And there are other sound reasons why companies that are seen to be ethical, environmentally friendly, good employers etc, can see real benefits to their bottom line. Recent revisions to stock market rules have made ethical funds available to a much wider group of advisors and investors. This important book explains the issues and the benefits of corporate social responsibility in the context of an analysis of the 300 quoted UK companies currently listed on the prestigious FTSE4Good index. Part One covers recent corporate ethics issues and the damage that revelations of dishonesty and unethical practice can do to stock markets. It explains how businesses can avoid these problems and why it is good to do so. The criteria whereby companies are seen to be 'socially responsible' and the growing importance of SR to investors and other stakeholders are addressed. The performance of the FTSE4Good index is studied, and there is analysis of how the sector compares to the general market. Part Two contains a full directory of the 300 companies listed on the FTSE4Good index, and tables showing how companies fit the criteria. This is followed by individual company profiles and company case studies including: Centrica, EMI, Friends Provident, Whitbread, National Express and National Grid.
Book Synopsis Will I Live Tomorrow? by : Sonia Nassery Cole
Download or read book Will I Live Tomorrow? written by Sonia Nassery Cole and published by BenBella Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Sonia Nassery Cole set out to film The Black Tulip in her homeland of Afghanistan, she knew the odds were against her; she was told time and time again that filming inside a war zone would be impossible. What she didn't anticipate was how intent the Taliban and its sympathizers were on halting the film's production—the crew encountered extortion, government corruption, kidnapping attempts, and death threats, even with around-the-clock security. Her cinematographer fled after two days, and many others followed. After 9/11, Cole wrote The Black Tulip, based on a true story of a real Afghan family. The plot was simple: After 2001, when the Taliban was routed, an Afghan family opened The Poet's Corner—a restaurant with an open microphone for all to read poetry, perform music, and tell their stories. But the Taliban didn't approve, and the family's new-found hope proved fleeting as it struggled to maintain the restaurant and its vibrant way of life. Selected as Afghanistan's official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2010 Academy Awards, The Black Tulip is a modern portrait of Afghanistan that captures the plight and resilience of its people. Without financial support from a studio or anyone else, Cole self-financed the film by mortgaging her home and selling her belongings. Then, with everything on the line, she left for Kabul to make the impossible possible and set out to gather the right people who would risk their lives and willingly be part of the production. In Will I Live Tomorrow?, Cole gives an intimate look into what went on behind the scenes of making a controversial film in the heart of a war-ravaged country—the looming terror the Taliban creates among Afghans everywhere and the challenges and fear the cast and crew faced every day. Will I Live Tomorrow? is a memoir about one woman's struggle to make a difference in a violent world.
Book Synopsis Tomorrow's Capitalist by : Alan Murray
Download or read book Tomorrow's Capitalist written by Alan Murray and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Next Big Idea Club, Best Leadership Books of 2022 In an era of political and cultural extremism, America’s corporate leaders have emerged as the pragmatic center of a movement for social and economic progress. The core tenets of a capitalist system that dominated the world for more than a century are being challenged as never before. Narratives about the failures of capitalism, the greed of the 1 percent, and the blindness of corporations to public need have made their mark and are driving change. These aren’t the superficial cosmetic fixes that generated so much cynicism in the past, but a revolution in the way corporations are imagined and run. Tomorrow’s Capitalist reveals how corporate CEOs—the ultimate pragmatists—realized that they could lose their “operating license” unless they tackle the fundamental issues of our time: climate, diversity and inclusion, and inequality and workforce opportunity. Responding to their employees and customers who are demanding corporate change, they have taken the lead in establishing the bold new principles of stakeholder capitalism, ensuring that for the first time in more than a half a century it is not just shareholders who have a say in how corporations are run. Alan Murray vividly captures the zeitgeist of the real and compelling dynamic that is transforming much of the corporate world.

