Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Celebrated Women: By the Author of Peter Parley's Tales IT is an oft-quoted proposition of Rousseau, that the glory of woman lies in being unknown. If this be true, we shall deserve little credit for placing before the World these brief sketches of a few of the sex who have acquired celebrity among mankind. We are disposed to think, however, that the oracular Words of the Genevan philosopher - though they may coincide with the despotism of the lords of creation, who would arrogate, not merely the sceptre of power, but the trump of fame, entirely to them selves like most other oracles, are liable to many exceptions. It may indeed be true that the happiness of women is generally to be found in the quiet of the domestic circle 5 but that all, without distinction, should be confined to it, and that whenever one of the sex departs from it, she departs from her allotted sphere, is no more true than a similar prop osition would be of men. Elizabeth of England, though little to be esteemed as a woman, did as much credit to her sex as her father did to his 5 and while he enjoys the renow'n of having achieved the reformation in England, she is entitled to the, credit of having been not only his superior as a sovereign, but one of the greatest sovereigns that ever occupied a throne. J 0331 of Arc performed achievements for her country scarcely less than miraculous; and Hannah More afforded, by her pen, more efficient protection to the three kingdoms against the volcanic shock of the French revolution than the entire army and navy of Great Britain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Famous Women IN this little book I am going to tell you about some of the women who have been famous in the past. There are perhaps many names more famous than those I have chosen, but it was not always the best women who were the most talked about. In the past it was seldom that any woman, who was not a royal lady or some great aristocrat, became known to the world. In the early days of Christianity, many women suffered bravely for their faith, and later in the convents there were studious nuns who became known for their learning. In the account of St. Hilda you will read of one of the most famous of these. But most women were busy in keeping their houses, and had to do many things which no woman would dream of doing now. Cloth and linen had to be woven at home, simple medicines and ointments were made by the great ladies, who had often to act as doctors as well as nurses. Only few women had any book learning, and it was long before it was thought desirable for a woman to learn to writef When good schools were started for boys, few people thought it desirable to do anything for the education of girls. It was not till the nineteenth century that a change began, and that people as a rule began to think that, as girls had minds as well as boys, it was as well to give them the chance of learning. When you read about Mrs. Somerville, you will see how great was the change in her lifetime. No one troubled to teach her when she was a Child, but before her death the first colleges for women were founded at Cambridge. Joan of Kent is an example of the aimless life led by a great lady in the Middle Ages who was kindly and beloved, but did not know how to make her life of use to others. Margaret Beaumont was also a great lady and might have spent her days in pleasure, but the experiences of her life made her serious, and she used her life and her money in the service of others. Since their day, there have been many great ladies who have been like one or other of these two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sister of Marie Antoinette: The Life-Story of Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples Although the tragic history of the life and death of Marie Antoinette, Archduchess of Austria and Queen of France, is so familiar to the most casual of readers, many people appear to know nothing whatever about any of her sisters, of whom seven grew up into girlhood and womanhood and several survived her. Most of these daughters of the Empress-Queen Maria Theresia were pretty and attractive, some were highly gifted and beautiful, but with one exception they were all overshadowed by a fatality which doomed them either to an early death, a disappointed life, or else to sorrows, dangers, and calamities which, as well as the grandeur of their birth, separated them from ordinary women. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Celebrated Women, Vol. 1 of 2 That a female warrior, even inspired by enthusi astio love for her country, should perform deeds, of which the most celebrated generals of the age might have been proud, appears more like the fiction of the poet than a transaction in real life; yet such was the case with Joan of Arc. But, before we proceed to give a circumstantial detail of a life so extraordina ry, we must briefly notice the period of history at which she appeared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Lives of Noble Women In selecting the subjects of his biographical sketches, the author has endeavoured to fix upon women who have been not less distinguished by their domestic than by their public virtues; upon women who have been Christians faithful to the end, and patriots firm in their loyalty to their country, as well as upon women illustrious as wives, mothers, daughters, or sisters. The sphere in which woman influences us for good is much wider than society sometimes supposes; and the pages of history record innumerable examples of her heroic devotion and constancy to a great purpose. It is well that these examples should be kept before the eyes of the younger female members of our families; and that they should be encouraged to aspire to a high standard of duty, while not forgetting that their true happiness will always lie within the home circle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Leaders Among Women Phillips brooks said in an address before the Phillips Exeter Academy in 1893, Since the noblest life on earth is always human life, the literature which deals with human life must always be the noblest liter ature. And since the individual human life must always have a distinctness and interest which cannot belong to any of the groups of human lives, biography must always have a charm which no other kind of history can rival. I believe fully that the intrinsic life of any human being is so interesting, that if it can be simply and sympathetically put in words, it will be legitimately interesting to other men. I trust that the lives here sketched may be found interesting.
