Book excerpt: Dichos, or proverbs, offer a daily source of strength and inspiration in Spanish-speaking households all over the world. In this book about growing up in Manila with a Filipina grandmother, Maria Paz Eleizegui Weir shares the centuries-old dichos she learned from her abuelita: wisdom that is still useful today, whether you live in Managua, Mazatlán, or Manhattan. In Lo que mi abuela me dijo Weir tells the moving story of how the folk wisdom she learned from her grandmother shaped her life. Arranged by subjects, the dichos provide wisdom on topics such as childhood, work, strife, and love. On friendship, for example, Si quieres el perro, accepta las pulgas: If you like the dog, accept the fleas. On manners, Los trapos sucios se lavan en casa: Dirty linen is washed at home. With more than one hundred dichos, this collection imparts timeless insight across generations.

The collection is unique in its combination of genres, including poetry, short stories, essays, excerpts from novels and personal narratives, many of which are being translated into English for the first time. They address issues of ethnicity, sexuality, social class and self-representation and in so doing shape a revolutionary discourse that questions and subverts historical assumptions and literary conventions. Miriam DeCosta-Willis's comprehensive Introduction, biographical sketches of the authors and their chronological arrangement within the text, provide an accessible history of the evolution of an Afra-Hispanic literary tradition in the Caribbean, Africa and Latin America. The book will be useful as textbook in courses in Africana Studies, Women's Studies, Caribbean, Latina and Latin American Studies as well as courses in literature and the humanities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By combining theoretical analysis and empirical investigation, this monograph investigates the status of interfaces in Minimalist linguistic theory, second language acquisition and native language attrition. Two major questions are currently under debate: (1) what exactly makes a linguistic phenomenon an ‘interface phenomenon’, and (2) what is the specific role that the interfaces play in explaining language loss and persistent problems in second language acquisition? Answers to these questions are provided by a theoretical examination of the role that economy and computational efficiency play in recent Minimalist models of the language faculty, as well as by evidence obtained in two empirical studies examining the acquisition and attrition of two interface phenomena: Spanish subject realization and word order variation. The result is a new definition of ‘interface phenomena’ which deemphasizes syntactic complexity and focuses on the effect of interface interpretive conditions on syntactic structure. This work also shows that representational deficits cannot be ruled out in the acquisition and attrition of interface structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educating Across Borders is an ethnography of the learning experiences of transfronterizxs, border-crossing students who live on the U.S.-Mexico border, their lives spanning two countries and two languages. Authors María Teresa de la Piedra, Blanca Araujo, and Alberto Esquinca examine language practices and funds of knowledge these students use as learning resources to navigate through their binational, dual language school experiences. The authors, who themselves live and work on the border, question artificially created cultural and linguistic borders. To explore this issue, they employed participant-observation, focus groups, and individual interviews with teachers, administrators, and staff members to construct rich understandings of the experiences of transfronterizx students. These ethnographic accounts of their daily lives counter entrenched deficit perspectives about transnational learners. Drawing on border theory, immigration and border studies, funds of knowledge, and multimodal literacies, Educating Across Borders is a critical contribution toward the formation of a theory of physical and metaphorical border crossings that ethnic minoritized students in U.S. schools must make as they traverse the educational system.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1931, folklorist J. Manuel Espinosa traveled throughout northern New Mexico asking Spanish-speaking residents for cuentos de cuanto hay, tales of olden times. Espinosa's transcriptions were published in Spanish in 1937. Now storyteller Joe Hayes makes them available once again, in the original Spanish and now for the first time in English translation. To read these stories is to enter a world where the devil may come knocking on your door and ask you to marry him and where your mule can warn you not to accept the devil's offer!