Book Synopsis The Business of Tomorrow by : Dirk Smillie
Download or read book The Business of Tomorrow written by Dirk Smillie and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A veteran Forbes journalist brings to life the brilliant and complex Harry Guggenheim in the first-ever biography on this groundbreaking American figure. At the turn of the last century, the Guggenheim family ran the most powerful mining conglomerate on earth. Decades later came the Guggenheim museum, which became the hub of the world’s most powerful art brand. In between, the Guggenheim name was uttered in every field from aviation to politics, from journalism to rocketry. But who was behind this epic sphere of influence? It took three generations of Guggenheims to build the wealth in its first era. Yet it was the singular force of Harry Guggenheim who would guide the family’s next generation of businesses into modernity. Part angel investor, part entrepreneur, part technologist, Harry launched businesses whose impact on 20th century America went far beyond the Guggenheims’ mines or museum. His visionary investments continue to profoundly influence our world and hold valuable business lessons for billionaire dynasty builders like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. A flawed but brilliant man, Harry Guggenheim was the confidante to five American presidents and a key financial force behind commercial aviation and space exploration, two innovations that catapulted the nation into the future. With unprecedented archival access, Dirk Smillie astutely examines Harry’s business acumen, intellectual curiosities, and the world he lived in. Whether it was his paradoxical friendship with Charles Lindbergh or his dynamic and ambitions family members, Smillie puts Harry’s life and work in rich context. Epic and intimate, The Business of Tomorrow reveals the fascinating life of an American icon.
Book Synopsis A Strategic Approach to Corporate Governance by : Adrian Davies
Download or read book A Strategic Approach to Corporate Governance written by Adrian Davies and published by Gower Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All institutions require a framework of governance, comprising a mission to be accomplished with clear rules and recognized conventions to guide its accomplishment. This book sets the governance of companies - corporate governance - in a wider framework so that it can be appreciated as part of a long tradition and of a system that affects our lives at all levels and in most places.Corporate governance is no longer optional for businessmen - it is vital - and the events which have led to this and the approaches taken by different countries are explained by Adrian Davies. He goes on to develop a working model for introducing a system of corporate governance, as well as detailing the process of installing and maintaining it. As the title suggests, A Strategic Approach to Corporate Governance explores the link between corporate governance and business strategy, and examines the role of the board of directors in providing leadership to both processes. Moving beyond the Cadbury, Greenbury and Hampel Codes, this book outlines a stakeholder approach to corporate governance which complements the financially-focused Codes. As Sir Adrian Cadbury says in his Foreword:'Openness and accountability are the governance watchwords and ethical standards are the basis on which lasting governance systems are built. These are the lessons we have all learnt from the work which has been done worldwide on the governance of companies. Adrian Davies' book will, with advantage, help to spread corporate experience in this field to a wider range of organisations.'

Book Synopsis The Role of Law and Ethics in the Globalized Economy by : Joseph Straus
Download or read book The Role of Law and Ethics in the Globalized Economy written by Joseph Straus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface International conferences are not organized overnight—especially not when high ranking personalities from politics, business and academia should be offered an adequate platform for addressing and discussing highly relevant contemporary issues. The conference on “The Role of Law and Ethics in the Globalized Economy,” which took place on May 22 and 23, 2008 in the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Munich, was no exception. When the first preparations started at the end of 2006, neither the subprime crises nor the general crises of the global financial system, whose shock waves have rocked the financial businesses in subsequent months, were known; nor were they predictable or even imaginable. Based on our monitoring of the globalization process and its apparent impact—not only on the economic and technological environment, but also on the social en- ronment—it was appropriate for the conference to begin by serving as a platform for analysing the status quo of the process of globalization, as relevant to politics, business and academia, and for exploring how the interest groups in those domains cope with the challenges of globalization. In the end, however, the purpose of the conference was to produce proposals for conditions for “upwards” global compe- tion, meaning that minimum conditions should be worked out to enable people to live and labour humanely. Such conditions would be those which should help avoid otherwise inevitable frictions in society, both nationally and internationally.
Book Synopsis Leading with Integrity by : Michael Smith
Download or read book Leading with Integrity written by Michael Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to global news and social media, we are the most informed and socially conscious generation in history. But what are the sources of inner inspiration that guide our daily conduct and motivations in the workplace? Far from the old Machiavellian dictum that "the ends justify the means", the reverse is often the case: the means determine the ends. This book presents the stories of business leaders who have aimed to build trust in the economy, and have delivered value through integrity, cooperation, stewardship, purpose and sustainability. It proposes the eight Cs of trust which can define the culture of organizations: contracts, covenants, competences, character, conscience, conviction, courage and change. The book makes the clear link between personal decision-making and global outcomes and demonstrates how positive decision-making can lead to change inside organizations and beyond.
