Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives and Legends of the Evangelists, Apostles, and Other Early Saints Full of interest, too, is the way in which certain legends have been restored to their rightful owners, after having been filched from them and given to other Saints by devotees more eager to glorify the memory of their own favourite patrons than to adhere strictly to the truth. As one instance amongst many may be quoted the quaint story of the resuscitation of a man who had been hanged, in which a cock and hen play a curious part, generally related in connection with St. James the Elder, but really originally told of St. Dominick de la Calzada, who lived many centuries later than the Apostle, and made, or mended, the road used by pilgrims to the shrine of St. James of Compostella, a fact which may perhaps account for the confusion which has sometimes arisen between him and the patron Saint of Spain. Amongst the Saints noticed in the present volume will be found some few whose names are scarcely known in England, yet whose claims to recognition are undoubted on account not only of their sanctity, but because they have all their distinc tive emblems, and are occasionally introduced in Church decora tion and other works of sacred art. Book excerpt: What really happened after Acts? If you’ve ever wondered what happened to the biblical characters after Acts—from the well-known Matthew to the lesser-known Bartholomew—then this book is for you. Join Dr. Bryan Litfin as he guides you through Scripture and other ancient literature to sift fact from fiction, real-life from legend. Skillfully researched and clearly written, After Acts is as accurate as it is engaging. Gain a window into the religious milieu of the ancient and medieval church. Unearth artifacts and burial sites. Learn what really happened to your favorite characters and what you should truly remember them for. Did Paul ever make it to Spain? Was he beheaded in Rome? Is it true that Peter was crucified upside down? Was the Virgin Mary really bodily assumed into heaven? The book of Acts ends at chapter 28. But its characters lived on.

Book excerpt: This study describes the lives of the twelve disciples called by Jesus Christ for training, repentance, and transformation into effective and spirit-filled apostles. They were charged with establishing the Church of Jesus Christ in the hostile world of Jewish, Greek, Roman, and many other groups of intense unbelievers. They were laymen, untrained in deep Jewish doctrine but practiced as businessmen and filled with zeal for the Jewish Messiah to return. They wanted to be a part of his new kingdom and expected major roles in ruling Israel. They became the first of many converts to see that the Jews had missed the heart of Gods message and the new message was that they would die to their own minds, wills, and emotional structures and replace it with the will of their Father through the Holy Spirit. Jesus taught them for more than ten thousand hours of practical ministry, teaching, and supernatural endowment during their time together. This is considerably more hours than it takes to achieve a doctorate in theology today. In this time, they were still incapable of standing up to the Jewish authorities, until endued with power from on high at Pentecost. These secrets, which the apostles found in their ministries, will help the disciple who is serious about transforming his or her life and knowledge of the Gospel into effective ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apostle Paul--antifeminist conformist, or social radical? Combining New Testament studies with folkloristic methods to search for the true identity of Paul, the author sheds new light on the apocryphal Acts of Paul and the Pastoral Epistles of the canonical New Testament. With this book, the legends surrounding the apostle have been rescued from near oblivion and properly placed in the Pauline tradition. Formulated in the days of early Christianity and handed down through the centuries, they cast new light on Paul's views about the ordination of women, the forms of Christian community, and the meaning of the gospel for politics, society, and sexuality.
