Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Belcher family fulfills a lifelong dream of moving from the big city to a beautiful little farm, they don’t know much about farming. Melody, the youngest daughter, longs for a horse, and Crystal, her sister, wants sheep. But Rosemary, their mother, has a different wish...she’s always dreamed of having a llama! As time goes on, all the family members get their wishes granted, along with many, many more as the real tails of Easy Yoke Farm begin to arrive: fluffy and soft, short or wooly, long and swishy, and of course feathered. Before long, sheep, goats, geese, turkeys, dogs, cows, horses and even a herd of llamas roam the pastures. From bottle-feeding baby goats, to singing “Old MacDonald” to soothe a cow in labour, to receiving life-lessons from a wise and generous guardian llama, Rosemary and her family undergo a dizzying learning curve in their wild and wonderful adventures on the farm. This sweetly entertaining introduction to farm life incorporates subtle lessons in both science and spirituality that enhance and contextualize these gentle stories. Those who must be read to, those who want to read for themselves, and those who want to read to others will all be enchanted by The Real Tails of Easy Yoke Farm.

Book excerpt: This illustrated edition of Padraic Colum's children's story, “The Boy who Knew what the Birds Said”, was originally published in 1925. Padraic Colum (1881 – 1972) was an Irish novelist, poet, biographer, dramatist, playwright, children's author, and folklorist. He is hailed as being one of the most important writers of the Irish Literary Revival. This charming and timeless tale is sure to entertain modern children as it did when first published and is not to be missed by collectors of classic children's literature. These tales are accompanied by the beautiful and intricate illustrations of Dugald Stewart Walker. Walker was one of the most highly-celebrated illustrators of children's books during the early twentieth century and are best remembered for the lavish, magical realm that they frequently described. He is perhaps best known for his contributions to “Fairy Tales from Hans Christian Andersen” (1914), but also illustrated books such as “Rainbow Gold - Poems Old and New” and “Dream Boats and Other Stories”. Contents include: “How he came to Know what the Birds Said”, “The Stone of Victory”, “And How Feet-in-the-Ashes, the Swineherd's Son, Came to Find it”, “The King of the Birds”, “Bloom-of-Youth and the Witch of the Elders”, “The Hen-Wife's Son and the Princess Brightbrow”, “The Giant and the Birds”, and more. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Book excerpt: In about the middle of the 1800’s a man called Henry the Flyer, because he walked so fast, went for a little walk through the village of Bolsward located in Friesland located in the Netherlands. He was a cattle buyer and partners with the local butcher. Henry carried a cane as he walked and he used it to measure the cattle to determine their weight and value. As he walked through the village he met two young men who looked to him as if they might be up to no good, He said “Good evening” to them and they didn’t even respond, so Henry pointed his cane at them and said “ It is rude to say nothing when spoken to by a senior”. One of the guys grabbed the cane. Just what he shouldn’t have done! Now Henry was holding a nice shiny sword and the guy was holding a nice harmless scabbard until he dropped it and took off with his buddy like a scared rabbit. They likely had to try to figure out how to tell mom how they had messed their pants.

Book excerpt: Welcome to Canada-home of the big bucks. Whitetail monarchs freely roam through the hardwood forests and crop fields in the checkered agricultural belt of this vast land. Heredity endows our deer with large bodies and matching massive antlers, but environment dictates behavior. Canadian whitetails are different and behave differently from their southern brethren. No matter where you have hunted before, deer hunting in Canada is a brand new game. Your old, tried-and-true ways will not work here. New tactics and strategies are required. Veteran hunter, Dragan Vujic, shares close to forty years of hunting experience in this comprehensive book on Canadian Whitetail Hunting. The book itself is divided into three parts-The Facts About Canadian Whitetails (general information, game laws, social structure, habitat, communication, breeding behavior, anatomy, kill zones), Critical Factors That Determine Canadian Whitetail Behavior (weather, phases of the moon, hunting pressure, time of year, scents, doe to buck ratios, time of day, food sources), Effective Canadian Whitetail Hunting Strategies (archers, snipers, stalkers, callers, drivers, blockers). Within these sections, Dragan Vujic covers all of the key components for hunting whitetails in Canada. Additional chapters include tactics for all situations, the recently new phenomenon of hunting deer in the suburbs and tracking wounded whitetails. [email protected]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deer Companions includes several years of observations and experiences at a deer farm. The reader will be introduced to a herd of several dozen white-tailed deer, become closely acquainted with several (and their human caretakers), and even see a little of what used to be called natural history. The nearest likeness to the author’s experience is the proverbial traveler to a distant land who becomes adopted into an exotic tribe. We will see the herd’s social structure, as it were, from the inside, and acquire a jealous, but very devoted, sweetheart. (That’s her on the cover.) The author has seen this happen to several other people but, after extensive research, can find no published mention of it. The picture doesn’t do it justice; no one else can see the look in Sugar’s eyes when she does that. There is also an extensive appendix describing habitat and herd manipulations in all fifty states of the Union to “enhance sporting opportunities”—multiply deer populations for hunters’ benefit. This puts away any claim that hunting is about population control.

Book excerpt: If you fly an hour or so from Vancouver to Bella Coola, South Bentinck Arm isn’t that much farther away. But this inlet on British Columbia’s Central Coast is an otherworldly place where encounters with bowhead whales, pesky porcupines and devil’s fish provide adventure and education for two brothers from Vancouver. South Bentinck Summer is the story of Tommy, age 10, and his know-it-all brother Chet, age 14, who stay at their dad’s logging camp for two glorious months. The boys roam the forests and waterways, discovering the wonder of the plants and animals around them while spying on beavers, catching salmon, battling a giant Pacific octopus, and rescuing a fawn. Through their immersion in the natural world, the brothers also strengthen their own bond as they celebrate triumphs and overcome challenges together. They’re often joined by their friend Talyu Joe, a Nuxalk youth who further expands their perspectives and deepens their empathy for animals and each other with his knowledge and cultural connection to the land. South Bentinck Summer is a vividly written book of tales that also reveal the Indigenous world and its history on this part of the coast through the eyes of Talyu Joe. With animals coming to life in chapters such as “Old Barnacle Back” and “A Lovable Old Bandit,” these captivating stories are sure to ignite the imagination of children and youth.
