Book excerpt: A study is underway to determine the dynamic response of the head and neck of living human subjects to -Gx impact acceleration, using transducers to measure differential displacements and differential angular and linear accelerations of the head with reference to the base of the neck in response to the input acceleration measured at that point. A redundant photographic data system is being used for validation. Preliminary results are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the second edition of The Whiplash Encyclopedia, Robert Ferrari revisits the notion that whiplash is an example of illness induced by society, in general, and by physicians in particular. The second edition takes the work out of understanding all the different dimensions of whiplash, be it why some people get chronic neck pain and others do not, what causes jaw pain, what therapies work and which do not, how we can understand the effect that psychosocial factors have on recovery, what effect litigation and insurance systems have on recovery, and many other topics. The Whiplash Encyclopedia leaves no topic on whiplash uncovered, and can be used in any medicolegal practice. The next time you have a question about whiplash, the answer is likely to be found in The Whiplash Encyclopedia. The Whiplash Encyclopedia, Second Edition explores new theories being heralded to explain chronic whiplash; discusses Central Sensitization; and includes a new chapter in whiplash mythology. In addition, it expands on the knowledge of what causes (and what does not cause) the many neurological and cognitive symptoms reported by whiplash patients. The second edition also investigates the Whiplash Cultures and countries where chronic whiplash is epidemic and examines those cultures by laying them next to countries that, despite having motor vehicle collisions as frequently as elsewhere in the world, and frequently having physicians diagnose acute whiplash, rarely or uncommonly has anyone taking the stage as chronic whiplash characters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing on accidental injury often seems to occur from one of two perspec tives. One perspective is that of those involved in aspects of injury diagnosis and treatment and the other is that of those in the engineering and biologic sciences who discuss mechanical principles and simulations. From our point of view, significant information problems exist at the inter face: Persons in the business of diagnosis and treatment do not know how to access, use, and evaluate theoretical information that does not have obvious practical applications; persons on the theoretical side do not have enough real life field data with which to identify problems or to evaluate solutions. The ideal system provides a constant two-way flow of data that permits continuous problem identification and course correction. This book attempts to provide a state-of-the-art look at the applied bio mechanics of accidental-injury causation and prevention. The authors are recognized authorities in their specialized fields. It is hoped that this book will stimulate more applied research in the field of accidental-injury causation and prevention. Alan M. Nahum John W. Book excerpt: DHM and Posturography explores the body of knowledge and state-of-the-art in digital human modeling, along with its application in ergonomics and posturography. The book provides an industry first introductory and practitioner focused overview of human simulation tools, with detailed chapters describing elements of posture, postural interactions, and fields of application. Thus, DHM tools and a specific scientific/practical problem – the study of posture – are linked in a coherent framework. In addition, sections show how DHM interfaces with the most common physical devices for posture analysis. Case studies provide the applied knowledge necessary for practitioners to make informed decisions. Digital Human Modelling is the science of representing humans with their physical properties, characteristics and behaviors in computerized, virtual models. These models can be used standalone, or integrated with other computerized object design systems, to design or study designs, workplaces or products in their relationship with humans. - Presents an introductory, up-to-date overview and introduction to all industrially relevant DHM systems that will enable users on trialing, procurement decisions and initial applications - Includes user-level examples and case studies of DHM application in various industrial fields - Provides a structured and posturography focused compendium that is easy to access, read and understand

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 50 years, crash studies involving human subjects have improved understanding of occupant and vehicle kinematics, helped explain injury mechanisms in lower speed collisions, and led to improved seat and vehicle design. Human Subject Crash Testing: Innovations and Advances includes 42 of the most important historical and current studies which used living human subjects in frontal, side, and rear-end impacts. Covering more than 50 years of research (from 1955 through 2006), the book includes numerous landmark SAE papers, as well as papers from other conference proceedings. Papers were chosen based on criteria that included quality and rigor of methods, uniqueness, number of subjects, and long-term reference value. This book also features a comprehensive bibliography, which contains brief summaries of other relevant human subject crash test studies that are not included in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Injury is recognized as a major public health issue worldwide. In most countries, injury is the leading cause of death and disability for children and young adults age 1 to 39 years. Each year in the United States, injury claims about 170,000 lives and results in over 30 million emergency room visits and 2.5 million hospitalizations. Injury is medically defined as organ/tissue damages inflicted upon oneself or by an external agent either accidentally or deliberately. Injury encompasses the undesirable consequences of a wide array of events, such as motor vehicle crashes, poisoning, burns, falls, and drowning, medical error, adverse effects of drugs, suicide and homicide. The past two decades have witnessed a remarkable growth in injury research, both in scope and in depth. To address the tremendous health burden of injury morbidity and mortality at the global level, the World Health Organization in 2000 created the Department of Injury and Violence Prevention, which has produced several influential reports on violence, traffic injury, and childhood injury. The biennial World Conference on Injury Control and Safety Promotion attracts a large international audience and has been successfully convened nine times in different countries. In the United States, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control became an independent program of the federal Centers for Disease Prevention and Control in 1997. Since then, each state health department has created an office in charge of injury prevention activities and over a dozen universities have established injury control research centers. This volume will fill an important gap in the scientific literature by providing a comprehensive and up-to-date reference resource to researchers, practitioners, and students working on different aspects of the injury problem and in different practice settings and academic fields.
