Book excerpt: Little Bits of Joy& wisdom from a very good dog is a book for anyone who has ever loved a dog with all their heart, and especially for those who have had the privilege of being the beloved companion to a dog who has the ability to teach them to truly appreciate the innate wonder of life. Brinkley was such a dog. From the moment he joined our family he began to instruct us, beginning with a valuable lesson on starting over and learning to love again after the devastating loss of our previous dog. Over the years he would also lend his wisdom to me as I suffered the loss of the job I was planning to retire from and where all of my closest friends still worked, navigated various health challenges with aging family members, and just generally helped me learn to roll with the changes that had become the new norm for my once very stable life. I have always felt that our dogs model some of Gods finest characteristics, such as selflessness and humility, better than many humans, and Brinkley certainly taught me a lot about these traits. And yet, he also had a wonderful sense of humor and the ability to lighten our moods, even in the tough times. Finally, he was even able to teach me how to say goodbye with grace, and to embrace the circle of life as he departed to make his journey to Rainbow Bridge and a new puppy joined us to complete our little family once again. Little Bits of Joy is a glimpse into just how rewarding life can be when it is shared with a cherished companion, one who ultimately helps us realize our best selves through our selfless love for others.

Book excerpt: A young man returns to London from a monastery to become a godfather—and gets a second chance at love—in this “blithe, original, engaging satire” (The New York Times). Robin has not gone outside for five years. When he first arrived at the remote island monastery, he had attacks so violent that the brothers thought he might do himself harm, so his room was stripped of all but the bed. Robin seemed to like it that way. But now, after years of penance for some unspoken sin, he is pale, drawn, and emotionally fragile—nothing like the promising university student he once was. Indeed, he is a ticking time bomb of unexpressed anger, and he is about to be unleashed upon the world. Robin came to the monastery after his childhood playmate, Candida, became engaged to Jake, their irresistibly sexy mutual friend. Now, Candida is a mother, and she wants her long-lost friend to be the child’s godfather. When he returns to London after his long exile, Robin finds the modern world strange and unfamiliar, but he must fight through it if he is to conclude the unfinished business that caused him to flee, and take his place in the world once again. Written at the height of the AIDS crisis, Little Bits of Baby is an intensely personal and romantic book from an author who writes with an intimate understanding of the labyrinth of the human heart. Winsomely funny and bittersweet, it may be the most remarkable novel Patrick Gale has ever produced.

Book excerpt: The best of contemporary Argentine author Cecilia Pavón's short stories. Poet, writer and translator Cecilia Pavón emerged in the late 1990s as one of the most prolific and central figures of the young Argentine literary scene--the so-called "Generation of the 90s": artists and writers whose aesthetics and politics were an earnest response to the disastrous impact of American-exported neoliberal policies and the resulting economic crisis of 2001. Their publications were fragile--xeroxed, painted on cardboard--but their cultural impact, indelible. A cofounder of Buenos Aires's independent art space and publishing press Belleza y Felicidad--where a whole generation of soon-to-be-famous Argentine artists showed for the first time--Pavón pioneered the use of "unpoetic" and intimate content, her verses often lifted from text messages or chatrooms, her tone often impish, yet brutally sincere. Fellow Argentine poet Marina Yuszczuk once wrote, "Pavón's writing is filled with minor illuminations and conjectures; her syntax is the syntax of commas, 'buts,' and disjunctives, thoughts and impressions organized into a current that flows, branches off, and stands still." In 2015, Pavón's first volume of collected poems, A Hotel With My Name, was published in English. Contemporary writers in the US, Australasia and Europe discovered a deep affinity with her work. Pavón's protagonists, Ariana Reines noted, "are absolute women, guileless dreamers, saints in sneakers, on sidewalks, in jail, in Zara, on buses, in nightclubs, in bed." Translated by Pavón's own poetic protégé Jacob Steinberg, Little Joy collects the best of Pavón's short stories written between 1999-2020, originally published in three volumes in Spanish.

