As an essential element of life water has been and remains a constant source of conflict and controversy as different constituencies fight for limited resources. The Encyclopedia of Water Politics and Policy in the United States is the most comprehensive reference source available that analyzes water-related issues in America. A diverse group of over 100 scholars have provided their research and analysis of why water is so significant by tracing its impact on issues like national and state boundaries, western migration, urbanization, and the economy. This volume chronicles the origins of present-day water problems, political conflicts, the impact of legislation and court decisions on the use of water resources, the major projects undertaken across the country, and what experts are proposing be done to preserve this basic component of the environment. Going back some 150 years, the Encyclopedia provides an overview of approximately 280 pieces of water-related legislation, legal cases, people, projects, and organizations that have shaped the history of the United States. In addition to historical coverage, the volume also addresses many current environmental issues including acid rain, agriculture, climate change, mining, erosion, levees and dams, pollution, urbanization, and wastewater treatment. The volume’s A to Z entries are divided into four sections: Regional Water Politics and Policy: Essays providing a narrative background and overview Major Issues in Water Politics and Policy: A comprehensive list of issues from colonial times to the present Law and Government: The people and legislation that have shaped water policy in the United States Places and Projects: Extensive coverage of the projects (including dams and aqueducts) the government has undertaken to develop the nation’s waterways Throughout the volume, concise text features highlight important events, advocacy groups, people, books, and sites important to water politics and policy. A thematic table of contents allows users to easily locate reclamation projects geographically, biographies of important figures, current issues by subject area, government agencies, and legal cases.

Exploring events in Nebraska - and far beyond -that included ghosts, UFOs, Bigfoot encounters, animal mutilations, government cover-ups, alleged alien abductions, psychic phenomena, cult activity, and even a sighting of a blob-like mystery creature the Fortean Research Center became recognized among members of the Fortean, paranormal, and UFO research communities around the world, as a reliable and trusted source of information. Here is the entire collection of the Journal of the Fortean Research Center, 23 issues in all. These publications are a reflection of their time, and demonstrate in many cases the beginning steps into subjects familiar to the public today: alleged UFO crashes and landings at government installations, alien abductions, cryptozoology and more.
Book Synopsis Researching Subcultures, Myth and Memory by : Bart van der Steen
Download or read book Researching Subcultures, Myth and Memory written by Bart van der Steen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together contributions that analyse how subcultural myths develop and how they can be studied. Through critical engagement with (history) writing and other sources on subcultures by contemporaries, veterans, popular media and researchers, it aims to establish: how stories and histories of subcultures emerge and become canonized through the process of mythification; which developments and actors are crucial in this process; and finally how researchers like historians, sociologists, and anthropologists should deal with these myths and myth-making processes. By considering these issues and questions in relation to mythmaking, this book provides new insights on how to research the identity, history, and cultural memory of youth subcultures.

Book Synopsis The Assassination Complex by : Jeremy Scahill
Download or read book The Assassination Complex written by Jeremy Scahill and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A searing, facts-driven indictment of America’s drone wars and their implications for US democracy and foreign policy. A must-read for concerned citizens” (Library Journal, starred review) from bestselling author Jeremy Scahill and his colleagues at the investigative website The Intercept. Drones are a tool, not a policy. The policy is assassination. But drone strikes often kill people other than the intended target. These deaths, which have included women and children, dwarf the number of actual combatants who have been assassinated by drones. They have generated anger toward the United States among foreign populations and have even become a recruiting tool for jihadists. The first drone strike outside a declared war zone was conducted more than twelve years ago, but it was not until May 2013 that the White House released a set of standards and procedures for conducting such strikes. However, there was no explanation of the internal process used to determine whether a suspect should be killed without being indicted or tried, even if that suspect is an American citizen. The implicit message of the Obama administration has been: Trust, but don’t verify. The Assassination Complex reveals stunning details of the government’s secretive drone warfare program based on documents supplied by a confidential source in the intelligence community. These documents make it possible to begin the long-overdue debate about the policy of drone warfare and how it is conducted. The Assassination Complex allows us to understand at last the circumstances under which the US government grants itself the right to sentence individuals to death without the established checks and balances of arrest, trial, and appeal—“readers will be left in no doubt that drone warfare affronts morality and the Constitution” (Kirkus Reviews).

