “poet of research,” Amelia Rosselli (1930–96) was one of the most important poets to emerge from Europe in the aftermath of World War II. Following a childhood and adolescence spent in exile from Fascist Italy between France, England, and the United States, Rosselli was driven to express the hopes and devastations of the postwar epoch through her demanding and defamiliarizing lines. Rosselli’s trilingual body of work synthesizes a hybrid literary heritage stretching from Dante and the troubadours through Ezra Pound and John Berryman, in which playful inventions across Italian, English, and French coexist with unadorned social critique. In a period dominated by the confessional mode, Rosselli aspired to compose stanzas characterized by a new objectivity and collective orientation, “where the I is the public, where the I is things, where the I is the things that happen.” Having chosen Italy as an “ideal fatherland,” Rosselli wrote searching and often discomposing verse that redefined the domain of Italian poetics and, in the process, irrevocably changed the Italian language. This collection, the first to bring together a generous selection of her poems and prose in English and in translation, is enhanced by an extensive critical introduction and notes by translator Jennifer Scappettone. Equipping readers with the context for better apprehending Rosselli’s experimental approach to language, Locomotrix seeks to introduce English-language readers to the extraordinary career of this crucial, if still eclipsed, voice of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: This volume on mechanics of rigid and elastic bodies contains early papers concerning geometric statics, accompanied by works dealing with the motion of compound pendula and the deformation of beams. The papers on mechanics in this volume do not encompass the area of hydraulics, which occupies approximately one half of the papers dealing with mechanical problems and which are included in volume 7. This collection constitutes, roughly, one eighth of the entire work written by Bernoulli.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the impetus-based physics of the Jesuit natural philosopher and mathematician Honoré Fabri (1608-1688), a senior representative of Jesuit scientists during the period between Galileo's death (1642) and Newton's Principia (1687). It shows how Fabri, while remaining loyal to a general Aristotelian outlook, managed to reinterpret the old concept of “impetus” in such a way as to assimilate into his physics building blocks of modern science, like Galileo’s law of fall and Descartes’ principle of inertia. This account of Fabri’s theory is a novel one, since his physics is commonly considered as a dogmatic rejection of the New Science, not essentially different from the medieval impetus theory. This book shows how New Science principles were taught in Jesuit Colleges in the 1640s, thus depicting the sophisticated manner in which new ideas were settling within the lion’s den of Catholic education.

Book excerpt: To commemorate the 50th anniversary of his passing (in 2014), this special book features studies on Alexandre Koyré (1892–1964), one of the most influential historians of science of the 20th century, who re-evaluated prevalent thinking on the history and philosophy of science. In particular, it explores Koyré’s intellectual matrix and heritage within interdisciplinary fields of historical, epistemological and philosophical scientific thought. Koyré is rightly noted as both a versatile historian on the birth and development of modern science and for his interest in philosophical questions on the nature of scientific knowledge. In the 1940s and 1950s his activities in the United States established a crucial bridge between the European historical tradition of science studies and the American academic environments, and an entire generation of historians of science grew up under his direct influence. The book brings together contributions from leading experts in the field, and offers much-needed insights into the subject from historical, nature of science, and philosophical perspectives. It provides an absorbing and revealing read for historians, philosophers and scientists alike.

Book excerpt: This volume comprises the proceedings of the 8th Joint School on accelerator physics. On this occasion, the US, CERN, Japan and Russia Particle Accelerator Schools collaborated to present the topic of “Beam Measurements”. The aim was to provide an introduction to the principles of beam dynamics and measurements in circular particle accelerators. This was achieved by a series of lectures under the headings of “single-particle dynamics”, “multi-particle dynamics” and then “beam measurements”, along with practical courses on feedback and signal processing, maps and (no) simulations, practical diagnostic measurements, and spectrum and network analyzers. The resulting proceedings represent a unique summary of the currently available knowledge on beam measurements applied to circular particle accelerators. Contents: Single-Particle Dynamics:Basic Phase Space (A Hofmann)Measurement and Correction of Accelerator Optics (F Zimmerman)Longitudinal Motion in Storage Rings and Quantum Excitation (N A Vinokurov)Multi-Particle Dynamics:Space Charge (K Schindl)Impedance and Wakefields (Y H Chin)Robinson and Coupled-Bunch Instabilities (Y H Chin)Beam Lifetime (K Hirata)The Beam-Beam Effect (J Gareyte)Beam Cooling (D V Pestrikov)Beam Measurement:Bunched Beam Signals in Time and Frequency Domain (J M Byrd)Beam-Line Instruments (U Raich)Closed Orbit Control (J Safranek)Beam-Based Lattice Diagnostics (J Safranek)Detection and Correction of Nonlinear Resonances (D V Pestrikov)Dynamic Aperture, Theoretical Aspects and Observational Features (F Willeke)Signatures of Microwave Instability (E Shaposhnikova)Overview of RF Systems for Storage Rings and Their Diagnostics (K Akai)Beam Profile and Size Measurement by the Use of SR Interferometers (T Mitsuhashi)Noise Effects in Accelerators (J Ellison)Seminars and Round-Table Discussions:Accelerators for Medicine (U Amaldi)Performance Related Measurements on LEP (S Myers)The LHC: Beam Measurements and Instrumentation (H Schmickler)Particle Acceleration in Plasmas (R Bingham)Larger Circular Colliders (E Keil)Future Linear Colliders (R Brinkmann)Practical Courses:Bunch Feedback Systems and Signal Processing (J D Fox & E Kikutani)Maps and (no) Simulations (E Forest)Practical Diagnostic Measurements (M Lamont et al.)Spectrum and Network Analyzers (J M Byrd & F Caspers) Readership: Nuclear and accelerator physicists. Book excerpt: The book deals with the theory and practice of all electrophoretic steps leading to proteome analysis, i.e. isoelectric focusing (including immobilized pH gradients), sodium dodecyl sulphate electrophoresis (SADS-PAGE) and finally two-dimensional maps. It is a reasoned collection of all modern, relevant, up-to-date methodologies leading to successful fractionation, analysis and characterization of every polypeptide spot in 2-D map analysis. It includes chapters on the most sophisticated mass spectrometry developments and it helps the reader in navigating through the most important databases in proteome analysis, including step by step tours in selected sites. Yet, this book's unique strength and feature is the fact that it combines not only practice (in common with any other book on this topic) but also theory, by giving a detailed treatment on the most advanced theoretical treatments of steady-state techniques, such as isoelectric focusing and immobilized pH gradients. A lot of this theory is newly developed and presented to the public for the first time. Thus, this book should satisfy not only the needs of every day practitioners, but also the desires of the most advanced theoreticians in the field, who will surely appreciate the novel theories presented here. Also the methodological section contains several as yet unpublished protocols, correcting some of the existing ones and showing the pitfall and limitations of even well ingrained protocols in proteome analysis, which are here critically re-evaluated for the first time.
