Book excerpt: Lent-the forty-day period of spiritual preparation for the most significant days of the Church's year: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday -is one of the oldest liturgical periods in the history of Christianity. Although its current form came about officially only in the fourth century, its special liturgical character was lived even earlier, throughout the era of Roman persecution. For this reason, the Gospel passages we proclaim at Mass each year on the Sundays of Lent also have a long history, especially the passages for the first year in the three-year cycle of Sunday readings. In fact, those passages have so long been part of the Lenten season that pastors always have the option of using them every year, not just once every three years. This ancient tradition chooses as the Gospel passage for the Third Sunday of Lent the mysterious encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. It takes place while Jesus is resting alone near Jacob's Well and his disciples have gone into town to get some supplies before continuing their journey. That encounter is the subject of this Retreat Guide.

Book excerpt: "Two Volumes.56 Previously Unpublished Sermons on John 4.Exploring the secret of life in all its fullness.Martyn Lloyd Jones asks, 'Why are more people not attracted to Christianity?' It is because they are not exposed to the attractiveness of Christ, the fullness of his Spirit which, like living water, satisfies the deepest needs we have. These 56 sermons on John 4 and the Samaritan woman at the well challenge Christians to drink deep themselves, so that they have something to offer a needy world. They also challenge those who maintain that 'the deeper Christian life' is available only to the few. All of us can - and should - grow in our knowledge and love for the Lord. These sermons point the way to do just that.Includes the following new sermons and more:- The Possibilities of the Christian Life- In Spirit and in Truth- Praying in the Spirit- Power- Mind, Heart and Will- 'The Life of God in the Soul of Man'- Never Thirst- The Authority of the Bible- The Sufficiency of the Bible- A Purpose for Life and Death- The Secret Things of God- The Need for Emotional Satisfaction- Joyful Assurance- The Coming of the Holy Spirit- The Fruit of the Spirit- Experiences of the Lord's Presence- Finding the Lord's Presence- Rejoicing in Christ"

Download or read book Contradict written by Andy Wrasman and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tolerance and co-existence are both great! In fact, they are necessary. If we are to live together in peace without hating each other, or physically harming each other over differences in race, culture, sexual orientation, political views, and religious beliefs, we must have tolerance. However, we must also recognize that every belief can't be equally valid. If two beliefs directly contradict each other, both of them cannot be true, no matter how "tolerant" we become. This means it is false to say that every religion is true, or that every religion leads to God. When people make such claims they show that they have not taken the time to study the world's religions, because a brief reading of the sacred texts of only a handful of religions quickly reveals contradictions on the most fundamental levels. Religious Contradictions Reincarnation (Hinduism and Buddhism) contradicts the belief that this is your only life before eternity (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam). Salvation from sin (Christianity) contradicts the belief that there is no sin to be saved from but simply pain that can be escaped through enlightenment (Buddhism). Jesus Christ is the incarnate, Son of God (Christianity), contradicts the teaching that he is just a prophet (Islam) or that he was a false prophet (Judaism). In light of these contradictions alone, all religions can't be true. They could all be false, but they can't all be true. Are any of them true? This is the most important question anyone can ask. Recognize religious contradictions. Embrace them. Test them. Seek the truth. www.contradictmovement.org

Download or read book 42 Seconds written by Carl Medearis and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The average length of Jesus’ conversations as recorded in the Gospels was 42 seconds long. This is good news for all of us. It frees us up to talk about the most important part of our lives in a way that’s natural, meaningful, and helpful instead of clumsy, awkward, and irrelevant. Anyone who has spent countless uncomfortable hours walking from house to house with a clipboard or flash cards that talk about four spiritual laws understands. Jesus’ conversations were remarkably simple. Contemporary Christian lingo has set up a dichotomy between what we call “discipleship” and “evangelism,” but the Bible doesn’t do that. Jesus had conversations all the time with those who thought they were close to God, as well as with those who deemed themselves lost and without hope. He invited all of them to come and learn from Him. 42 Seconds is a simple book that uses the ordinary moments of our lives the way Jesus used the same moments in his own. The premise is straightforward: If we can learn from Jesus how to have great conversations, it will change our lives and the lives of those around us. Its four-part structure, including five short chapters per section, is for churches and small groups to engage with the practical ideas together. 42 Seconds includes discussion questions to help groups and individuals implement Jesus’ natural rhythm of interaction in their own lives.
