Download or read book Life on the Outside written by Jennifer Gonnerman and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking work of reportage on the hidden consequences of America's prison boom Life On the Outside tells the story of Elaine Bartlett, who spent sixteen years in Bedford Hills prison for selling cocaine-a first offense under New York's harsh Rockefeller drug laws. The book opens on the morning of January 26, 2000, when she is set free, having received clemency from the governor. At forty-two, Elaine has virtually nothing: no money, no job, no real home. What she does have is a large and troubled family, including four children, who live in a decrepit Lower East Side housing project. "I left one prison to come home to another," Elaine says. Over the next months, she clashes with her daughters, hunts for a job, visits her son and her husband in prison, negotiates the rules of parole, searches for her own home-and campaigns for the repeal of the sentencing guidelines that led to her long prison term. In recent years, the United States has imprisoned more than two million people while making few preparations for their eventual release. Now these prisoners are coming home in record numbers, as unprepared for "life on the outside" as society is for them. Writing with a passion and an empathy that recall There Are No Children Here and Cold New World, Jennifer Gonnerman calls attention to this mounting national crisis by crafting an intimate family portrait-a story of struggle and survival, guilt and forgiveness, loneliness and love. Life on the Outside is a 2004 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction.

Download or read book A Taste of Power written by Elaine Brown and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Profound, funny ... wild and moving ... heartbreaking accounts of a lonely black childhood.... Brown sees racial oppression in national and global context; every political word she writes pounds home a lesson about commerce, money, racism, communism, you name it ... A glowing achievement.” —Los Angeles Times Elaine Brown assumed her role as the first and only female leader of the Black Panther Party with these words: “I have all the guns and all the money. I can withstand challenge from without and from within. Am I right, Comrade?” It was August 1974. From a small Oakland-based cell, the Panthers had grown to become a revolutionary national organization, mobilizing black communities and white supporters across the country—but relentlessly targeted by the police and the FBI, and increasingly riven by violence and strife within. How Brown came to a position of power over this paramilitary, male-dominated organization, and what she did with that power, is a riveting, unsparing account of self-discovery. Brown’s story begins with growing up in an impoverished neighborhood in Philadelphia and attending a predominantly white school, where she first sensed what it meant to be black, female, and poor in America. She describes her political awakening during the bohemian years of her adolescence, and her time as a foot soldier for the Panthers, who seemed to hold the promise of redemption. And she tells of her ascent into the upper echelons of Panther leadership: her tumultuous relationship with the charismatic Huey Newton, who would become her lover and her nemesis; her experience with the male power rituals that would sow the seeds of the party's demise; and the scars that she both suffered and inflicted in that era’s paradigm-shifting clashes of sex and power. Stunning, lyrical, and acute, this is the indelible testimony of a black woman’s battle to define herself.
Download or read book Thankful written by Elaine Vickers and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stunning, diorama illustrations bring to life this “wonderfully evocative” (BookPage) lullaby of a picture book about celebrating everyday things that make life wonderful. I am thankful for a home where I am safe and warm. Thankful for parents who read me stories and comb my hair gently, gently. Who whisper the same poem every night when they tuck me in. When the first snow falls, a little girl writes down the things she’s thankful for on strips of paper and links them together. As one idea leads to another, her chain grows longer. There’s so much good in her life: a friend, things that are warm, things that are cold, color, things that can be fixed. This beautiful story is a much-needed reminder to observe and honor life’s small joys.
Book Synopsis The Watering Hole by : Vivian Phelps Ray
Download or read book The Watering Hole written by Vivian Phelps Ray and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-07-08 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about ten teenagers who spent lots of time together, enjoying the summer sun, swimming and exploring. It was one of those beautiful but strange days that no one understands. Maybe it was strange because of the weather. It was 106 degrees in the shade and the old people were saying that this heat was caused by dog days, and that they were just lasting too long, that the world was coming to an end, and that Jesus was coming back to judge everyone. The kids found a lovely watering hole on this day, and because it was so hot, they decided to go for a swim. This was such a beautiful and calm area, and since no one else was therethey claimed it, and called it their spot and they went there often. One day while swimming, one of the girls spotted something shining in the water that appeared to be the sun reflecting on a rock. After taking a closer look, she started to scream and everyone asked what was wrong. She said There is a body in the water. It was a dead lady. She was so beautiful, she had olive colored skin, she was wearing a white sequin dress with matching shoes and purse, and her hair was cut short with bangs. Her purse was opened, which revealed a compact engraved with Mary C. King and an address. There was also a small bottle of perfume inside. The police was called, and before the kids could turn around, the police and the coroner magically appeared. That day, these kids were plunged into a bizarre situation that demanded answers.
