Book excerpt: The presence of the copolymers at the interface between two immiscible liquids i s crucial to such processes as emulsion stabilization, wetting and micro-emulsio n formation. For instant, for water-oil interface amphiphilic copolymers, contai ning different fractions of hydrophilic (water soluble) and hydrophobic (oil sol uble) components are used. Due to the different solubilities of its components a copolymer chain tends to adsorb on the liquid-liquid interface, thus stabilizin g the interface by reducing its surface tension. The statistical mechanics of regular blocks copolymer in the symmetric case and the conditions under which it becomes localized at the interface constitute the subject of this work. We use the basic concepts of renormalization to map the pr oblem of the multiblock copolymer near the interface onto that of a homopolymer in the effective potential by considering the repeated moieties as renormalized monomers of a coarse-grained chain. A full comparison with the direct numerical calculations of the partition functi on of the copolymer on a lattice allows us to judge the validity of the renormal ization procedure.
