Book excerpt: 'Silent killer disease' are diseases that produces minimum or no symptoms and are capable of causing death if not treated.Heart disease, hypertension and diabetes are major silent killer diseases. High blood pressure (hypertension) can lead to and make worse many complications of diabetes, including diabetic eye disease and kidney disease. Most people with diabetes develop high blood pressure during their life. Having diabetes makes high blood pressure and other heart and circulation problems more likely because diabetes damages arteries and makes them targets for hardening (atherosclerosis). Atherosclerosis can cause high blood pressure, which if not treated, can lead to blood vessel damage, stroke, heart failure, heart attack, or kidney failure. Three groups were studied with different diabetes interventions. The first was given education only. The second was on a weight loss program, increased physical activity, and had a decrease in consumption of salt and alcohol. The third had all the interventions of the first, but also were put on the dash diet. All three groups showed positive health changes, but only the one with the dash diet statistically increased insulin sensitivity. The dash is a positive step in managing effects of diabetes in addition to the insulin sensitivity. This is because many people with diabetes have a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. Hypertension increases this risk, so a diet that decreases blood pressure will have the benefit of being a tool of prevention of other diseases in individuals with diabetes. Develop your relationship with your medical provider and be sure to maintain contact about any questions, concerns or changes in your diabetes symptoms. All the recipes also include detailed information on calories, fat, saturated fat, sodium, carbohydrates, Total sugars, protein, Dietary fiber, as well as serving sizes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An uncommonly intelligent and honest look at how living with a disease can affect every aspect of a person's life. Diabetes is one of the strangest and most insidious of all diseases: a diabetic can give the appearance of robust health and often lead a long and active life, but within moments can be catastrophically ill, even dead. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, where over 16 million people have the disease. The related statistics are staggering: diabetes makes an individual two to four times more likely to have heart disease or a stroke and it is the leading cause among adults, of blindness, renal disease, and lower-limb amputations. Lisa Roney was diagnosed with diabetes in 1972, just before her twelfth birthday. Sweet Invisible Body is her candid and exquisitely written account of living with a disease that directly impacts the choices she makes in every aspect of her life every day, from food and exercise to career and family. Moreover, and most remarkable, is Roney's willingness to intelligently explore and reveal the usually hidden consequences of living with a disease such as diabetes: how it erodes self-esteem, induces feelings of vulnerability, influences sexual choices, and leads to a heightened awareness of mortality. Full of wisdom, humor, and practical advice, Sweet Invisible Body will be welcomed by diabetics and their friends and families who have never had a spokesperson as articulate, honest, and insightful as Lisa Roney.

Only when diabetes complications persist we become concerned and worried. Often, in times of panic, we turn to glamorous products and services that promise quick fixes. Many times, even after investing a lot of money and time, no results are achieved. Book excerpt: This book has been written for all adults interested in controlling diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Developing a healthy lifestyle today is a chance at living a healthy life in the future. Understanding why you have to discard bad eating habits and exercise more should make it easier for you to keep yourself healthy. As we go about our lives, we tend to get distracted by what is observable, more worried about our weight and growing waistline than we are about life-threatening conditions that the three diseases are building in us. Modern medicine often leaves us little time to ask our doctors why and in what way changes to our diet and exercise can equally treat what appear to be such disparate and debilitating diseases as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Because medical professionals routinely find themselves with too little time per patient and too many patients to fully explain what can happen if their recommendations are not followed, this book exposes in plain language how these three silent killers collaborate to incapacitate us.

Book excerpt: Millions of Americans follow the "best" medical advice every day to prevent heart attacks -- eating the standard low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet so widely recommended by doctors -- but in fact they are placing themselves at greater risk for heart disease. In Syndrome X: Overcoming the Silent Killer That Can Give You a Heart Attack, Dr. Gerald Reaven, the world-renowned physician who identified and named this silent killer, explains why the standard heart-healthy diet can be dangerous and lays out a simple six-step program to reduce the risk of heart disease for everyone. The problem stems from a little-known cluster of metabolic abnormalities known as Syndrome X. The insulin resistance that lies at the heart of the syndrome can turn normal rules of good health upside down and dramatically increase the risk of heart disease. Fortunately, Syndrome X can be cured. This important book explains how to identify the disorder and provides a program of diet and exercise (plus medication when necessary) that can render Syndrome X harmless. Tested in carefully controlled research settings and in practice, this remarkable new approach has the ability to reduce the risk of heart attacks and heart disease for all of us. Dr. Reaven shows how eating a diet relatively high in "good" fats (40 percent of calories) can dramatically lower the risk of heart disease if you have Syndrome X. The approach seems paradoxical: Everyone "knows" that fat is bad, so how can more fat possibly lead to better health? The answer lies in the type of fat and the body chemistry of the people who consume it. If you have the abnormal metabolism called Syndrome X, eating a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet to lower your LDL and blood fats won't protect you. In fact, doing so will increase the odds of heart disease. Millions of Americans have the potentially deadly, yet easily identifiable signs of Syndrome X -- but few cases are detected in time, because most physicians don't know what to look for. This trailblazing book will change that, making doctors and patients aware of the problem -- and its easy solution, an integrated program of diet and exercise that simultaneously reduces all the risk factors for heart disease, including Syndrome X. Dr. Reaven's discovery of Syndrome X has shown us that the standard approach to preventing heart disease is dangerous for many of us. Now, his safe, proven new approach explains how millions can drastically reduce their risk of heart disease. His program works not only for those who have Syndrome X, but also for anyone who simply wants to reduce the risk of heart disease.
