Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the relationship between the firm and the territory, emphasizing the micro-organizational dimension and the interactions between actors at territorial levels. First, the book examines the particular features of the firm considering three key factors - structural design, power configuration and organizational culture – and the characteristics of the surrounding territory as a specific spatial ecosystem with its own institutions, agents, history and objectives. Second, it analyses organizational tenets at the micro- and meso levels with a view to explaining various relational models and their implications at the level of the firm and the territory. Although previous studies have focused on the territory as a geographical space in which firms procure resources and promote development, this book presents an innovative approach and makes a key contribution to the literature by dealing with the firm and the territory from an organizational perspective. The relationship is analysed as bidirectional: a key question concerns how the territory can impact the organizational dimension of the firm, and how the firm can characterize the territory. This will be considered in connection with various effects. The positive effects of the relationship with the territory are investigated in terms of territorial identity, territorial resilience and territorial sustainability. The negative effects include the role of criminal networks rooted in the territory, with firms acting as key agents.

Download or read book Cooperation and Collective Action written by David M. Carballo and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past archaeological literature on cooperation theory has emphasized competition's role in cultural evolution. As a result, bottom-up possibilities for group cooperation have been under theorized in favor of models stressing top-down leadership, while evidence from a range of disciplines has demonstrated humans to effectively sustain cooperative undertakings through a number of social norms and institutions. Cooperation and Collective Action is the first volume to focus on the use of archaeological evidence to understand cooperation and collective action. Disentangling the motivations and institutions that foster group cooperation among competitive individuals remains one of the few great conundrums within evolutionary theory. The breadth and material focus of archaeology provide a much needed complement to existing research on cooperation and collective action, which thus far has relied largely on game-theoretic modeling, surveys of college students from affluent countries, brief ethnographic experiments, and limited historic cases. In Cooperation and Collective Action, diverse case studies address the evolution of the emergence of norms, institutions, and symbols of complex societies through the last 10,000 years. This book is an important contribution to the literature on cooperation in human societies that will appeal to archaeologists and other scholars interested in cooperation research.

Book Synopsis Local Identities by : Fokke Albert Gerritsen
Download or read book Local Identities written by Fokke Albert Gerritsen and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerritsen's study investigates how small groups of people—households, or local communities—constitute and represent their social identity by shaping the landscape around them. Examining things like house building and habitation, cremation and burial, and farming and ritual practice, Gerritsen develops a new theoretical and empirical perspective on the practices that create collective senses of identity and belonging. An explicitly diachronic approach reveals processes of cultural and social change that have previously gone unnoticed, providing a basis for a much more dynamic history of the late prehistoric inhabitants of this region.

Download or read book Since the Time of the Transformers written by Alan D. McMillan and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2000-02-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines over 4000 years of culture history of the related Nuu-chah-nulth, Ditidaht, and Makah peoples on western Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula. Using data from the Toquaht Archaeological Project, McMillan challenges current ethnographic interpretations that show little or no change in these peoples’ culture. Instead, by combining historical evidence, recent archaeological data, and oral traditions he demonstrates conclusively that there were in fact extensive cultural changes and restructuring in these societies in the century following contact with Europeans.

Book Synopsis Restructuring Industry and Territory by : Anna Giunta
Download or read book Restructuring Industry and Territory written by Anna Giunta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the current trends in regional economic development in Europe, Restructuring Industry and Territory explores ways in which the restructuring of industry and territorial development relate to each other, their emergent interdependency and role in economic development. The book argues that the structural and cultural features of regions play an important part in helping or hindering concerted policies for regional development. Using case studies from different industries in a variety of regions, the contributors show that the pressures for restructuring, such as internationalisation or even 'globalisation', have been mediated by formerly nationally rooted industries in Europe becoming increasingly integrated, due to the ongoing processes of technological and organisational innovation, and political regulation.

Book excerpt: Today, in the conditions of transformation of public consciousness, which is the source and driving force of changes in our society, it is the person with his needs and interests who is at the center of these changes and determines the vector of society as a whole. In the context of decentralization of power, which implies more rights and, consequently, responsibilities to local communities, their effective management requires well-considered and sound decisions. The study of the state of rural development confirms the fact that only the integrated development of regions, including communities, ensure their stability and the most efficient use of resource potential. Well-considered decisions of community leaders will promote the development of entrepreneurship in the regions and the state as a whole. Balanced tax and credit policies will provide favorable conditions for the development of small and medium-sized businesses, which involve a significant part of the state's citizens. In the future, the success of administrative reform will be determined by the extent to which local governments can effectively use the community's resource potential through a favorable local business environment, attract investment in regional development, create new jobs and develop infrastructure. Therefore, the decisions made by local governments today must be adaptive and timely, and must be based on the basic provisions of the strategy of community development and the region as a whole, be comprehensive and systematic. However, subjectivity and incompetence in decision-making by representatives of different levels of government an active demotivator for entrepreneurship, as it inhibits its development and the development of communities, respectively. Such domestic scientists as Andriychuk V., Zabolotny G., Zakharchenko V., Kaletnik G., Kubay O., Mazur A., Mesel-Veselyak V., Shinkovych A., Sabluk P. and others, determined the prerequisites for creating highly effective territorial communities. 4 Theoretical developments and practical recommendations of these scientists were reflected in scientific works and directly in the implementation of administrative reform in our country. Scientists have created basic approaches to creating highly effective communities and their further development. However, the novelty of the issue, the lack of practical experience of local government leadership in the effective management of newly created communities and the new challenges of today, require further research on this issue. In order to increase the effectiveness of decisions at the level of territorial communities need further development and scientific substantiation of scientific and practical principles of development of territorial communities in the context of decentralization of power. According to the authors under these conditions, special attention should be paid to: the key factors that influence effective management decisions; features of building a rational organizational structure of local government; prerequisites for rational use of community resource potential; energy and food security issues, etc. This determines the relevance of this research. The results of the presented research in the monograph are made within the initiative of the Department of Administrative Management and Alternative Energy Sources of Vinnytsia National Agrarian University "Ensuring the development of territorial communities in terms of local government reform" state registration number: 0122U002096. for 2022-2024.
Book Synopsis Mobility and Territoriality by : Michael Casimir
Download or read book Mobility and Territoriality written by Michael Casimir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Territorial behaviour among various herders and hunter-gatherers has been discussed in earlier studies, but this is the first time that a comparison of these three types of mobile populations has been attempted. The original papers presented in this volume discuss the conditions and problems of securing access to resources among pastoralists, peripatetics, and hunting, gathering and fishing communities in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. A comprehensive introductory chapter places these empirical studies in a broader theoretical context of the behaviourial sciences.
