Book excerpt: Born in 1946, in Murton, a mining village in County Durham, in the aftermath of WWII, Thomas was to find himself growing up in interesting times. Coming from a working-class family where his parents had struggled to make a good home in which to raise their children, he was to follow the same pattern in trying to make life a little easier for his own children. He experienced the educational system of the 1950s and ’60s with all the failings encompassed within it and suffered failure at the eleven, plus an examination that would determine his future education. A taste of what school life was during this era is expressed with concern and humor both with equal quantities, including the teaching styles and some of the characters he was to spend his school days with, which are told with affection. As a child, life was good in his eyes, and he appreciated the efforts made by his parents to improve his childhood experience. In his early youth, he found himself having to constantly change course to achieve the goals he had set himself, and this continued throughout his adult life. His desire to achieve good academic qualifications never faltered, despite some of the obstacles that seemed to be in the way of his progress. Married at an early age and while studying for his higher national diploma, he became a father to a beautiful baby girl, which now added to this cocktail of life. Although at times life seemed a constant struggle, it was no different to many other young couples of that era, but there was always time for laughter and fun. Many of these times are reflected in the book and still bring a smile to both Thomas and his family and friends. Life’s Journey: Love, Live and Learn is a story many young couples can relate to as they may have experienced the same types of issues in their own life’s journey.

Book excerpt: Beginnings is based on the lives of Greg and Charly that propels the reader on an emotional roller coaster, as events unfold in their lives, including the more absurd and humorous aspects of life. Beginnings traverses the singledom lives of Greg and Charly and what brings them together. The global benchmarks that help define them and a people unfold for each decade of their lives. We all encounter collectively many beginnings and beginnings of the end. We share them for they are part of what we call the human condition. Greg and Charly experience many beginnings and beginnings of the end-some predictable, some unexpected. Some beginnings are critical moments in our lives as they forever change us for better or worse-they bring us together or tear us apart. They are intimately tied to human relationships as they strengthen or weaken the stuff that binds us. The beginnings that impact on Greg and Charly unfold in the pages to come. Yet, these are not necessarily unique experiences and readers will relate to their own beginnings and beginnings of the end. However, I am getting ahead of myself. I would like to tell about the circumstances of my world just before my beginning and the woman of my life, Charly . . . About the Author: In addition to Beginnings and Mirror, Mirror at 1600 D.C., Edward Galluzzi has also authored the following works which are published by CCB Publishing: Side Stepping the Rules and Twelve Upon A Time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the best-selling, award-winning author of 1491 and 1493--an incisive portrait of the two little-known twentieth-century scientists, Norman Borlaug and William Vogt, whose diametrically opposed views shaped our ideas about the environment, laying the groundwork for how people in the twenty-first century will choose to live in tomorrow's world. In forty years, Earth's population will reach ten billion. Can our world support that? What kind of world will it be? Those answering these questions generally fall into two deeply divided groups--Wizards and Prophets, as Charles Mann calls them in this balanced, authoritative, nonpolemical new book. The Prophets, he explains, follow William Vogt, a founding environmentalist who believed that in using more than our planet has to give, our prosperity will lead us to ruin. Cut back! was his mantra. Otherwise everyone will lose! The Wizards are the heirs of Norman Borlaug, whose research, in effect, wrangled the world in service to our species to produce modern high-yield crops that then saved millions from starvation. Innovate! was Borlaug's cry. Only in that way can everyone win! Mann delves into these diverging viewpoints to assess the four great challenges humanity faces--food, water, energy, climate change--grounding each in historical context and weighing the options for the future. With our civilization on the line, the author's insightful analysis is an essential addition to the urgent conversation about how our children will fare on an increasingly crowded Earth.

