Book excerpt: This story describes the trials and tribulations of one of the many unknown Texas heroines. There is great fear, sorrow, struggle, uncertainty, romance, history, and joy. The story is about a woman named Sofia. She did not sport a pistol, crack a whip, or handle a rope as a few frontier women did during the latter part of the 1800’s and early 1900’s when there was border banditry. It is a true story about a woman with no education, who could not read or write. She had an accounting system of using knots on a string and created a few Moms and Pop stores. The story is told as seen through the eyes of baby boy up to his teenage years in the military during the Viet Nam War when she passed away. Born in 1887 she lived through the silent films to the talking motion pictures, Mexican Revolution, that affected the Texas/Mexico border, the initiation of Social Security, the Gusher Age which was the Texas oil boom, and the following wars: World war I, World war II, along with the (Unterseeboot) U-boats which sank ships in the Gulf of Mexico and patrol pretty close to the shores of South Texas, Korean conflict, and the Vietnam conflict. She saw the invention of television. Sofia with her life experiences weathered the great depression, which began with the crash of Wall Street of the month of October 1929. She got to know of the prohibition era, which governed the national ban on the sale, manufacture and transportation of alcohol, in place from 1920 to 1933 mandated by the 18th amendment, civil rights movement, cold war, arms race, and space race. She was always keeping up with the current events by radio and television that affected American lives. As time passed she got to witness the first man in space and the first man on the moon by watching one modern marvel, which was the television. Sofia had no schooling but was knowledgeable of the law. She knew that it was imperative that her boys (Husband, sons, grandsons, and great grandsons) register for the draft. There is some description in this story about the atrocities committed by the Texas Rangers, border Bandits, wild Indians, The Mexican American or Chicano movements, some of the migrant issues, a couple of comical situations, and addresses education. There is some content about the turbulent times of the 60’s and 70’s. Sofia raised her children, grandchildren, and finally her oldest great grandson. She was tough as nails and would not put up with anyone’s nonsense. Sofia's Life describes the heart breaking hardships encountered by Sofia.

The authors identify key policy challenges for the future related to NEETS, overeducation, self-employment, and ethnic differences in outcomes. This illustrates the need to encompass a wider understanding of youth employment and job insecurity by including an analysis of economic production and how it relates to social reproduction of labor if policy intervention is to be effective. The mapping and extensive analysis in this book are the result of a 3½-year, European Union-funded research project (Strategic Transitions for Youth Labour in Europe, or STYLE; http://www.style-research.eu) coordinated by Jacqueline O'Reilly. Book excerpt: Preface – Introduction 1 Heiderose Kilper “New Disparities in Spatial Development in Europe” – several topics are included in both the title and theme of the German Annual of Spatial Research and Policy for the Year 2009. We are frst of all concerned with the concept of spatial disparities, which has its roots in national spatial planning and spatial development policy. Regional development as interregional equalisation policy, for example, is well-anchored in the German constitution through fundamental legal standards and the division of powers among the respective federal states. The “establishment of uniform living conditions within the federal territory” and “securing the uniformity of living conditions beyond the borders of any single federal state” (Section 72 Paragraph 2 of German Basic Law [GG]) are expressly specifed as aims of government action in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany. With the major reform of Germany’s fnancial system in 1969 and incorporation of the joint task “Improvement 1 of the Regional Economic Structure” in Section 91a of German Basic Law [GG] interventions on the part of the federal government and the wealthy federal states for the beneft of states and regions with less economic success were legitimised in constitutional terms as well. All of this would be inconceivable without the concept of spatial disparities.

These laws are extracted from Marx’s main work – Capital. From 1917 to 1991, the totalitarian system in USSR and East Europe was called socialism, and even by the scientific nonsense and absurd names of communism and communist system. In this system, the official ideology was allegedly Marxism, but really it could not endure any Marxist criticism. There was never any socialism anywhere! In the twentieth century, we passed through a system of utopian socialism as proof that this was not socialism that was not possible, but for the utopia of writers before and after Marx. We were visited by a utopian socialism, which at the contemporary stage is simply capitalism – state, monopolistic. There is no better application of Keynes’s doctrine than the “socialism” of the twentieth century. His “planned capitalism” is actually “planned socialism.”

Book excerpt: In recent years crackdowns on immigrant labor and a shrinking job market in California, Arizona, and Texas have pushed Latine immigrants to new destinations, particularly places in the American South. Although many of these immigrants work in manufacturing or food-processing plants, a growing number belong to the professional middle class. These professionals find that despite their privileged social class and regardless of their national origin, many non-Latines assume that they are undocumented working-class Mexicans, the stereotype of the “typical Latine.” In Precarious Privilege, sociologist Irene Browne focuses on how first-generation middle-class Mexican and Dominican immigrants in Atlanta respond to this stigmatizing assumption. Browne finds that when asked to identify themselves by race, these immigrants either reject racial identities entirely or draw on belief systems from Mexico and the Dominican Republic that emphasize European-indigenous mixed race identities. When branded as typical Latines in the U.S., Mexican middle-class immigrants emphasize their social class or explain that a typical Latine can be middle-class, while Dominicans simply indicate that they are not Mexican. Rather than blame systemic racism, both Mexican and Dominican middle-class immigrants often attribute misperceptions of their identity to non-Latines’ ignorance or to individual Latines’ lack of effort in trying to assimilate. But these middle-class Latine immigrants do not simply seek to position themselves on par with the U.S.-born white middle class. Instead, they leverage their cosmopolitanism—for example, their multilingualism or their children’s experiences traveling abroad—to engage in what Browne calls “one-up assimilation,” a strategy that aims to position them above the white middle class, who are often monolingual and unaware of the world outside the United States. Middle-class Latines’ cosmopolitanism and valuing of diversity also lead them to have cordial relations with African Americans, but these immigrants do not see themselves as sharing African Americans’ status as oppressed minorities. Although the stereotype of the typical Latine has made middle-class Latine immigrants susceptible to stigma, they insist that this stigma does not play a significant role in their lives. In many cases, they view the stereotype as a minor issue, feel that opportunities for upward mobility outweigh any negative experiences, or downplay racism by emphasizing their class privilege. Browne observes that while downplaying racism may help middle-class Latine immigrants maintain their dignity, it also perpetuates inequality by reinforcing the lower status of working-class undocumented immigrants. It is thus imperative, Browne argues, to repeal harsh anti-immigration policies, a move that will not only ease the lives of the undocumented but also send a message about who belongs in the country. Offering a nuanced exploration of how race, social class, and immigration status intersect, Precarious Privilege provides a complex portrait of middle-class Latine immigrants in the United States today.