This book was released on 2018-09 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant New Use - Rules on Certain Chemical Substances (US Environmental Protection Agency Regulation) (EPA) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Significant New Use - Rules on Certain Chemical Substances (US Environmental Protection Agency Regulation) (EPA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 EPA is promulgating significant new use rules (SNURs) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) for 57 chemical substances which were the subject of premanufacture notices (PMNs). The applicable review periods for the PMNs submitted for these 57 chemical substances all ended prior to June 22, 2016 (i.e., the date on which President Obama signed into law the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act which amends TSCA). Thirty-four of these chemical substances are subject to TSCA section 5(e) consent orders issued by EPA. This action requires persons who intend to manufacture (defined by statute to include import) or process any of these 57 chemical substances for an activity that is designated as a significant new use by this rule to notify EPA at least 90 days before commencing that activity. The required notification initiates EPA's evaluation of the intended use within the applicable review period. Manufacture and processing for the significant new use is unable to commence until EPA has conducted a review of the notice, made an appropriate determination on the notice, and take such actions as are required with that determination. This book contains: - The complete text of the Significant New Use - Rules on Certain Chemical Substances (US Environmental Protection Agency Regulation) (EPA) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section
Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Book Synopsis Nixon's Darkest Secrets by : Don Fulsom
Download or read book Nixon's Darkest Secrets written by Don Fulsom and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A veteran White House reporter reveals our 37th president was even more sinister and haunted than we knew. Richard Nixon left the White House in 1974 as our most disgraced president, but the American people never knew the full extent of his demons, deceptions, paranoia, prejudices, hatreds, and chicanery. Calling on his work in covering Nixon, scores of interviews with members of Congress, White House staffers, and others close to our nation's thirty-seventh president, and invaluable, newly declassified documents and recordings, veteran journalist Don Fulsom sheds new light on "Tricky Dick." The author's revelations include: - That the future president sabotaged the 1968 peace talks for political gain - By the time Nixon became president in 1969, he had linked to the mob for more than two decades and, as president, had a close connection with New Orleans boss Carlos Marcello, the most powerful Mafioso in the nation - The president had a drinking problem and top aides referred to him as "Our Drunk" - Nixon had a misogynist streak and was abusive toward first lady Pat Nixon - The intimate and possibly homosexual nature of Nixon's relationship with confidante Charles "Bebe" Rebozo, a banker with mob ties - Testimony alleging that the president had ordered the killing of White House reporter Jack Anderson Fulsom's examination of these and other startling aspects of Nixon's personal and political dimensions paint an unflinching portrait of a leader who was once the most powerful man in the world. Nixon's Darkest Secrets provides a chilling final chapter in literature on our most troubled president.
Book Synopsis The Mystery of Utsuro-Bune by : Shoichi Kamon
Download or read book The Mystery of Utsuro-Bune written by Shoichi Kamon and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-10 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Japan, it is well-known that there are mysterious documents that may be related to modern UFO phenomena. It is certain that they were written about two hundred years ago, long before 1947 (when the first UFO sighting was recorded). These documents state the details of an incident that occurred on a Japanese beach in 1803 and the description provided resembles modern UFO close encounters of the third kind. In most of the documents, a disk-shaped ship called Utsuro-bune (UFO?), a strange woman speaking an unknown language (alien?) and strange characters (alien hieroglyphs?) are depicted. At present, a total of twelve documents detailing the same incident have been found which is an indicator of the validity of the incident, given the high number. If the UFO-like craft described in the documents based on actual observations of UFOs in Japan two hundred years ago is verified, the documents can be considered as strong evidence of the existence of UFOs.From the viewpoint of folklore, the incident has been considered as part of the legends of Utsuro-bune (hollow ship in English) for a long time; these legends have been passed down in Japan, and Utsuro-bune is a ship based on the human imagination. However, following the arrival of UFO fever from the USA in 1947, a mystery emerged around how the disk-shaped ship depicted in the documents resembles a UFO to such an extent. Can it be considered the long-waited hard evidence of the existence of UFOs? This intriguing story has been known as the Utsuro-bune UFO legend in Japan. The purpose of this book is to document an exhaustive study of this Utsuro-bune UFO legend from scientific, historical, and folkloric viewpoints. How did the Japanese author of the documents in the Edo Period, which was two hundred years ago, imagine UFO-like shapes when the visual characteristics of a modern UFO could not possibly have been known at that time? Were the pictures of the Utsuro-bune UFO drawn based on an actual UFO sighting dating back to the Edo Period? This book will be the first, the only, and the most complete documentation of this mystery; it is available in English and employs principles of both science and reason. The reader will be fascinated by the bizarre circumstances of this mystery which can be summarized by the following question: "Why are ships similar to UFOs depicted in the ancient literature of the Edo Period, which took place two hundred years ago, in Japan?