Book excerpt: In the first major literary biography of L. Frank Baum, Rebecca Loncraine tells the story of Oz as you've never heard it, with a look behind the curtain at the vivid life and eccentric imagination of its creator. L. Frank Baum wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1899 and it was first published in 1900. A runaway hit, it was soon recognized as America's first modern fairy tale. Baum's life story, like the fictional world he created, is uniquely American, rooted in the transforming historical changes of his times. Baum was a complex and eccentric man who could never stay put for long; his restless creative spirit and voracious appetite for new projects led him across the U.S. during his lifetime, and he drew energy and inspiration from each new dramatic landscape he encountered,. Born in 1856, Baum spent his youth in the Finger Lakes region of New York as amputee soldiers returned from the Civil War; childhood mortality was also commonplace, blurring the lines between the living and the dead, and making room in Baum's young imagination for vividly real ghosts. When Baum was growing up, P. T. Barnum ruled the minds of small towns and his traveling circus was the most famous act around. Baum married a headstrong young woman named Maud Gage and they ventured out west to Dakota Territory, where they faced violent tornadoes, Ghost Dancing tribes and desperate droughts, before trading the hardships on the Great Plains for the excitement of Chicago and the fantastical White City of the World's Fair. Baum's writing tapped into an inner world that blurred his own sense of reality and fantasy. The Land of Oz, which Baum believed he had "discovered" rather than invented, grew into something far bigger and more popular than he'd ever imagined. After the roaring success of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900, he became a kind of slave to his creation, trapped inside Oz as his army of demanding child fans kept sending him back there to create new adventures for Dorothy, Toto and the humbug wizard. He went on to write thirteen sequels to his first Oz book. He also wrote the first Broadway adaptations of his Oz tales, and turned his Oz books into some of the first motion pictures in a small and undiscovered rural settlement called "Hollywood". Baum co-founded the Oz Film Manufacturing Company, even as critics warned that no one would pay to see a children's story. And they were right- his early ventures were box office flops and the world was not ready for Oz on screen until 1939, when MGM released "The Wizard of Oz" in brilliant Technicolor. Baum was not around to see it-he'd died in bed in 1919 just weeks after completing his final Oz book. But the book and film alike have become classics, just as well-loved today as they were when they first appeared. The Real Wizard of Oz is an imaginatively written work that stretches the genre of biography and enriches our understanding of modern fairytales. L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its thirteen sequels, lived during eventful times in American history-- from 1856 to 1919-- that influenced nearly every aspect of his writing, from the Civil War to Hollywood, which was emerging as a modern Emerald City full of broken dreams and humbug wizards, to the gulf between America's prairie heartland, with its wild tornadoes, and its cities teeming with "Tin Man" factory workers. This is a colorful portrait of one man's vivid and eccentric imagination and the world that shaped it. Baum's famous fairytale is filled with the pain of the economic uncertainties of the Gilded Age and with a yearning for real change, ideas which many contemporary Americans will recognize. The Wizard of Oz continues to fascinate and influence us because it explores universal themes of longing for a better world, homesickness and finding inner strength amid the storms.

Quentin Coldwater should be happy. He escaped a miserable Brooklyn childhood, matriculated at a secret college for magic, and graduated to discover that Fillory—a fictional utopia—was actually real. But even as a Fillorian king, Quentin finds little peace. His old restlessness returns, and he longs for the thrills a heroic quest can bring. Accompanied by his oldest friend, Julia, Quentin sets off—only to somehow wind up back in the real world and not in Fillory, as they’d hoped. As the pair struggle to find their way back to their lost kingdom, Quentin is forced to rely on Julia’s illicitly learned sorcery as they face a sinister threat in a world very far from the beloved fantasy novels of their youth.

Book excerpt: Three dragons from a clutch of thirteen, spawned by the white firedrake in the frozen mountains of the island continent of Ockland, bring doom and pestilence into the kingdom of Clovis. These evil drakespawn steal a venerated relic from the heart of King Patrick's fortress of Tantangel, revealing other dark secrets threatening the Ocklanders with what remains of the Sand King's curse. Patrick's quest to recover the treasure, the Drakestone, leads him and his company of knights to Erilan across a vast sea, where their adventures entwine with many heroes opposing the malevolent Shadow, more perilous than the Sand King, arising in the east to menace all the lands. Four such heroes are Ronan, Hart, Ash, and Blackthorn, reunited in their commitment to aid the Croe in their defense of the Twilight Wood against the swarms of daemons and necromantic horrors sworn to Ghul's conquest. Yet the Daemon King's triumph seems inevitable over the Croe and their few allies, the great forest only the first step in his path to dominion over the whole of Erilan. Sequel to Arcana, Drakespawn is the second book in the Rings of Silver cycle that concludes with Daemon Glaive, expanding the depth and intricacy of the epic fantasy set within the magical realm of Erilan.
