Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Thoughts on Life's Problems, or the World as We Make It The great sin of the present day is not unbelief or misbelief, but the entire absence of belief of any kind. Not one man in a hundred really believes in God or the Bible, but perhaps ninety nine out of a hundred imagine or believe that they do, and it is this serious misapprehension that causes the trouble. If people believed and lived up to their belief, it might answer pretty well, but when they, have no belief at all, and no concern about any belief, what can you say or do for them? It is certainly a remarkable fact that, with a very few strik ing exceptions, no one cares to hear about salvation, either for this world or the world to come, and when it comes to such terms as redemption, regeneration or conversion, they hardly know what the words mean. In that direction they are Simply without experience, and therefore they do not understand. Peo ple have no interest in these subjects, and they do not care to hear the question discussed. People like a lighter and more palatable diet they want food that they can digest readily. N 0 one wants to be told how to lead a better life - that is one of the last things that concerns the average man or woman. People want to enjoy themselves and do as they please. They are quite disinclined to take life seriously. There is indeed very little encouragement for either preachers or teachers at the Open ing of this century, and in their efforts to turn the present generation from its perverse and wicked ways, they meet with anything but encouraging success. Book excerpt: Mrs Dalloway, Virginia Woolf's fourth novel, offers the reader an impression of a single June day in London in 1923. Clarissa Dalloway, the wife of a Conservative member of parliament, is preparing to give an evening party, while the shell-shocked Septimus Warren Smith hears the birds in Regent's Park chattering in Greek. There seems to be nothing, except perhaps London, to link Clarissa and Septimus. She is middle-aged and prosperous, with a sheltered happy life behind her; Smith is young, poor, and driven to hatred of himself and the whole human race. Yet both share a terror of existence, and sense the pull of death. The world of Mrs Dalloway is evoked in Woolf's famous stream of consciousness style, in a lyrical and haunting language which has made this, from its publication in 1925, one of her most popular novels.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Living In these pages I have treated the human problem both in its individual and social aspects as essentially a transcendental one. The separate studies hare been written under the conviction that the spiritual element in man is not only the one feature that gives distinction to life but is the only adequate due to our sphinx riddle of a world. The problem, as here dealt with is followed on many tracks. But whether pursued along its physical, its historical or its economic sides or into our most intimately personal realms it is ever in the sphere of the invisible that the answer is sought. Spite of the modem assertion to the contrary our "problems of living" are finally religious and look to religion for their solution. But what religion? I lost one entire Chapter of the Manuscript, The Social Economy, it accidentally being burned, and not feeling well and energetic at the time I had to finish up the book without this last Chapter, but the Pamphlet accompanying each Problem of Life book, practically contains the same theories and principles that the Social Economy held. A few years ago I Visited Florida, and in my wanderings in that romantic Country I met with a Farmer, who wasalso a printer in a small way, who undertook to print my book on his small hand press, one page at a'time, when not occupied with his duties on the farm. So you see it was a big undertaking, and not a very easy job to print 500 Copies, - but he did gt Thus the publishing of this little book was quite a problem in itself. But my publisher has solved his part of the work well. Thus, although this book was written in a great Northern City, midst its noises and bustle of commerce and industry, and midst a sea. Of humanity in all its phases of human nature it was print ed far away in the South, in a beautiful Ideal hammock home, midst Magnolias and Palms swaying and murmur ing love to breezes scented with Jessamine. Where the song of the Mocking Bird, the cricket, and the whip-poor-will soothe the Soul. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Life: A Solution In undertaking this elucidation of the problem of life, I would have it clearly understood that while I am not to be regarded as a Christian, yet I am essentially a man of very earnest religious convictions. There is perhaps a natural tendency in a Christian country for people to confuse and confound the terms "religious" and "Christian," but the words are not synonymous. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World We Live in or Philosophy and Life in the Light of Modern Thought It is a fair question how dry a man has a right to be when he is writing upon a subject which ought to be of interest to every thoughtful man. The world in which we find ourselves is the common property of the learned and the unlearned. The problem of its nature and of our own adjustment to it stares us all in the face, if we think at all. Hence, I make no apology for having written in a very plain and straightforward way. A truth simply stated is none the less a truth. An error stated in obscure and technical language is given a breastplate which may shield an unworthy life. I hope no one will be deterred from reading my book by the rather formidable collection of notes appended to it. They are intended chiefly for my professional colleagues, and not for the general reader. The argument of the book is supposed to stand upon its own feet, and can be judged without reference to them. My program is contained in the first chapter. He to whom this makes no appeal need not read further, for my problem and its solution will not interest him. That I am wholly in the right, or that I have said what I have meant to say as clearly and well as it should be said, I do not for a moment suppose. He who regards himself as infallible in philosophy, or who speaks with authority, stands revealed as lacking in a sense of humor. Did I suppose it would be of service, I should indicate the chapters which seem to me most in need of emendation by some one more acute; but doubtless the critic will prefer selecting these for himself. We do not want Carlyles to scold us; we do not want prelates, with incomes of a year, to lecture on thrift to poor factory girls sweated on three dollars a week. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Alexander Rosenthal Pubul presents a broad examination of the ancient philosophical question: “What is the good life?”, while addressing how the liberal arts can help us to answer this question. Greek philosophy distinguished between the “noble” (what is good in itself), from the merely “useful” (good for something else). From thence follows the distinction between the liberal arts which pursue such noble goods and the mechanical arts which are only instrumental. For Aristotle, the most noble and excellent good is wisdom itself. Hence the theoretic life devoted to the love of wisdom for its own sake –philosophy - is the highest and the most excellent. This work theorizes the origins of modernity in a rebellion against this Greek conception resulting in a complete inversion of the classical hierarchy. Sir. Francis Bacon reconceiving the purpose of knowledge as power, enthroned technology over philosophy and the liberal arts. The unfolding of the modern Baconian revolution progressively sidelines the liberal arts, as practical economic and technical utility become the standard of value. In assessing this problem, the book engages in a capacious journey across disciplines like philosophy, history, art, politics, and science. It is also a veritable tour across the Western intellectual tradition including Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Seneca, Thomas Aquinas, Bacon, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Nietzsche, Dewey, Berdyaev, Einstein, and Heidegger. It pleads the urgent need to preserve the humanizing cultural ideals of the ancient classics against the modern tyranny of utility and the dangers of a new barbarism.
