Book excerpt: A rural, working class New England town elects as its mayor a New York hedge fund millionaire in this urgent and inspired novel for our times. Mark Firth is a home builder in Howland, Massachusetts who, after being swindled by a financial advisor, feels opportunity passing him and his family by. What future can he promise to his wife Karen and their young daughter Haley? When a wealthy money manager, Philip Hadi, moves to Howland to escape post-9/11 New York, he hires Mark to turn his his house into a secure location. The collision of these two men's very different worlds -- rural vs urban, middle class vs rich -- propels Jonathan Dee's powerful new novel. After the town's first selectman passes away suddenly, Hadi runs for office and begins subtly transforming the town in his image with unexpected results for Mark and his extended family. THE LOCALS is that rare work of fiction capable of capturing a fraught American moment in real time. It is also a novel that is timeless in its depiction of American small town life.

Test your knowledge with a fun self-assessment activity. Hear the book come to life as you read along in your own book. My name is Toby Hardin. I'm from Texas, but my father is a colonel in the Air Force, so we move around a lot. We've been living in Germany for the last six years. I had just made the starting lineup on my soccer team when "The Colonel" dropped a bomb on me: we were moving to Florida. Once we got there, I found out that skateboarding was king. The sport is the opposite of everything I'd been taught-and everything I believed. I'm definitely an outsider in this town, where "locals rule." Before long, though, I learned to skate, and I soon realized that the sport is an extension of me. I love the thrill of nailing a difficult trick and flying through the air. The Colonel would hate it if he found out I was skating, or that my best friend has started drinking. I've got some tough decisions to make-but will I ever be thought of as a local? Book jacket.

Download or read book Haoles in Hawaii written by Judy Rohrer and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haoles in Hawai‘i strives to make sense of haole (white person/whiteness in Hawai‘i) and "the politics of haole" in current debates about race in Hawai‘i. Recognizing it as a form of American whiteness specific to Hawai‘i, the author argues that haole was forged and reforged over two centuries of colonization and needs to be understood in that context. Haole reminds us that race is about more than skin color as it identifies a certain amalgamation of attitude and behavior that is at odds with Hawaiian and local values and social norms. By situating haole historically and politically, the author asks readers to think about ongoing processes of colonization and possibilities for reformulating the meaning of haole. Book Synopsis Legendary Locals of Metairie by : Catherine Campanella
Download or read book Legendary Locals of Metairie written by Catherine Campanella and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metairie is often considered the dull stepchild of New Orleans--a concrete "Anywhere, USA" lined with shopping malls frequented by fast-food eating, drive-up-daiquiri-drinking, cultureless suburbanites. Despite stereotypical misconceptions, sons and daughters of New Orleans who call Metairie home are every bit as colorful, talented, devious, and gracious as their relatives in the city. Johnny Wiggs kept New Orleans jazz alive. Verne Tripp invented "perma-press" and pioneered use of the electron microscope. On Atherton Drive, David Ferrie plotted a Cuban coup. Peter Gennaro left his father's bar to become a Broadway star. Shirley Ann Grau raised her children here while writing novels. Al Scramuzza built a crawfish empire and coached Metairie children. Ellen Degeneres found national fame, while Becky Allen won our hearts at home. Those who may not be widely known but have impacted lives in the community and afar are also included in this book, which is a tribute to the people of Metairie.