Book excerpt: Matthew Cordell, Caldecott Medal-winning author and illustrator of Wolf in the Snow, delivers yet another warm and delightful picture book in King Alice. Alice and her family are stuck indoors on a snowy day. Alice loves to read, and when her dad suggests that she make her own book, she snaps out of her "I'm bored" mode and makes up a story that lasts till the lights go out later that night. Here is a book that celebrates books, reading, and an imaginative way that one family handles being housebound. Praise for Matthew Cordell “Beautifully paced . . . ultimately reassuring.” —Wall Street Journal on Wolf in the Snow “Shows the power of kindness and bravery. Reminiscent of William Steig's Brave Irene, Cordell's book is a perfect choice for the dark days of winter.” —IndieBound on Wolf in the Snow

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A BuzzFeed "Best Book of June 2021" From sixteen-year-old Dara McAnulty, a globally renowned figure in the youth climate activist movement, comes a memoir about loving the natural world and fighting to save it. Diary of a Young Naturalist chronicles the turning of a year in Dara’s Northern Ireland home patch. Beginning in spring?when “the sparrows dig the moss from the guttering and the air is as puffed out as the robin’s chest?these diary entries about his connection to wildlife and the way he sees the world are vivid, evocative, and moving. As well as Dara’s intense connection to the natural world, Diary of a Young Naturalist captures his perspective as a teenager juggling exams, friendships, and a life of campaigning. We see his close-knit family, the disruptions of moving and changing schools, and the complexities of living with autism. “In writing this book,” writes Dara, “I have experienced challenges but also felt incredible joy, wonder, curiosity and excitement. In sharing this journey my hope is that people of all generations will not only understand autism a little more but also appreciate a child’s eye view on our delicate and changing biosphere.” Winner of the Wainwright Prize for UK nature writing and already sold into more than a dozen territories, Diary of a Young Naturalist is a triumphant debut from an important new voice.

The Joy Journal for Magical Everyday Play by Laura Brand showcases fifty engaging activities for creative, everyday playtime to encourage a connection to nature, sense of joy and bonding with your kids, while nurturing your own inner child too. The activities are mindful, creative and, crucially, very easy things to make and do with children that you will enjoy as much as they will. From moon sand to flower soup and nature wands there are short, long, loud and quiet activities to take you from morning to evening – each with a focus on the risk factors: volume of effort vs child engagement and mess. Laura Brand has been testing these while writing and raising her two-under-two, and shares the happy accidents and road blocks she’s hit along the way in honest, open and often funny introductions to each of the exercises. This beautiful handbook will help you to inject fun, mindfulness and craft into bath-times, rainy afternoons, long journeys and play dates and to resist (as much as possible!) the temptation to succumb to screen time. Chapters take you through the seasons, with indoor, outdoor and on-the-go activities that are easy and fun every day. The Joy Journal will arm you with a variety of fun, focussed activities made with store cupboard and easily foraged supplies that you can turn to time and again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes the world knocks us flat on our butt. We feel stretched further than we ever thought physically, emotionally, or spiritually possible. And though we are torn up inside, we feel like we need to keep our chin up and put a good face on things. So we pretend that everything is fine, even though it's not. Even in the hardest times, strength from God rises from deep in our soul to keep us going. In this honest, inspirational, and humorous book, Katie Schnack goes deep into the hard stuff of life with no sugar coating or toxic positivity to find sustenance she could not imagine. Faced with a child's medical challenges in the midst of a global pandemic, having strength to get up in the morning and actually enjoy the day was so unlikely that she knew it had to come from God. Schnack's plucky authenticity shows us how when life is complicated, self-compassion and humor can bring healing and life. Everything Is (Not) Fine looks at the hard realities of life, but also gently reminds us of the good. Even in dark times, we can get glimpses of light.
