Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers insights into the process and the practice of local economic development. Bridging the gap between theory and practice it demonstrates the relevance of theory to inform local strategic planning in the context of widespread disparities in regional economic performance. The book summarizes the core theories of economic development, applies each of these to professional practice, and provides detailed commentary on them. This updated second edition includes more recent contributions - regional innovation, agglomeration and dynamic theories – and presents the major ideas that inform economic development strategic planning, particularly in the United States and Canada. The text offers theoretical insights that help explain why some regions thrive while others languish and why metropolitan economies often rise and fall over time. Without theory, economic developers can only do what is politically feasible. This text, however, provides them with a logical tool for thinking about development and establishing an independent basis from which to build the local consensus needed for evidence-based action undertaken in the public interest. Offering valuable perspectives on both the process and the practice of local and regional economic development, this book will be useful for both current and future economic developers to think more profoundly and confidently about their local economy.

Book excerpt: This document consists of three closely related reports, dealing with "State Governments", "Regional Councils", and "Local Econcomic Development Agencies", respectively, together with a fourth document, a preceding overview. These documents draw from results of a project to identify successful approaches to coordinating economic development and employment and training programs and to assist agencies that want to initiate coordination efforts. Three complementary reports describe how local economic development agencies, regional councils, and state governments can link the functions of economic development and human development, how the responsibilities and resources of the different levels of government can blend effectively, and how the public and private sectors can collaborate to meet both the needs of business and the needs of individuals. The first of these three reports describes how some state governments have successfully linked their employment and training and economic development programs. Lessons are drawn from nine case studies for other states that want to undertake similar efforts. A list of contact persons and 21 references are included. The second report, on regional councils, provides case studies to illustrate the approaches taken by councils in Virginia and Kentucky in playing a catalytic role in promoting public/private partnerships and developing more effective means for working with business. The third report, on local economic development agencies, describes types of linkages, illustrates through case studies the issues in the establishment of linkages at the local level, and offers recommendations for properly structuring linkages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this edited collection is to evaluate critically the relationship between local government and national economic development. It focuses on how the relationship between local government and development is structured, and the specific institutional arrangements at national and subnational levels that might facilitate local government's assumption of the role of development agent. In light of the contradictory outcomes of development and implied experimentation with new modalities, post-development discourse provides a useful explanatory framework for the book. Schoburgh, Martin and Gatchair's central argument is that the pursuit of national developmental goals is given a sustainable foundation when development planning and strategies take into account elements that have the potential to determine the rate of social transformation. Their emphasis on localism establishes a clear link between local government and local economic development in the context of developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic development incentives and practices have grown in importance as cities have tried aggressively to rebuild their economies. The different types of incentives provided on the local level range from low-cost loans for small business entrepreneurs to the use of property tax abatements to lure large plants to a community. The effectiveness of development incentives varies from city to city, as attested to by the examples in this volume of cities where incentives work to boost the economy and cities in which growth management practices have been instituted. Local Economic Development presents current research on local strategies implemented by cities in Britain, Canada, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States. By comparing the approaches used in these countries, an international cast of contributors points to the politics, problems, and successes in creating and implementing effective local economic development policy.
