Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 12 of 16 An interval of repose, and even of domestic comfort, succeeded the birth of la Consolatrice, as James II. fondly called the child of his adversity. Mary Beatrice, though deprived of the pomp and power of royalty, and a queen only in name, was assuredly much happier in her shadowy court at St. Germains than she had been as a childless mother and neglected wife amidst the joyless splendor of Whitehall. She was now blessed with two of the loveliest and most promising children in the world, and possessed of the undivided affection of a husband, who was only the dearer to her for his misfortunes. Like the faithful ivy, she appeared to cling more fondly to the tempest-scathed oak in its leafless ruins than when in its majestic prime. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 15 of 16 Away with these childish wranglings with the unalter able past! Facts regarding the queenly sisters, both of Tudor and of Stuart, remain extant, defying all attempts to stifle them, guarded in manuscript among our archives, or those of France. Incidents may be told maliciously or apologetically; in both cases the author's comment may stand in absurd contradiction to quoted authority, but these deviations from the majestic simplicity of recti tude will have the consequence of disgusting the public, and will ever render a narrative unreadable. Can a more absurd spectacle exist than when the comments of writers appear at Open war with the facts they have just cited from documents? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 9 of 16 British islands. Her dower, moreover, completed the geo graphical wholeness of her husband's fortunate inheritance; for the Orkney and Shetland islands, which had in the preceding century been pawned by Denmark to Scotland, were yielded ultimately to the Scottish king on condition of his marrying this princess. The sovereignty of these barren islands may appear, at the present day, a trifling addition to the majesty Of the British crown; yet they are links Of the great insular empire of the sea, and their reten tion by any rival maritime power must have caused, at some time or other, a considerable waste of blood and treasure. Anne of Denmark was the first queen-consort of Great Britai(R) title which has been borne by the wives of our sovereigns from the commencement of the seven teenth century to the present era. Before, however, she attained this dignity, she had presided fourteen years over the court Of Scotland, as queen-consort of James VI. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 10 of 16 The following graphic portrait, drawn by her friend madame de Motteville, gives a faithful description of queen Henrietta, both in person and mind; and it must be re membered that the study was from life, and the result of familiar acquaintance I found this once lovely queen very ill, and much changed, being meagre and shrunk to a shadow. Her mouth, which naturally was the worst feature of her face, had become too large; even her form seemed marred. She still had beautiful eyes, a charming com plexion, a nose finely formed, and something in her ex pression so spirituelle and agreeable that it commanded the love of every one; she had, withal, great wit and a brilliant mind, which delighted all her auditors. She was not above being agreeable in society, and was, at the same time, sweet, sincere, easy, and accessible, living with those who had the honor of her intimacy without form or ceremony. Her temper was by nature gay and cheerful. Often, when her tears were streaming while she narrated her troubles, the reminiscence of some ridiculous adventure would occur, and she would make all the company laugh by her wit and lively description before her own eyes were dry. To me her con versation usually took a solid tone; her grief and deep feel ing made her look on this life and the pride of it in a true light, which rendered her far more estimable than she would have been bad sorrow never touched her. She was naturally a most generous character: those who knew her in her prosperity assured me, that her hand was most bounteous as long as she had aught to give. Such is the sketch drawn by Henrietta's most intimate friend, who was at the same time one of the most virtuous, the most aecom plished and learned of her countrywomen. The French people, not yet agitated by the insurgency of the civil war of the Fronde, paid the most affectionate at tention to Henrietta, regarding her as the daughter, sister. The royal infant was often ferried over the Thames to Windsor castle, when her parents sojourned there. Her education must have commenced at a very tender age, if her early attainments in music may be taken in evidence. After the first months of her infancy no more payments occur to Katharine Pole as her wet-nurse, but the care of her person was consigned to lady Margaret Bryan, the wife of sir Thomas Bryan, who was called the lady mistress. This lady superintended the temperate meals of the royal infant, which consisted of one d sh of meat, with bread. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, Vol. 5 of 16: From the Norman Conquest; Compiled From Official Records and Other Authentic Documents, Private as Well as Public "Jane Seymour was the fairest, the discreetest, and the most meritorious of all Henry VIII.'s wives." This assertion has been generally repeated by all historians to the present hour, yet, doubtless, the question has frequently occurred to their readers, in what did her merit consist? Customs may vary at various eras, but the laws of moral justice are unalterable: difficult would it be to reconcile them with the first actions known of this discreet lady, for discretion is the attribute the biographer of Henry VIII., lord Herbert, peculiarly challenges as her own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England From the Norman Conquest, Vol. 8 of 16: Compiled From the Official Records and Other Authentic Documents, Private as Well as Public Soon after Elizabeth's return from her Kentish progress, the following strange circumstance occurred - A crazy fanatic, named Peter Burchet, having persuaded himself, by the misapplication of certain Scripture texts, that it was lawful to kill all who opposed the gospel, - that is to say, those who took a different view of church government from the furious sect to which he belonged, - wounded the famous naval commander Hawkins with his dagger, mis taking him for sir Christopher Hatton, whom he intended to despatch as an enemy of the Puritans. The queen was so much incensed at this outrage that she ordered justice to be done on Burchet in the summary way of martial law,1 and directed her secretary to bring the commission to her after dinner for her signature. Sussex, her lord chamber lain, wrote in great haste to Burleigh to apprise him of her majesty's intention, and that he and all her lords in wait ing were in consternation at the royal mandate. What will become of this act after dinner, says he, your lord ship shall hear to-night. Her prudent counsellors suc ceeded, finally, in convincing her majesty that the ceremony of a trial was necessary before an Englishman could be executed for any offence whatsoever. It appears almost incredible that Elizabeth, after reigning sixteen years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, Vol. 3 of 6: From the Norman Conquest Scarcely was this nursery affair of state accomplished, before Henry exerted his paternal care in seeking to provide the royal weanling with a suitable consort, by entering into a negotiation with Francis I. Of France for a union between this infant princess and the duke of Angou leme, the third son of that monarch. Henry proposed that the young duke should be educated in England, and should hold the duchy of Angouleme2 independently of the French crown, in the event of his coming to the crown of England through his marriage with Elizabeth. The project of educating the young French prince, who was selected for the husband of the presumptive-heiress of England, according to the manners and customs of the realm of which' she might hereafter become the sovereign, was a sagacious idea; but Henry clogged the matrimonial treaty with conditions which it was out of the power of the king of France to ratify, and it proved abortive.
